Small lurcher or whippet to help terrier out?
NEWKID replied to Jordb543's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
if i was to go down the whippet route would you reccomend a ped or non-ped? or is there not alot of difference i assum non ped means greyhound in there somewhere? Tbh rocky i would like to get permission on all different types of land but havnt really bothered as i dont have a dog that will be able to use it, so really a lurcher that i could take on those kinds of places if i wanted to would be nice, not saying it has to catch huge bags maybe just one or two would be fine by me, would be a change of scenery etc and keeps the dogs busy, if im asking too much of a dog to be able to -

i had a first x beddyxwhippet and i now have a whippet both great dogs tackle anything but very keen on working cover so they wont stand out waiting for a bolt they want to be in the thick of it, get the beddy x better coat for when its cold and dont show scars. Brothers got a first x whip/bed start her next season should have a bit of fun with our little pack -

This is my 3/4 whip 1/4 beddy and the jack russel in the backgrounds mine. the lurchers only 8 mnths but I got her for the same things as you want ( although i will lamp with her too). I went for 3/4 bred because I hoped it would be quicker than the 1/2 cross and already having a terrier wanted more sight hound blood. She's came on well works well with the terrier when bushing and well with the ferrets. obviously she's really young so I couldn't tell you she is doing this or that yet but so far I'm really pleased. -
Nice one Steve, another top day

Definately early starts for me, get all the time in you can, the days are short and the seasons are getting shorter, besides I reckon the mornings the best time of the day

I take 2 jrt and lurcher but strollers right the terrier is especially jealous and far too hard mouthed, but she marks well, catches hole hoppers and pushes most out of the hedge into the long nets so she's useful as long as you get the rabbit off her quick plus my missus couldn't handle the whining if i left one home, as soon as the coat and boots are on they know

How about air rifle and night vision mate ( best way for lamp shy bunnies), you must dig your ferrets out constantly in the summer when the warrens are full of young. I know you gotta keep land owners happy to keep permision but that must be hard work. Have you ferreted the permission constantly for a couple of years? If so how do find the population of rabbits after a couple of years? Thats not a dig mate just interested if they re-colonise quickly if your constantly taking them as we rest our permission out of season to be honest mate this is the first year and i know we wont be

NEWKID replied to kevin from bristol's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Any spare time this winter been out with the dogs( bringing a pup on) or ferrets a little gutted though as I've heard this has been the best cod run for many many years all around the coast. a mates been having some off lilstock the tamars produced along with most places. Talking to another mate who dropped a couple of nets over christmas off of budleigh beach ( this is not a known venue for cod) he said he was'nt far out of casting range he had 60 cod 4lb- 8lb boxing day night and same sort of size couple of nights later, he also told me one of the charter boats out of Exmouth had 40 cod not -
Another great day mate with the bunnies. I used to do a load of match fishing years ago and worked in our tackle shop ( exeter angling centre) till i was about 18. I'm still good mates with Geoff Salisbury and Kev his son who are the owners , I don't know if you've approached them to supply your baits but it's a massive shop might be worth a call. PM me any details and I'd happily have a word for you or forward their details to you.

That sounds like winning the ferreters lottery to me mate....... You can't beat the quickset longnets and at £40 ( do you fancy selling it for £45)

Definately seem to be holding in pockets this year, lamped some permission thats normally pickled early in the season didn't see one, farmer said there had been a load of mixy there, 20 minutes down the road we've had some nice bags ferreting this year. Went to a bit, lamping tues night ( ideal to get the pup going small fields loads of rabbits) not many about at all, there were loads there last year so had been waiting for the right night to get up there with the pup. I reckon there's a lot of factors but alot of mixy about last summer and the last couple of harsh winters can't of helped fr

we wont be out in march let alone april, last fri ferreting 4 out of 11 rabs pregnant, tues night on lamp 2 out of for 4, 1 rabbit looked ready to drop. I don't think we've got long left with the ferrets here.

sounds like she's done well in her first season -
It's good to have permission as long as the land owner don't expect a clearance job. Went on some with a mate ( his permission) a couple of weeks ago with the dogs and the farmer came out for a walk to see the dogs run he was impressed with my mates dog ( my pup was just watching) but wanted a corn field sorted out properly.. My mate went back with the ferrets on the weekend and air rifle in the week to sort it. It's a bit of effort to keep them happy sometimes but I suppose you can have a night out without worrying about a pull sometimes

Had 4 lamping tonight 2 pregnant 1 was almost ready to drop Really think down this way we aint got long left with the ferts

Just got in, pup had a couple of runs but where we went is usually pickled with rabs but were quite sparse tonight We managed 4 with the other dog and the pup was on best behaviour real good re-call straight back every time It's another night of experiance for her and she's getting closer everytime...

I'm starting back after a few years out of it and do it because i love being out with my dogs, I always did but couldn't find the time for a while. My love for the game was started as a kid catching rabbits, I still love catching rabbits, my little lad will learn how to catch rabbits. Over the years caught more than rabbits, but to get back into it I've got a rabbiting dog, I hope in years to come I don't lose sight of why I got into hunting in the first place
