  1. Like the fella said, try moving backwards as she comes in, also crouch down, when she does start to come in. Maybe get a treat she likes and use it to get her the last couple of yards. Also try shortening the distance your doing retrieves at. Also maybe try with a dead rabbit.
  2. I had a bit of a daft day today, the high light being a rabbit that hit the net and the net snagged, the dog rushed in to grab the rabbit as it kicked off the net, dived, the rabbit jumped, landed on dog, ran over dog and did a flying leap across a gully (where i was stood) . . . . .. and i managed to catch the little f****r around the waist in mid leap only to be hit by dog who had followed rabbit. Still held on mind Dog also did an impressive flying leap to catch a pheasant out of the air.
  3. A good spaniel will investigate and flush EVERY living thing in a piece of cover / wood. We put up foxes just about every shoot day and often on the boundry days Had some fun working a few springers through maize.
  4. Goats milk or lactose free milk is best as they cant actually break down lactose so there is no point giving it to them. I whip up some eggs and goats milk after a hard day.
  5. caught a rabbit with my hands today!

  6. He means he doesn't want to kill off the rabbits as he wants to bring his dog on lamping with them because they squat well etc.
  7. THis country is f*****g pathetic, a bit of cold and a light sprinke of snow and everyone shits themselves and EVERYTHING shuts down. Yes we may not get extreme weather every year. . . . . .except that now we do, and we have been predicting this snow for a while, so where is the excuse? I've lived in some supposedly 'backwards' countries where there is feet of snow on the ground for months and its at least - 10 every day and still everything goes on as normal. I was sitting on buses and trains and catching flights in Lithuania at -27. Britain.. . . . . MAN THE f**k UP!
  8. Eat it or feed it to animals. Spend all winter filling a few big chest freezers. If there is an excess i give it away to local folk or friends.
  9. This country is pathetic.

  10. . . . . . . and so is cat food, when rabbits are free!
  11. Yer mate i'm loving this weather its pushing them all to ground, dogs having a field day like you said. I'm still up for heading your way if your game?
  12. Wont work through the ground. Works above ground.
  13. You can only go so far as guaranteeing that 'if trained and entered properly' it should be able to do the job it was bred to do. Although i got a sort of guarantee with the lat pup i got, basically that if i was disappointed in the dog with regard to its physical capabilities or prey drive i could have my money back.
  14. If you give a f**k about the state of our sport and the kind of name its got. . . . . .dont support hancock by buying a pup from him. Its that simple. The man is producing as many pups as possible, sticking a name to them and a price tag and raking it in. Its incredibly sad and the bloke should be closed down. If you want a hancock dog then go find two of the dogs from him that DID make the grade and get a pup out of them, bred well away from his kennels, My ferreting partner has a 5/8 3/8 bitch bred like this and she is a very good dog, but she is a very good collie grey, not a very good hanc
  15. Noise i understand. . . .. the noise of someone talking. But picture this rabbit says 'f**k me thats a regal super king. . . . .. . i aint going out there - bound to be ferreters ahoy!' they dont however have a problem venturing out when they have been chased to ground by a huge dog or there are shotguns cracking off above. . . . . .and just imagine how loud your steps sound in this frost. Unless the wind blows down the holes i dont think thats going to be the biggest problem you got!
  16. Love this weather!!!! It pushes EVERYTHING to ground :-)

  17. It IS hardwork sometimes getting it right, well at least getting all the 'right' bits to come together at the same time, lurcher, terrier, ferrets, people. A lot to be organized. I was tearing my hair out with my pup recently, he was shaping up to be nothing but hassle (pure whippet), he liked to wander off, pick up nets and make noise. He's now just started seeing REGULAR work, an hour or so most evenings out with the ferrets and a couple of full days a week and its finally clicked, although i must admit a lot of that is him now being worked a long side a much older dog who is steadyness pers
  18. A good ferreting dog is worth its weight in gold. Were we work without one there is not a lot of point in going out. Anyhow - dogs develop their own style and then the young uns copy the older ones. I used to be of the opinion that i didnt like the dogs to grab the rabbits and hold them in the net. I used to think that they should be sitting up there watching out for the next one that i might miss when i was untangling the one thats just bolted. However ferreting big sets strung along bankings and either side of fences with lots of fallen trees, cover ad stuff to get in the way. . . .
  19. It has nothing to do with percentages. A lurcher is ANY running dog that contains pure sight hound and non sight hound breeds. So that would be both collie/grey and even something a daft as salukixpatterdale would technically be a lurcher (whether it could do the job is an entirely separate question). A long dog is ANY running dog that contains only pure sight hound breeds (the classics being whippet/grey, saluki/grey and deerhound/grey). I dont think it is possible to neatly divide in performance between long dogs and lurchers but in a historical sense lurchers were bred as such to disgu
  20. Stick him on the floor so he feels secure and let the rabbit go still and he will go in for a better grip. Then you take the rabbit away. I had a funny one today. Ferret drew the rabbit. There was one down and a lot of bumping but no bolt so i went to enter another jill into a bolt hole and as i put her head in the hole she struck, latching onto the head of the rabbit that was obviously about to bolt.
  21. Ferreting tomorrow :-)

  22. Very good points matey. But i would also say mikes lines can take some punishment. My pup went into the freezing river today after some ducks and got himself out (thank god) gave himself a shake and the hunted on.
  23. Stand back. Watch the dogs. They are smarter than you are when it comes to this game.
  24. People are scared of trying something new. But trying something new is a big risk sometimes when we are talking about 10 years of your life with a beast. Also some folk just want something 'different' with more regard to form than function.
  25. You CANNOT go wrong with one of mikes dogs. They are hard work as they have such high prey drive and such big balls. But they are prime!
