Shooting on common ground
matt_hooks replied to dai bando's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
mile, it's all well and good telling everyone the difference between "common law" and "statutory law", but that doesn't stop you being committed to a stretch at her majesties pleasure, because the people who have the power so to order work under the premise of statutory law. If you are willing to use "I choose not to be bound by your statutory law" as a defence, then I wish you luck! -
There is that Simon. As the gun will be in use by the owner, I should think that would be acceptable. Of course it'll only be an issue if something goes wrong anyway. It behoves the certificate holder to take "reasonable steps" to ensure the safety of the weapon. I'd say in the cabinet of another SGC holder would be reasonable steps. A trigger lock, or removing a vital part, will make doubly sure.

Most MV values are taken 10 feet from the muzzle, so the 3m above would be a pretty good approximation.

Sadly Jock I think you're right. Quick legislation, (and legislation written in response to an incident is almost by definition quick) is usually bad legislation. Look at the balls up over expanding ammunition post Hungerford! The firearms legislation needs a complete re-write, to make it consistent and fair, so that people can understand it. I have to say I think the police would have serious trouble enforcing most conditions on FAC's, as a lot of them don't meet one or more of the tests (fairness, plain english, evidenced, reasonable, of demonstrable benefit to the public safety) that a

Oh no, what have you done? You really shouldn't go around putting ideas in their heads! Seriously though, one FEO says that you can't another says "yeah, that's fine". Who should we believe? My understanding is the same as A&S, but apparently Wilts see it differently. I can't see how their POV is tenable under the existing law, but why should we believe A&S over Wilts? It dovetails nicely with our belief, but we must beware of "confirmation bias" when seeking advice. Why believe the pov that backs up our own over one that opposes it? You can see now how completely idiotic f

FD, don't tell people to go and fill their FEO's heads with ideas like that. Not only is it unreasonable and preposterous, it is also pretty much unenforcable, unless the certificate is specifically conditioned with such (and I'd say such a condition would be open to challenge under reasonableness as well as the bit in the HO guidance that states "the shooter will rightly wish to exercise choice of the calibres used". If I hold a 22cf that is conditioned for foxes, and a .243/25-06/308/7mm win mag/whatever that is conditioned for deer and fox, why on earth should I choose only the .22cf fo

It's not about how difficult/easy the shot is. It's about the consequence of a shot going wrong. If you shoot at rabbits head at 100 yards and miss a little bit, you are likely to miss the animal completely, or at worst hit the body. Any hit is likely to cause rapid death to such a small animal. However, if you shoot at a deer head and miss slightly, you are very likely to cause a wound which will not result in rapid death, but will engender a slow, painful death for the animal, either as a direct result of the shot via slow blood loss, or as an indirect result because of starvation (f

Fixing cabinet to plasterboard
matt_hooks replied to PlasticJock's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If it's an external wall then going through the plasterboard to the wall, and getting a good fixing in there, is the way forward. If it's a stud wall then good luck getting it approved. The only way you could possibly do it, which I've seen done in mobile homes, is to put a large steel plate on the wall where the cabinet is to go, and one on the other side of the wall, then fix through outer steel, wall and inner steel into the cabinet. If you have a mate who's handy with a welder get him to weld the outer plate once the bolts are passed through. -
Mike. Do you have permission to shoot in the ladies garden? Will the pellet stay within the bounds of land you have permission to shoot over? Forget about the 50 foot rule. As long as your pellet doesn't stray onto the road there is no way you are going to injure anyone, and a moderated PCP air rifle isn't going to cause anyone any alarm. Sooo, if the answers to the questions in the first question are "yes" then I say we all have pigeon pie... HOWEVER... If the answer to any one is no, or even "maybe" then don't even consider it!

