  1. Sound to melike your running him on alot of tough game at a very early age mate. Let him mature for a few months first, gain alot of confidence metally.
  2. What are you a puppy farmer ? How do you have 3 litters due at the same time ?
  3. My lab is the same, I reckon from being spoilt, with me she has to listen but my family take her out and dont reinforce the commands so she takes the P*ss. Then she tries it on with me to see if she can get away with it. Is your dog kennel'd or a house dog ? When I had her in the kennel she was much sharper on commands and listened alot better. Bloody family keep bringing her in the house though Without a doubt they try it on sometimes, I know she knows the commands as she does them flawlessly for me at times. Then other times she just ignores em totally
  4. Thanks I have ordered, "The Working Whippet" and "Understanding the Working Lurcher" Look forward to reading them
  5. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Working-Whippet-Helen-Hansell/dp/1846890675/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1297597803&sr=8-9 what you think of this one ? Looks ok ?
  6. Right guys never had a lurcher or a whippet but I do like em and just interested in having a lil read. Would love to get one in the future but wont be getting one for a few years to come atleast. Anyways can anyone recommend some nice books to look into them ? Would also like to have whippets in it if possible ? Appreciate any tips
  7. Everyone has said it mate, your doing too much too soon, as for the release just squeeze his gums and he will let go. Id be letting him run in and go nuts in honesty at that age thought, hes only a baby let him see the joys of working, otherwise he wont want to do it.
  8. Possibly put her on a puppy feed as it has a highter protein content. Beta Puppy is what the breeder who bred my lab used.
  9. 1. track what ? 2. why ? does you or your husband doin any deer stalking or such ?
  10. I know a Springer that is well bred Badger Court lines, in the hands of his owner he is bonkers and everyone in the local complains he is wild and theres something wrong with him. When I hold him he sits quietly and behaves lovely and I would love to have him as I think he would be a pleasure to train. The dog has what it takes it just needs to be shown the right path, now if the sire has the skills and abilities to be a good worker but just lacks the right training then Id take a pup of it.
  11. Some cracking kennels lads, especially like yours Shazza, hope to have something like that when I get my own place
  12. I wouldnt mind seeing a few kennel setups an all id post mine but they dont get used as my bloody mother just brings em in the house.
  13. Cheers lads some great offers Will definately hope to come along with you guys. I head to or around all those places for my work anyways so used to travelling to the areas. Look forward to meeting a few people and hopefully enjoying sme good running dogs
  14. Cheers mate appreciate the offer, Never know might come down one day if im not working My springer is coming upto a year old, hopefully get her bushing for a good running dog
  15. Just wondering if theres anyone about in South Wales ? Im near porthcawl if anyone knows it but go all over for my job. I have been into shooting and have a springer and a lab but never been out with running dogs and fancy having a crack and taking part. Anyone mind If I came out with them ? Im 21 year old lad and dont mind getting stuck in. Appreciate any help
  16. Are there much about there then? A few fallow about yes. Considering doing DSC1 so they take off my mentoring condition hmmm. Its about £300 mind lol
  17. Where abouts do you guys stalk ? I have some permission round the back of margam park on some farms with fallow on but never got out as my mentor is always busy Where do you guys head then ?
  18. Aslong as he isnt a nervous wreck and is nice and condident Id take him on mate
  19. Its prob possible but you got much better chances with a gundog for the job. Id get a spaniel if I was the OP
  20. Ive seen a spaniels that are very good with wild fowl. OP are you looking to hunt up rabbits with your dog or just retrieve ones flushed by rabbits ? If just retrieve you would be much better suited to a labrador
  21. Doesnt matter if a retriever is easier to train than a spaniel. if the ground he shoots is for rabbit shooting and full of thick cover then a retriever would not be the best dog for the job he needs it to do. get the dog for the job and you wont go far wrong. If I wanted a dog for personal protection I wouldnt buy a poodle. No doubt they could be trained for it as they are very intelligent. A few labs have been trained upto Shutzhund level 3 and been excellent dogs but Id get the dog best suited to the job.
  22. The dog to get all depends on what type of shooting you want to do. If you want to do rough shooting then a spaniel, if you just need a dog to retrieve then a lab. Also get the breed you like the most and you will enjoy spending time with. No point getting a lab or a spaniel if you only want to be out with a different breed.
  23. Cockers are bred to flush, Teckels to flush and chase, there a hound. If you want a gundog then get a proper cocker mate
  24. it is not a training aid it is an instrument of correction I think the point he was making is if used correctly its not as bad as some people make out. I have seen alot crueler things done to dogs without shock collars, Kicking, Punching, Beating. All terrible. End of the day if someone is going to mistreat there dog they dont need a shock coller to do it. if used correctly I hear they can be quite effective. Although never used one myself.
