Most foxes dug from one burrow
steveS.Yorks replied to dave a's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Sometimes it depends on where youre hunting, over the years ive come to the conclusion urban foxes are much less terratorial than country foxes,my mate bolted 10 in a few hrs a couple of weeks ago in a relativly small area, and multiple foxes using one large earth or rock pile[ussually steel slag,in our case] isnt that unusual. At one time i noticed a lot of the urban foxes we caught were fairly well scarred on their snouts,no doubt in my mind these marks were from other foxes, but these days theres a ridicilous number of them so maybe they have adapted and changed their behaviour? -
Maybe they could mate i dont know but its ussually mother natures way of saying "dont do it" a shame if shes a good worker but theres probably a good reason she isnt coming in at all,i wouldnt do it,just my own personal opinion.

most foxs you have had in one season?
steveS.Yorks replied to shaver's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Depending on where you live in N.Yorks it can be pretty hard,i had a lot of permission up there at one time and it was rubbish really,to many keepers using the rifle/lamp and a massive acerage to get hidden in,we more or less told the keeper we werent bothered unless he could locate the active earths before we went up,we did have a few good days but it was the leanest area we worked. -
This was a fairly popular x round our way yrs ago,and ive seen a few work, wouldnt call them a lurcher but will catch rabbits while bushing, they tend to have very fast reactions and reflexes,a good type for ferreting and ussually they have a good nose.

All these big hitting diggers on here and hardly anybody wants to post? Best day ive ever had was 6,my old digging mate had 10 a couple of weeks ago,im not quoting a season. -
Hes probably an anti gathering info, bloke did it yrs ago offering permission loads applied and gave him their details, fair play though he was prosecuted, didnt stop the info going to the wrong people though.

This should be good. -
Heard it myself, what a bunch of tossers, and the bird being interviewed was Heather Mills, the bird Mc Cartney [tosser] married,so we know she's a rabid anti,i would like to stick them in a survival situation with a live pig as the only food available and see how long their principals hold up?

I never said this in my earlier posts but i fall into the camp of keeping dogs until their health is failing,i would never shoot a dog because it was just to old to work anymore,i respect the right of lads who absolutely keep them to work and not as pets to pts,its their choice and conciense, personally ive only ever done the deed with good reason.

Got to agree with this post, under no circumstances should she go for the child,i had an exellent small lurcher yrs ago and he suddenly for no reason attacked a child, although no real damage was done he was pts the same day, just not worth the risk. Its obviously something to do with having the litter[hormones..ect]but maybe the dogs faulty, and maybe the pups will turn out faulty? And as for re homing who in their right mind would take a dog that was suspect with kids, even people without kids ussually have nephews, neices and neighbours kids to consider, personally i would do the right thi

Well mate i can go back a bit and to put things into perspective about percentages of good/bad/chancers i can say this, During the 1980's i belonged to a local terrier club, just from memory i would say there were around 50 members[not to sure now]of the 50 members i would say around 7 or 8 lads did a fair bit of digging, another 10 dug a few every year, half of the rest had at sometime dug a fox and the rest couldnt find their arse with both hands, and if anything im being generous.

Got to be a good crumble for me,rhubarb or apple, got to be baked till browned properly though.

Strange trait for this breeding mate, beddy blood ussualy makes them very keen takers? Ive seen 2 whippets and a collie/grey with the same problem, slow to come on and then letting them go,none of them have got any better and are write offs. Maybe some rats to get her blood up is a possibility, but it dont look good mate.

This is what happens when a bunch of PC bleeding hearts run a country,no doubt when they get to court their solicitor will make them sound like victims of a bad childhood and it will be anybodys fault exept theirs,a light sentance and out to re offend in a matter of months. Fair play to the old boy, shame he didnt kill the c**ts and do the world a favour.

been in the game 29 year , no reverse to me means a dog that wont stash , i lost the bitch when she pushed up tight , broke through and she was trapped tight , she stayed till dug , most grafting terriers will get some damage , i prefer a dog to be where i get a mark , not up and down the tube , just my preference , no reverse doesnt have to mean no brains. Like i said mate im not having a dig at your post in particular,to me "no reverse" means they just run in and try and latch on regardless of hammer they take, ive had/seen a few myself, even the clever dogs ive seen would pick some d

Ive just had this same problem with a whippet, gave her nearly 3 yrs and failed,re homed her and no future pups will be sold to working homes,if shes bred at all that is.

Like you say mate do have their uses sometimes, but personally i wouldnt want the type although i admire gameness. My old dog was very game but used his head with it and killed a good number to ground without getting badly mauled,he developed a knack, yet even when we bred him to a very well tested sensible mates bitch they produced hard dogs,i also bred him to my overly game bitch [expecting the worst really] and the dog pup i kept was turning into a good sensible worker before his untimely death? go figure.

The most intellegent dog ive ever seen was a lab x whippet,he belonged to a mate and was an outstanding worker, although obviously limited on the running ability a little,he caught just about everything possible but more by brains than speed,he had an exellent nose, brilliant retreiver, worked well with the gun and did tackle fox on the odd occasion. I would have one tommorrow if i knew it would turn out like him.

It depends what you mean by a "hard dog" is a hard dog one that crashes into everything regardless of punishment and eventually kills its fox?and is ussually laid up for a good while after. Or a dog that can kill foxes regularly and only take the odd bad bite,i know which i would rather have and have had. Youll find a lot of the tales of dogs killing foxes and coming out smashed is a case of lads not digging the dead fox,but thinking the fox must be dead because the dog is so damaged and couldnt possibly have quit being so game,so must have killed the fox.
-
"no reverse gear" and "lost on a dig" belong in the same sentance mate. Said this before and its true, the easiest thing to breed are "hard dogs" with no brains,Nuttalls being doing it and making good money from fools for years,if all people want is dogs that enter and plough into quarry you shouldnt be in the game imo. I know lads like this and they ussually have different terriers every few months, ussually because theyve lost it to ground/its died from being damaged or jacked. Thats not a dig at this post, you dont say how the dog was lost, but "no reverse" should read "no good"
-
Why not breed a "rock" dog to an "earth" dog and try and produce pups that are good at both, makes sense to me? And rocks make dogs imo,i know why some dogs dont make rock dogs, but my rock dogs made short work of earths, why are your rock dogs not very good in earths? i dont get this.

Problem with this sort of thing is the papers anti's will probably try and say its a failed fighting/baiting dog and the owners just burnt it because it was a failure, bullshit granted but joe public wont know any better. Hope these bas***s get what they deserve.SCUM.

I wouldnt breed from a bitch of much less than 3 yrs old tested or not,but if the bitch comes from a line of workers it wont make any difference to the pups if she hasent seen a single fox as she carries the genes. If you want to create a working type/strain you have to test and cull the ones that dont make the grade, even then you will have some failures. The one time i chanced a non worker to worker it was an intellegent guess, the non worker had come from good dogs a few generations back and the dog was really well bred,if you just breed hard ones to hard ones you end up with hard dogs that
