  1. few mate i know run dogs out at 6 month on fox.. if its no good its culled their and then,, and for me i think its a joke.. 6 month is no age to run rabbits never mind fox.. and as we know staggs can take up till 3 year old to hit maturity I wasn't suggesting we all test our dogs at 6 months and then cull them when they fail. Just that, the aussies and yanks i have spoken to, seem to have better all round stockmanship.
  2. Aye, but the aussies etc will cull a lot harder than us.
  3. As far as i am aware mine and Johnny's pup's are 3/4 Lurcher and 1/4 Collie..so in my eye's they are lurcher based lurcher's.. ,, Aye, and how much of that 'lurcher' is collie Look mate, i'm not knocking it, but you can't argue that, that particular branch of the minshaw 'family', is heavily collie influenced. I think it works out about half collie in them pups, anyhow. I'm not knocking it, in any way, shape or form, and it's a fairly pointless argument (bit like this thread), but them pups, don, etc, are lurchers, collie blooded lurchers. My earlier point was, that mi
  4. Richard - He is about 21.5 " tts. I would have to say that he took to working VERY naturally, and that was a problem for a while, in terms of his obediance, all he wanted to do was hunt, and not for you, a very independant little dog. It's taken a long time to get to a point where we understand what each other need / want in the field, i have learned to let him do his thing and trust in him, and he has learned that he needs to at least think about where i am, and if he hears the whistle, to come running. Weezel - I think it's hard to beat free running and hunting up for general all round
  5. Love the 1st pic,I'm guessing he was after a squirrel Yep, tree rat hunting I quite like the photo as it gives an idea of the muscle tone in his back end. Weezel - To be honest, mine doesn't get any particular 'fitness' work, just out for a couple of hoours each day, free running and hunting up in the woods, covering a good few miles. But he isn't the kind of dog to just walk at your side, he is always on the go! As to feeding, he gets some buiscuit and then usually fish, or some meat and veg mixed in, along with bones etc. When the season strts i lamp him for fitness.
  6. Top Left. You will find a 'search bar'. Use it.
  7. Doesn't really work. You can try to stink them out with a creosote mix, but probably of limited use on a deep warren. I'd just ferret it, and make sure you start early. Edited to add - and take a bar and some metal cutters. We once had a dig that went through the middle of a buried car!
  8. Not working fit, just run of the mill summer fit -
  9. Right, i get what you are trying to say, and there are different parts of the minshaw line (so to speak) where some breeds may come out stronger. However, take the don dog, who is something like 5/8 collie (mother being a pure collie), or your pup, and johnnys, where they are about half collie, and try to say they are not a collie x? Collie x = a dog that has been made up of crossing a collie with something, usually in this sense, some kind of running dog blood, not necessarily a pure grey. And this is what that 'branch' of the minshaw line is. Collie X running dog. Or in other terms,
  10. To be honest, the idea of a whippet x yorkie / chiwawa. . .. . did make me chuckle. But it could be worse, it could just be a yorkie x chiwawa. It was an accidental mating though right? How did you end up with it? On the upside, at least you are interested in working it, which is a good thing. You can't be blamed for thinking that this would be a site, full of folk into hunting, just ready to be helpful. You weren't to know that you would get the piss ripped out of you, but that's standard practic i'm afraid! You are also being very thick skinned which is positive. Just
  11. Aye, a million miles different . . . . . . . Naaaaw, to be honest, the one i've seen a lot recently, has a lot of collie traits. Which isn't that surprising, considering that she is pretty much half collie.
  12. This is going to get REAL good.
  13. With some of the comments on here, it's no wonder there is so much unsolved dog theft etc. I mean, loads of folk, know who steals dogs, but you can't be a grass can you! Same as if i knew someone was selling kids drugs or noncing them up, and did nothing at all, that's still make me a good person yer? Cos i wouldn't be a grass. Give your heads a shake and grow up.
  14. Aye, cos lots of lads round these parts do jackels / wolves with their bull x's
  15. Aye, looks like a jackel or similar. DOgs can kill european wolves, but the north american ones. . . . would be a push. That videos not my cup of tea though . . . . not hunting, just the same as watching dog fighting.
  16. Andy your talking pish...why would you work without a locator..? you are simply too tight to spend money on your partners in the hunt. Its bad advice to give anyone new to the game. buy an old mk1 off fleebay. but dont work without..its foolhardy in my humble opinion. it could be the diff between life and death for a lost ferret. the only problems I've seen with the mk3 is the person on the other end not knowing how to use it. Although i agree with you, i dont think you 'should not' ferret, without one, you just need to be a little smarter and more paient.

  18. The best solution, is to have both. I like to think that i am well versed in the traditional / fieldcraft methods of geting a ferret back etc, and the dog helps no end. However, there are times, when it all goes quiet, and a quick scan of the disco carrot, reveals the ferret only a foot or so down, a couple of mins of easy digging and that he ferret back, multiple rabbits in the bag and me on to the next warren. We had a day in yorkshire last season, where we had about 30 rabbits, and a good few of them were dug, after being pushed to ground by the dogs, easy as pie one foot digs, but
  19. Before i watch it . . . . does it have terrible music?
  20. Pretty sure that site belongs to someone on here.
  21. See it quite a lot. Here's a slightly different instance, we take out a young whippet (2.5) and an old collie/grey, of about 8 yrs. When they first went out togeher, the old collie bitch, would hunt cover hard. In time the whippet has become a really good finding dog, and hunts like a demon, working fast and constantly. The old collie x, also saw this, and being a smart dog, and realising she didnt need to do the work, she now watches him, positioning herself on high ground, or on runs, somewhere she can see the whippet. When he picks up the pace, and his tail starts wagging, she k
