  1. true in many senses, but there is also the paradox that many shooting estates were owed by landed gentry that hunted with the mounted packs, as such many of those tat owned the estates wanted a certain level of fox population maintained and so many keepers had to go about their jobs with the added frustration of getting into shit for being too effective at their fox control. This is not just from my imagination but from conversations with keepers and land owners from a generation or two ago. Also back in the day what you said may have prevailed on many shoots, but there was also a lot of l
  2. Very good point Malt. . .. .. and i'm not talking about a nationwide loss, but just large regional areas. Although you say more foxes killed, more chance for the young to survive, but its the young an inexperianced that often take the brunt of the shooting in the first few months of their lives. Very few areas are not heavily hunted now, even if permission is not given, folk shoot from the road or just walk on illegally. It is a very efficient and quick method and an area can be cleared VERY quickly. I know the nature abhors a vacum idea but it takes TIME for a vacum to fill, especially with
  3. What got me thinking was listening to some bloke who had shot something like 7. . . . . half of them cubs. . . . . .. just after the corn was cut. By his own admission where he was shooting was crop land for miles and miles in all directions . . . . . . and he was calling it pest control???
  4. To the O.P - if you are going to keep them i would advise getting a sizeable cage with plenty of cover for them in it, i.e rocks, piece of log, maybe a pine branch etc. . . . lots of stuff for them to hide away in etc. If they are eating meat then feed them only whole carcasses, rabbit, birds etc. For more info look here - http://wildlife1.wildlifeinformation.org/S/00Man/MammalHusbandryTechniques/UKMHusbIndTech/HR_M_Mustelinae.htm Might be of some help. Jai.
  5. Is that statistically supported or just a guess? I'm not sure more people hunted 50/60 years ago (firstly there was a war on . . . .. ) and those that did probably hunted more for true pest control, or to feed themselves. . .and the quarry reflected this . . . . i think that fox control is higher than it has ever been and now a lot more people hunt them with success for sport and go activly looking for them rather than defending their interests?
  6. Where do you lamp? I think you should come out and see some dogs run a few before mouthing off about bullshit, i have seen five caught regularly on the lamp on some real good hares mate. I dont think you would be able to buy one for a grand but if you have some money in your pocket bring it with you and we can have a small bet. As stated in an earlier post this was an exceptional night,in winter, around salisbury plain so dont keep on about what wont be caught.Your dogs may not be as good as you think you know its easy to become kennel blind. Why run rabbits on a golf course and take a chance
  7. Thats right EVERYONE MUST THINK AND ACT LIKE A KEEPER. If your keeping birds then having stoats about is maybe a problem, if not then they dont cause any harm and are more likely to cause some good. They may be vermin in certain situations or certain places but thats a ridiculous basis for eradicating them on site or not trying to save one if found. Good sense there, a pest is only a pest when its causing a problem. Aye mate . . . . its something many on this site just CANNOT grasp.

  9. Alright, i'll be brief, and firstly state that this isnt an opinion, it's a question or series of questions . . . . Since the hunting ban, a lot more people are killing foxes, especially with rifles at night. Although this is a very effective form of pest control, would members consider it sport also? Do a lot of people shoot foxes on the lamp in areas where it serves no pest control purpose? By this i mean . . . . .an animal only becomes a pest when it is causing negative impact, so a fox that is only living and hunting on arable land is not a pest, but in fact an ally to the farmer, as
  10. If you think you'll be dead by 60 you need to look after yourself a bit more mate. Enjoy what you are when your it. . . . . .
  11. I can't believe that was coming out of the mouth of someone from the NFU. . . . . “Farmers are allowed to kill rabbits on their own land or hire someone to do it for them, but they must be professionals and licensed gun holders.". . . .. . wtf???
  12. Yes your right, i was tired last night. . . . . . . it doesnt make sense for a rabbit to have seen a ferret more than once or twice. The mystery continues . . . . . .
  13. when you some where you shunt be Two dogs dont make it quicker . . . . .. and if your somewhere you shouldnt be. . . . him barking aint gonna help.

We have stoats knocking about and we keep chickens. I did wonder if the stoats would have a go at the chooks, but they never have. What's their natural prey ? Anything they can catch pretty much but they love a rabbit. A great little
  16. Ah bill hook they look just the job Me too, I clear holes, partner follows laying purse nets down full hedge. Go for a drink a fag and a chat back at vehicle. Go back to first warren done with ferrets quietly. This way this gives chance for bunnies to calm down. Beauty about this is if any slip the nets then theres a good chance of backnetting. I have seen us take a full morning to prepare setting 100+ nets before getting out the ferrets. Cant chance putting in all the effort a week before for poachers to do it after all the hard work done clearing out. Dillan The chap who comes
  17. I didnt just mean doubling up is crap. . . . . but if its barking and you want to double up, you need to run it single for a time until it builds its confidence etc. . . should stop it barking. Maybe its being over matched with the dog its running with or being competitive?
  18. And to feed yourself and your family. . . . . Your right though, the hunting world is now a very sad one. We have been flooded with ignorant people, aggressive people . . . people doing it for all the wrong reasons. They are not hunters, not part of the countryside. . . . they bring shame on all of us. Most of them are children or men with the minds of children and are none too bright. They want a machine, a numbers machine, a killing machine. You hear shit on here 'i'm off to kill some stuff tonight', 'we are the killing crew', 'i've had loads of dogs . . . . in 2 years' it goes on. Many
  19. . . . . don't double him up. Sorted.

  22. Any ideas? Got one, need another. Jai.
  23. To be fair now that you have picked them up, handled them and kept them at home for a while you probably shouldnt release them, chances of mum finding them and them surviving are VERY slim. You have them now, so make the best of it.
  24. don,t use collars,i,m a bit old fashioned lol,but i know what your saying about character,i got the impression yesterday ones going to be very determined and the others a bit less, but it was only first time so time will tell, cheers (some idiot on here dyed his pink!) just since i was brung up i will say in my defence the dye was only food dye and lasted like 3 days , im total new to ferreting and i had a silly idea , and NOW nobody will let me live it down thanks again ideation lol Sorry mate, idiot was a bit harsh, but i think it really is one of the daftest things i'v
