  1. Been to vet had injections and cam down the throat, couldnt find anything stuck in there but a course of anti biotics and a night in the vet hopefully sort her out. Picking her up tomorrow
  2. Jess my springer started coughing a little but last night, she seemed a little bit tired but she did have 2 massive walks so I put it down to that, wasnt too sure about the slight coughing but I couldnt find anything wrong, well today she has a lump in her throat, not too sure what it is, its on the underside of her jaw, just wondering if anyone has any ideas before I nip her down the vets!
  3. If your throwing something and hes not even running after it then your doing it too much as the dog has lost interest. Dont over do things and make the dog bored mate! My lab and spaniel are mad to chase after things I throw, The lab is steady now and will wait but I have to keep an eye on the spaniel or she will run in lol!
  4. Cheers guys, I did alot of recall work with the whistle and have come on leaps and bounds, can also get her to sit n stay for a few yards not anything to brag about but progress is progress Hunting nice n tight at the moment, I currently have a month off work so have lots of time to work on it Also I am throwing out tennis balls when she is hunting and when she picks them up I whistle her in with the recall so am almost getting the retrieve, shes not too keen to hand them over to me but will return and sit with a bit of encouragement so not too bad Bit more work she will ok alright
  5. depends on what type of work you want it to do and how often you want it to work. Id say the majority of field trailers kennel there dogs. I kennel'd my 2 but my mother keeps bringing them in, it really has ruined them in some aspects of working. Not just from being inside but from what comes with it. People throwing things for them and not getting them to retrieve it, letting them all over the house and furniture, feeding them from the table. Its ridiculous. When they are naughty or cause trouble then I am to blame cos there my dogs. Does my head in!
  6. Id use treats for recall and sit but not for retrieving as now your teaching the dog to drop the dummy when it gets to you. Not what you want trust me!
  7. Thats a lovely looking dog mate Hope you dont mind me asking how much you payed for him ?
  8. When you have her sat rather than getting her to come to you try going to her every so often. This might reassure her that you are not going away and as such make her a bit steadier. Thats what Im doing mate, I still can barely get more than 4-5 feet away and she wants to move
  9. I took her out this mornin and she was hunting lovely. Been working on the recall whistle and stop whistle. The recall is coming on leaps and bounds, she coming in 4/5 times where as before she would 50/50 and she wouldnt come in properly. The sit and stay isnt going well, she is constantly squirming and itching to move, I stopped after a few tries as she tucked her tail between her legs and was getting nervous, She hunted well and with me turning her and calling her back in she stayed in range 90% of the time so I am very pleased
  10. Right I know some land I have permission on has woodcock coming in, what is the best way to hunt them ? Just walk up with a dog? Also what is the best time to go after them as I hear they are most active at night. Going to ask my mate to come out with his springer, mine a bit too young. Also what are the best areas to try ? near water ? or just amongst the bracken ? Thanks for any tips
  11. Yes I have open palm to her and tell her to stay, she tries to creep forwards and I put her back on the exact spot. Shes very timid so I do it calmly and give her a fuss and a stroke when she stays put
  12. Is she socialised with other dogs alot?.... I had a shy spaniel (a dog) and i got him over it by taking him out to meet lots of people in lots of places. Alot of spaniel pee themselves, its just what they do. Good luck with the training i hope it all goes well. I got her at 10 weeks old. Someone else had her but his other dog kept snapping at her so she was very nervous. I have socialised her with dogs I know (mates spaniels and such) and she is much better, She used to run away if another dog came near her. Now she will approach them to say hello but shes still a lil nervous, espe
  13. The reason I havent done alot with her is she was a very timid puppy, she cowered alot and when you went to touch her she would wet herself the poor girl. Thankfully with a bit of love and care she no longer does this but it still quite nervous. This is one of the main reason I havent done anything, also shes still very puppyish so I didnt want to be telling her off for things she wouldnt understand. Shes come along way since I first got her, working on the sit/stay, the recall is 50/50 and I think I over looked these a bit. Will be cracking on with the basics and hopefully see the results
  14. I have done some but to be honest they do need work! I am working on them alot at the moment, to be honest I think you have hit the nail on the head and dont see how I didnt realise it before. She will sit/stay and recall but not reliably and on recall will come back but soon as shes near me turns round n starts going back to what she was doing. I have been doing alot of pulling her into me when calling the stop whistle after being ignored and she seems to be getting better. Also on the stay I get abouyt 4-5 yards away and shes itching to move off the spot! I am working on these befor
  15. You've asked 2 different questions. 1st you asked what the best all round gundog ? Then you asked whats the best beginners gundog ? The Springer spaniel is called the maiden of all work, The best beginners dog is a lab IMO as there MUCH calmer and easier to train. Which one you should get depends on the shooting you want to do. I take my lab wild fowling by me and she will retrieve well, she will also hunt but will not hit cover like a spaniel will, thats why I got my springer, shes too young to work atm but when we go after the rabbits my mate brings his springer who goes through the cover
  16. I got one payed bout £300 for it, its a bit knocked about an tatty but it drops whatever I shoot with it so dont see any point going out and spending alot of money on something better. Never had any trouble with it I bought it off someone up the road and I dont think he bought it new either lol! It does the job! Goes bang when I pull the trigger, its upto me to hit em. If I was payed 3 or 4 grand for a gun id want the bloody thing to hit the birds when I had my eyes closed
  17. Rytex spaniels are probally the top in the trialing world. Depends what you want them for. Havent heard alot from Badger Court mate, although they seem to be alot stockier dogs!
  18. How early are we talking here? As far as i'm aware its been a long time that cockers and springers have been physiologically different. On the topic of sprockers, there is one working in the beating line of our shoot, its the only one i've seen work much and it looks just like a mini black and white springer, and works somewhere between the two, if that makes any sense? As for the difference between springers and cockers i'd say the big one is that cockers take longer to mature and can really be like kids and pretty manic up until two. Yer n the problem with springers is you
  19. Chudleys Working Crunch to the lab and spaniel!
  20. Mines exactly the same mate, shes about 7 or 8 months now and once she gets a whiff shes off well out of range, Shes a very timid dog though so im wary of correcting her and also still very puppyish!
  21. Mate of mine from down the boxing gym is looking to get a dog, he does alot of running like me and wants a dog that he can take out running with him and also that he can use on rabbits. I suggested something like a collie x whippet as I thought it would be full of energy and good on the ol rabbits ? What do you guys think ? Also whats the best place to find a dog to suit ? cheers guys
  22. Lovely dogs mate like your kennel setup! Looks top!
  23. 26inches mate, suit me nicely im only 5ft 7in lol I had one like that before mate wish Id never sold it now was a good lil rough gun Looks like some nice rough shooting up by you aswell mate, Enjoy
  24. Alright mate you find any wild fowling clubs in the area ? I got my first teal the other night, The Lab was carrying it round the garden, put it down and the spaniel I had off you picked it up on the chest perfectly and ran around with it before bringing it back to me lol
