    books

two very good reads away from lurchers and terriers are rich without money all about the flapping game in the 60s and 70s very very good read and all proceeds go to a very good cause close to the authers heart theres also a follow up called the craziest gamble both by trevor liddle a real gentlman. another top class read is THE KILLING ZONE all about a kid from the gorbals who runs riot and ends up in the forces and goes from one war zone to another ends up from not being able to read or write to becoming a barrister probally the best book ever read outside of my dog book collection.
  3. i really believe most dogs can be taught to lamp and catch quarry on the lamp many many years ago a freind had a pure border collie quite leggy and this caught rabbits for fun on the lamp and made it look easy .if you put the work into them most lurchers will become handy lampers . but if you keep them locked up and only go out once in a while their never going to be up to much .
  4. just because your lucky enough to have a dog/bitch with massive prey drive it doesnt mean you have to abuse the fact it has . its up to the owner to use their common sense to decide when they have had enough because with this type of animal it will keep going giving its best when others would have long decided to quit. when i started this thread i wasnt talking about the average lurchers prey drive but the ones with that bit extra that will go that extra bit to put game in the bag only trouble is with the wrong type of owner they are so easily abused because of their drive .
  5. somebody is shit hot with a camera if that had been me you would have had the odd tail and clumps of grass lol. cracking photographs and nice dogs .
  6. leading up to the ban the c alliance did an awfull lot of work and what a lot dont realise is that a breakaway group called the r. c. a./real countryside alliance did a huge of undercover stuff which cannot be printed on here suffice to say that what the r c a did made a lot of people take notice and made headlines in all the national newspapers and the people who were in the rca risked quite a lot sometimes a lot more than was healthy for them and lets be honest here even if you dont like or think they do enough the problem is their all we got so better to stick with them than nothing . ag
  7. wirral countryman i myself never said anything about you other than what you stated above and that was you never marched because it was a waste of time and money well in my opinion thats bullshit and its a good job we all didnt feel like that . i can see by your posts your an avid feildsportsman who loves his sport with his dogs and who has walked the walk doing what we all love. but i can assure you if you had been on any of those marches standing next to lurcher terrier and other dogmen and women you defo wouldnt have thought it was a waste of time . good hunting in whats left of the season
  8. ive gotta agree with your above post poacher mob handed across feilds have ruined coursing and in my opinion that more than anything else brought the problems that we now have trying to get a run was always taught get on the ground early first light have your runs and get back off no one the wiser and there to run again . driving the feilds have ruined even this now.
  9. my opinion is if cameran gets in he will keep his word and put it to a free vote which is all he has ever said he will do but to be honest i dont think it will ever be as it was the best we can hope for in my opinion and thats all it is is that he will licence it but i fear even then stag hunting and coursing will suffer i truly hope ime wrong on both acounts .
  10. wirralman if we all thought like you there would be no marches or protests like you i have never been legal up untill a few years ago never had permission but hunted all my life with lurchers and been on every march and done a lot more to stop the ban things i cant put on a open forum .not being legal has not stopped me trying to stop the ban coming into force there were old men in their eighties on the marches men who have poached all their life but still did their bit like thousands and thousands of others to stop the ban in london and brighton cardiff and lots of other marches there were l

  14. i have 2 vehicles and one must definately go because of coming out of work with no prospect of another job.the first is my subaru outback est t reg in vgc throughout 2.5 cc ideal dog car 4x4 hardened suspension every conceivable extra and a brand new mot 120.000 miles the second is my y reg peugeot extra twin side loading van long mot and taxed i have owned it for just over 2 years and been all over the country in it it is very very reliable and has never let me down 1.9 cc deisel over 50 miles to the gallon on a run as its the non turbo version it has high mileage but is serviced very
  15. what is members on here ideal size for a lurcher if they could pick it my own would be 25 ins tts as its a handy size to do all quarry post and pre ban. i know small andlarge dogs can also do it all but just wondered if there was a size that the majority of members would pick in a ideal world given the chance cheers.
  16. an old bloke who had lurchers all his life when i asked him many many years ago looks a bit big to me about one of his dogs replied son he can get down to his bowl of grub faster than any little un ive got in the kennel and i suppose he was right i know small lurchers tend to be able to turn on a sixpence but seen them run wide enough to have to have a airfeild as well and rio a big 27 tts bitch i owned used to turn on a sixpence as good as any little un i think its more down to agilaty and practice rather than size. although my ideal lurcher size would be 24 to 25 to the shoulder
  17. this has turned out quite a good thread as i thought it would when i put it up and it also shows how lots of us like a differant type of running dog which again is good because it would be a boring old world if we all owned and ran the same kind of dog thats what makes the lurcher so unique to other breeds of dog the big variation in looks and type. in the dogs themselves and the people who own them.
  18. i also changed over from red mills to gain28% because red mills changed their formula a while back and bags varied from bag to bag some much oilier than others and dogs went very loose on it find gain as good as anything out there and better than most .the ingrediants are very similar to aussie formula which is supposedto be the best out there even looks and soaks down exactly the same.
  19. i use gain 28% for my racing greyhounds and lurchers and tried all of them and find this as good and better than most i also feed meat and vitamins but if any are off injured or lurchers in the summer i lower the prot for them and buy a resting feed all dogs need a certain amount of fat in their diet. and to much protien with not enough work is not good for the dogs at the end of the day its all about balance and common sense if you want to know all about diet for a working/racing dog you could do worse than buying charlie listers book on greyhounds full of usefull tips on feeding and trainin
  20. leegreen you just quoted me and i dont know where you have read what you put up but it 100 per cent wasnt me that said that or anything like it check what your writing about before you post it THANKS
  21. over the last 40 odd years mine have caught plenty of hedge rabbits the secret is knowing which ones to slip on and which ones to leave alone .the ones with the ultimate prey drive will catch plenty on the hedge the ones that run clever and want to pick their rabbits willnot at the end of the day its each to their own but i know which i prefer . but its good that were all dfferant.
  22. most greyhound supplies stock gain also most shops will get it in for you if you ask .
