  1. It really depends on where you live doesn't it. Big numbers are nice, but sometimes there just aren't enough rabbits, hare, fox etc. Which night is better, a night where you run 60 rabbits and take 30 home, or a night where you run 10 and your dog takes 10 with grace and skill? As long as there's enough sport to get you out night after night that's what counts.
  2. Why not just tie two pieces of cord around your wrist. Slip the cords through your dogs collars and hold the other ends in your hand. You can let go of both pieces of cord at once or separately. Cheap and simple.
  3. Yer mate - same - mine are always (apart from this one) home made, and just have holes, no mesh. I have now removed the mesh, that was the first time i'd used the box and i did think about removing it befre i put them in, but as they were only going to be boxed for a short time i didnt think it would cause a probem. The jill that got cut up is looking a lot more perky now, which is good. But i'm still down a ferret, due to the dead jill, who was probably the best i had. I hope i can find a replacement, i have a few good kits here for later in the season, but finding an adult, especially a good
  4. Thanks mate. If i can't get hold of a decent working adult down here i might end up driving your way! Haha.
  5. Firstly let me wade into this by saying. . . . . YOU. ARE. A. COMPLETE. f*****g. MORON No we have set the tone. . . . . They were puppies not a cat, so actually pay attention to what your arguing about! As for animals not having rights etc and it all being a matter of morals, well it's clearly not, as animals cruelty is in fact ILLEGAL, is it not? If i own a horse that irritates me and so i decide to starve it to death, or set it on fire, i may get in some legal trouble, would you not think? Same goes for hunting certain animals in a certain way I.E I find it perfectly morally
  6. Cheers Gem, i hope so. I'm heading out next two days as well, so f**k knows what i'm going to do. WIll have to just use the one jill and my mates hob. It;s tough tho as a lot of the warrens are really large.
  7. I agree Gem, but the other problem is, there are so many dodgy folk, i'd be skeptical of buying a pup / dog from a car park etc Could easily be stolen or something else. But also i wouldn't have folk i didn't know to my place to buy an animal. . . . . . so what do ya do!
  8. So last night i decided i would get up early and head down the road to try my luck for an hour or two at a new piece of ground i've been asked to have a go at. It's only a couple of paddocks and a piece of woodland, but it's like Watership down. So i got up this morning intending to take my three jills out. Opened up the court and gave them all a whistle, they came out but one was missing. Opened up the nest box and she had passed away. Not a good start But i decided to soldier on anyway with the two remaining jills. . . Loaded them up into a new ferret box i bought (i usuall
  9. I should have said that what i said earlier only applies when your working one or two ferrets in smallish warrens where digging is just a case of breaking through a foot or two. In these situations its very rare we ever get a dig. When we are working older, bigger, deeper, warrens and using multiple ferrets, everyone gets a collar, as like you said it saves the hassle and time.
  10. Just out of interest have you been out with any? yes i have been out with some and dont rate them far to small cant take a kicking and cant last the day but you should no that you seem to no everything else I don't know much about Micros as i have never had one, hence why i asked, as you seem to have an absolute opinion on their uselessness and certainty of meeting death out ferreting. So relax. will i have seen them work so your intrest has been answered Thankyou. I've still never seen one in the flesh, i'd quite like a day out with some just to see.
  11. You sound like a nice enough bloke and have a nice pup but do yourself a favour and do it properly and walk up a squatter on a cold, cloudy, windy, rainy night rather than being a lazy c**t. And if you decide to take the lazy c**t option then know that it's illegal and you should probably not mention it on here.

  13. A good locator solution is to have one ferret collared up ad run the rest without collars. If a ferret goes awol, you run the collared ferret through and it finds them (hopefully). COllars do my head in mainly because they don't fit through the nets easily.
  14. well done mate very true.a pro should have all the tools of the trade to tackle all situations, there wont be 1 pro ferret company or person that wont take the lurcher if the conditions allow.example.you just netted up and entered ferret when farmer comes over to have a chat and a rabbit hit the net and slips it and run across field, then one comes out a missed pop hole again away.and so on .you may look a right tit.if the dogs thier doing its job you would look like you knew what your doing.and stubby (all the gear no idea)ive been ferreting a 20 yrs more than you fella.stick to doing peoples g
  15. yes true but if your were a professional a dog is a must.lots of good ferreters out there but a dog makes the team . Still sounds a bit off mate. Whilst MOST professional ferreters may have a running dog, not having one does not stop you being a pro ferreter. If ferreting is your professional game a running dog only accounts for a very small percentage of your catch. A MARKING dog however IS a real bonus, perhaps a MUST. Was this what you meant? As Chalky also points out some will shake their heads at the thought of a dog on their land and some land is VERY unsuitable for working a d
  16. A large amount of the land we work is covered by huge tracts of forest, from very thick pine plantation to more spread out deciduous woodland. A lot of this is cut across with gullys, bankings, bits of fence, streams, patches of bog, the odd pheasent pen . . . you name it. And very little of it is flat. It's a bit of a death trap for a dog, but it's there and we have to deal with it. The dogs go out in it from a young age, playing, running through it and exploring. As young'uns they have plenty of bumps and scrapes, but luckily not at too great a speed, and slowly they find their gears and lea

  18. Thats a stupid comment mate. Owning a running dog has f**k all to do with how good a ferreter you are. I've met some complete idiots with lurchers and some VERY good ferreters without.
  19. no mate i dont like the killing of any young animals espicially like that so stop bieng a twat making stupid comments Yes mate it was obviously entirely aimed at you - as is every other action in the world. The world revolves around you doesn't it? What exactly is 'stupid' about what i said? And Danman - if your wanting a conversation with a nobhead you should probably go find a mirror. Scot Hunter / Tallyho - we find ourselves on a level a lot these days. I suppose everyone else has just forgotten the million page thread about the cat in a bin . . . . . .
  20. f*****g horrible bitch. Sickening. One thing i did think tho - if it had been kittens - half the folk on here would have been leaving very different comments. . . . .
