  12. This was in relation to the caring for a litter, if you want to expand on the care of your working dog be my guest hedz i was replying to above post.
  13. good post agree 100%
  14. when i breed a litter it starts before they are born always worm the bitch out and make sure she is clean inside and out i also always put in a new bed in the kennel and cleanse kennel right through. when the pups are born there is always a heat lamp for them and the bitch.the pups are dewclawed at 2 to 3 days and wormed at 2 and 4 weeks and every 3 weeks untill they are ready to go.the bitch is fed 3 times a day on best meal and meat with milk and cereal every morning along vith vit c .plus multi vit in the evening meal . from 2 weeks old the pups are held and fed milky slops by finger rubbin
  15. in my eyes good stockmanship is someone who no matter what he is looking after they always look in top nick and fine fettle and a good stockman will always get anything to look its best .they are one of the few who can make a silk purse out of a pigs ear and tbh a real top stockman is quite rare these days as most people havnt got the time to take what it needs to be one ,
  16. here's the thing though you keep them for work but the reality is that thats your hobby I would not keep 1 spaniel if I didnt' do this job. dan its more a way of life than a hobby with me ive had them since i was born other than for a short time . way back in the seventies i packed a well paid job in and was working them flat out and beleive me there wasnt a running dog in the country that was worked harder than mine during this period.i have worked my dogs all., over the uk and met loads of good freinds through running the dogs,so to me its much more than a hobby. in my eyes anyway.out of
  17. dan mine are also kept just for work and also have the best of everything they are worked very hard and if not up to scratch then i dont keep them in fact the pup i reared got seriously injured start of week and i have a massive vets bill to pay but hoping she will fully recover.as she did it trying her guts out for me.as anyone who knows me will tell you i run my dogs hard and often .but feel there should be a bit of compassion involved in something that you have reared and spent time and money rearing up.the easy and cheap option would have been to have her put down but afraid thats not m
  18. danw i do keep a fair dog so when i breed one of mine i dont have trouble selling them when i advertised the pups that were not spoken for or sold i could have sold another six if i had had them and had people asking months later about them. tbh if i had to think about killing any healthy pups i bred i wouldnt bother breeding a litter and we can all beat about the bush fannying it up calling it culling but what it boils down to is killing a perfectly healthy pup that the person has bred.and me personally i wouldnt feel right doing that but at the end of the day thats only my personal opinion
  19. dont know what happened to above post lol. dan w ime 57 had lurchers all my life and bred quite a few litters but only when i want a new dog for myself and without sounding off yes i can do a litter very very good.and although i havnt got all the answers i know the differance between doing a litter properly and not doing it properly . what are you saying because ime not a prolific breeder and pushing puppies out year in year out i dont know hoew to rear a litter of lurcher pups properly. and i stick by my statement if you ddo the bitch and litter properly and put the time andexpense in they ca

  21. If only every one thought like this the well being of the bitch should always come before that of the pups a proper stock man can see when the number of pups is pulling the bitch and litter down and act appropriately there aint nothing big or hard about it, it is-just stockmanship a skill sadly lacking in most. Wouldn't a good "stockman" ensure that the bitch has ample food and care to compensate for what the pups take out of them? If you see the difference in a litter of say 6 pups as opposed to 11 has on a bitch and the litter then you would know that food aint gonna make the dif
  22. cant see why anyone would want to cull a perfectly healthy pup .yes if its sickly or poor fair enough but no other reason. and the old cabbage about to big a litter and pulling the bitch down bullshit .if you havnt got the time money or inclination to do the bitch and litter properly then simple dont breed to start with.last two litters ive bred 10 year ago and 18 months ago there were 11 in the one litter and 10 in the last litter and all were healthy and well done as were the dams themselves. no matter how many in the litter if you feed properly and put the hours in to the pups .ie start the
