Something similar happened to me (not the dolphins). I was up north of Barcelona, basically the far North East of Spain. The water currents in this area are strong and notoriously cold for the Med. Swimming along with my flippers, snorkel but no wetsuit. The water was about 3m deep maybe a little more and cold but not deathly. I would have been roughly about 50-60m from the shore when I moved out to the edge of the rocks where the sea floor drops maybe a further 7-8m, instantly the water temp plummeted so quickly it felt like jumping into meltwater.
