Did exactly that for exactly one year, a number of years ago when I was still training. After about a week, my taste buds came back to normal, all my food tasted better, and I was able to train a bit harder, and started gaining steadily again. Cut out ALL alcohol as well, which also definetely helps with the training. After a few weeks, the mrs bought me a couple of my previously 'usual treats', they tasted like shite! Don't hardly eat anything like that since then, apart from the odd bit of ice cream now and again.
And yeah, eating a good, nutritious diet is certainly cheaper than buy
