Which rifle to apply for - 1st application
matt_hooks replied to fiona22's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Never understood the .32 as a dispatch pistol frankly. It's an unusual calibre, so expensive to use, and doesn't carry the energy of the more usual pistol cals, .38/.357, 9mm etc. -
Hmmm, wonder what an Old Spot cross Berkshire would look like. Reckon the meat would be pretty good anyway!

It's a brave statement to say that a .22LR will kill "anything" I don't think I'd like to try that theory out on, say, a lion or an elephant. That said, I have used .22LR to dispatch horses, Fallow and Roe at close range and it is very effective. For bigger animals the heavier, slower round is probably more effective as it tends to penetrate before expanding too much. The .17 would tend to fragment at the first sign of heavy bone and not carry the energy deep enough to ensure a humane kill. -
A shotgun barrel will usually be perfectly safe with a few marks. There's no real risk until fairly serious pitting occurs as the pressures are fairly low. Instead of sending it for re-proof straight away, and exposing it to a massive overstress with the associated risk of damage, take it along to a good gunsmith and get them to inspect the bore. They should be able to tell you whether it is safe quite easily.

Which rifle to apply for - 1st application

I'm not sure I go for the Quad methodology. Swapping the barrel will inevitably necessitate re-zeroing of the scope, which is time consuming and, especially for the .17, costly. It means that you can't just go to the cabinet and guarantee to have the correct tool ready and properly zeroed for the job you need to do. Also if you have only one piece of ground you are likely to scare everything away zeroing. You can buy two good quality second hand rifles (CZ452 for example) for the price of a quad and a spare barrel. I think it's a nice idea, and they are great bits of engineering, but t -

Firstly, forget "need". You don't have to prove you "need" a specific calibre to have it issued. You need to prove "reasonable cause" to hold. Is shooting foxes reasonable cause to hold a .223? Of course it is! If you need to shoot foxes at the ranges you mention then I'd say you have every right to ask for it, and THEY need to make a case that says you're not allowed it because of public safety concerns. Don't fall for the "let them tell you what you can have" BS, it's not up to them to make those decisions and you'll almost certainly end up not having the proper tools to do what you want -
Only if you've got the time to break it.

You got a bigger one Bob? You around during the day tomorrow?

In England/Wales, the minimum calibre for ALL deer species is .240", with a minimum muzzle energy of 1700 ft.lb is required. For Muntjac and chinese water deer, the minimum calibre is .220" with a minimum ME of 1000 ft.lb. In Scotland you can use any calibre, but their is a minimum limit to ME, Muzzle Velocity AND bullet weight. For Roe only, your minimum is 50gr bullet, with a minimum ME of 1000 ft.lb and a minimum MV of 2450 fps. For any other deer, the minimum bullet weight is 100 gr, a minimum MV of 2450 fps and a minimum ME of 1750 ft.lb.

Yes I have, and yes I have. And if you are shooting to a cull plan, and have to get the numbers, it's the only way to do it. If you shoot mum first and baby runs away, you have a long follow up to make sure the youngster is humanely killed and doesn't starve to death. Of course you can risk shooting mum first and hope that the baby hangs around, but it's not really the done thing. Now, if you shoot the calf/fawn/kid first then if mum heads for the hills, you have no welfare issue and no need for a lengthy, hard and expensive follow up. If she hesitates long enough for you to get the s

Liars or am I doing something wrong?
matt_hooks replied to Leamo's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
rich, you're talking bollocks. A group is just a collection of individual shots. I don't shoot groups, I treat each shot individually. If I have the same point of aim on each shot, but the point of impact is different, then my group will be a large one. Now, if I'm lucky and the shot I take at a rabbit happens to be one of the "good" ones then the result is one dead rabbit. However, if I'm unlucky and the bullet fired at the rabbit is one of the bad ones then I will at best miss completely, and at worst wound the animal I'm shooting at. A group is a good indicator of th -
Wanted Wanted PCP rifle in Kent ideally please
matt_hooks replied to longdog13's topic in Gun's and Rifle's
Do you mean a PCP? Or are you looking for a rifle that fires Coke? -
The .243 will kill anything in the UK, if you hit it in the right place. (Including boar) I shoot quite a few fallow, red, sika and muntjac, all with the .243. Most of the three bigger species are in an enclosed park, so are head/neck shot (follow up is easy as they can't get out of the park). If you hit any deer in the head with the .243 within about 500 yards you will kill it (I'm not talking about missed shots which take the jaw off) A bigger calibre can be an advantage in some situations. If you are in woodland and want a big blood trail then the chance of a bigger bullet going rig

Shooting Rabbits this time of Year
matt_hooks replied to Hmr Hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The Duncan, you can tell the difference between a buck and a doe at 60 yards? A full doe is a good kill, take out about 10 bunnies with one shot. Sadly it's about vermin control, and the kits won't go to waste. -
Whippet, you're mistaken about you committing an offence if the weapon is misused by someone you've lent it to. As long as they are aged 18 or over, you can lend away. Air rifles are uncontrolled. There is no licence, there is no register, nobody knows if you own a particular air rifle and they can be freely transferred from one person to another with no legal formalities. That said, posting a valuable commodity to a stranger to "try it out" sort of goes against the grain. I'd love to think I could trust people enough (and there are those on here I would happily trust with my life, le

Legal issues regarding applications
matt_hooks replied to PlasticJock's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
All of the law is readily available online, and people should do their research, if you'll excuse the pun "arm themselves properly" to deal with the hurdles the police will try and throw in their way. Forewarned is forearmed. -
gnash, a serious bit of advice. TAKE A FECKING PHONE! The mountain rescue bods have enough to do without having to hunt the hills for a lost eejit who couldn't take a bit of advice! Other than that, are you sure you'll be able to carry 7 days of rations in your pack? Even high energy density stuff you'll need a fair bit to keep you going. Add to that a tent and sleeping bag, and waterproofs, warm clothes and dry underclothes and you've got a fair bit of weight. Learn what foods are about where you're going (not much where you've chosen, but there are foods available) that will let you

Scope choice for an 11yr old?
matt_hooks replied to Woodworm1972's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The ratty is good for targets out to maybe 30 yards max. A decent 4x mag scope will mean he can see the target, but will not amplify any shake. People always think higher mag scopes, and variable mag, are better. Actually spending the same money on a decent fixed mag scope is probably better value for money.