Scarecrow, if that is the case then why do people prefer to use the .308 instead of the .243 because it causes less meat damage?

can anybody help me out with a deer i.d?
matt_hooks replied to armchair _hunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Muntjac breed all year round, so there's no point protecting them for any part of the year. The situation is the same in the rest of the UK. -
The correct spelling of the trade name is "Delrin"

The police are not experts on deer and how to control them. If we are to accept regulation or compulsory training then it should be enacted in law, not made up on the spur of the moment by a firearms liaison officer or licencing manager, who has no real understanding of the issues! If there is to be extra legislation, then it needs to be properly formulated, with reference to experts in the field (excuse the pun). So no, I don't support the police implementing arbitrary, unfair, oft changing and unpredictable rules of their own concoction in areas over which they properly have no juris

nod, correct, you don't need the shotgun on your certificate. (Remember the 72 hour rule?)

Following on from your original post hunter, I think we should clarify what the Polices roll is in firearms licencing, and more specifically what it definitely is not. The police are tasked with deciding whether you can be allowed to safely have firearms. That is it. Nothing less and nothing more. It is certainly not their job to decide whether you are competent to gralloch a deer safely so that it can enter the food chain. Whilst I agree that there is FAR more to taking deer for food than pulling the trigger, the police have no interest in it other than that your actions adhere to th

According to the firearms act 1968 (amended) 11 (5) Now, the two issues are obvious. Who is classed as an occupier, and how "present" do they need to be? The guidance states that "anyone holding the shooting rights over the land" can be classed as an "occupier". There's no mention of "ownership" or anything like that. For the "estate condition" to be used with rifles, the wording is similar but different, but to use that defence the guidance suggests that "within sight and earshot" is sufficient. You are renting the shooting rights, and so could be classed as an "occupier".

Brown hare is on the approved quarry list for an air rifle. Just need to remember that they are a lot bigger than buggs, take a bit more killing. It's illegal to lamp them, which is a pain as it's difficult to tell the difference under the lamp.

Rob, it's all about distance. A dB value is meaningless without the related distance from the source!

Crossman make Accupel. I like the RWS superdome if you can get them. I find the crossman pellets are very hard, and hence don't damage as easily as the softer pellets. Also the AA pellets have a thin skirt. The thin, soft skirt will obturate more readily when pressure is applied, forming a better seal with the barrel and in theory at least giving better velocity and stabilisation. A deformed pellet is unlikely to allow pressure to build up sufficiently to allow the pellet to be pushed into the grooves of the rifling, and so is likely to shoot to a different, and unpredictable, point of imp

Is the bloke who sells airguns still in the covered market in Truro? Years since I've been there, but I still have the three rifles I bought from him. As for the SMK, I'm afraid it's a contraction for "Silly MistaKe"

.410 is a great little cartridge, and if you are good will kill as well as a 12 bore. However, it does put less lead downrange and so can be more difficult to kill reliably with. The hush power are great with subsonic ammunition for noise sensitive areas, but will take a bit of getting used to. The single shot will be limiting for most kinds of vermin work imho. A moderated 12 bore will put a little bit more lead down range, you can get all sorts of carts for it.

What do the strike marks on the rims look like? Compare a fired round with a misfire, do they look the same? What make of ammunition are they (ok, what are they branded, they're all made by the same factory)

Plastic pellets?!
matt_hooks replied to Skot Ruthless Teale's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I had some prometheus but made from tin rather than plastic, and they were accurate and deadly from my PCP! The plastic ones worked well in some PCP's, but springers seem to be prone to melting the skirts due to the heating of the air in the rapid compression. On balance I'd leave well alone. -
does this mean that it gets louder the farther away you are?... ('pologies - couldn't resist) Spherical area surely - which would make it cubic, no? (I don't know the forumulae so I'm genuinely asking, not trying to be a smartass this time. ) In any case - I'll take a measurement this weekend of the HW100 FAC .177 & the HW100K .22, but it'll be with a Nexus S so I'm not sure how much bearing you could put on it. I've no doubt mind that anyone taking the measurement with the same incarnartion of the iPhone should get equivalent results (assuming consistant test patterns,
