I agree totally matey, and she isn't getting out with the whippet for a good few months yet, and wont see any live game etc, for a good while either. She will be walked / excercised and trained on 'dead ground'. There is no rush, it's a bit of a project, if it doesnt work, then so be it, but i will take it really slow, and put the time in, so fingers crossed.

See. . . . . now im not sure if Minshaw man is real or a joke???

Cheers all. I'm all too aware of the potential problems of using such a hound blooded dog, for the task at hand, and she may well, despite all efforts, end up as a 'hound' who disappears over hill and dale on a line. We shall see, maybe with the ground work, that can be curbed a little, or at least she wil come back when done. Moonlighter, i was initially looking for something with spaniel in, but this litter came a long, and after viewing them, and speaking to the guy who bred them a few times, i just couldnt say no. If she doesnt work out for working smaller places for the runners,

She is 3/4 Beagle, 1/8 Teckle and 1/8 'mixed hound type thing' (from chipper smiths line).

Yes, search and rescue dogs use them all the time.
-
Cheers pal. We will just have to tell your daughter we named the pup after her

It has its good moments, but it can be embaressing in company if folk dont get how its going to go down, and think we can choose where we go and not the dogs. Also it can be unnerving, standing in a wood or forest, no sign of the dog for 10. . . . 15. . . . 20 mins, and you just have to stand and wait, or listen for the crashing. I hope your pup does what you want, im sure it will.

Cheers both. So far she is coming on ok, sitting, coming to call, and retrieving a bit. Follows me well, when out. My old man has this crazy idea that he will be able to train her to where he can shoot over her, and get her dropping on a whistle etc. I have my doubts, but she is a nice little thing to have about, thrown a lot to the Teckle in her attitude and personality.

He's ok mate, he can just be a right little git at times, never had a dog like him, extremely centered around me and loving etc, like my shadow in the house and yard. But as soon as you are out hes full on hunting mode, no pause, no chilling, and never just a walk, extremely independant. It took me a while to figure out it was just him and his way, rather than my massive training failings, or him being disobbediant, and he got a few slaps for it, but now I just leave him to it , and he will dissapear a lot, and reappear, sometimes with a rabbit, and as he has aged, can actually be quite biddab

Cheers foe the kind words Jamie. We really DO need to meet up for a mooch soon, i'm flat out on the shoot at the moment, but soon! You should come over here. R.E the whippet, if its just bushing, get a terrier or something. If its a bit of everything, then probably a small lurcher. If you like whippets, get one. Thats about the sum of it. Mine does me, i can take him ferreting, he will now do a decent enough shift on the lamp, although can be a little git, and hes great for general mooching about. His work ethic is second to none and he makes any walk exciting, and will have a pop

walk up the field with the dogs and the new camera

The pup ikes a nice one mate, and i think you deserve a lot of credit for getting that whippet to where she is, and im sure you will have some fun with her and it will all be worth it. -
I know this is probaby in the wrong section, as she is mostly hound, but as the folk who are interested are in here, and she will (hopefully) be worked a longside and for running dogs, i thought i'd stick this here. Just a few new (and fairly crap) photos of Gwen. All jabbed up now, and at 12 weeks on Sunday, getting out into the big wide world, meeting sheep, chickens, ferrets and generally learning about life. Can't fault her so far.

Nice to see the whippet out and about and looking good mate. And FECK ME, that pup has shot up! -
would you like to par take in a small wager Yep. Now i'm not saying a good cover working lurcher wont beat a pot licker. But the best cover lurcher you can find vs the best spaniel i can find. . . . . I'd definatly whack some money on that. I've had this argument a milion times, but i'm teling you now, a top spaniel will empty cover faster and work it harder than a runner, it's just about the build, and work style etc etc etc.

No doubt there are some sound people out there, but unless I knew someone well or somehow had regular contact I wouldnt risk it. Everyone seems like a nice bloke when you meet them for the first time but unless your a mind reader why take a chance......after all, its no the person that has to suffer its the dog. If you take an animal on at least have the balls to do whats right if needs be rather than do something just to ease your own concience....jmho Maybe that's where we differ mate, i just assume most folk are c**ts, and i dont think most fok seem nice to start. I meant, that

R.E the coat - i've had some bad injurys to my dog, but all of them have been metal based - i.e barbed wire, meta sheeting etc. I know whippets have fairly thin skin in comparison to some breeds, but its not like bramble etc is going to split them open. Although i have noticed that some show type whippets do have skin like paper, whereas mine has skin like a lot of thin coated runners. I think they are cracking dogs for a good mooch about, mines just like a fast little terrier in his hunting attitude.

This thread is great. Instead of the lad taking time to find the right home, just suggest he shoots his dog. That's going to REALLY sort his head right out. I know what is being said but. . . . come on, despite all of the pricks, there are some sound folk out there who would give it a decent home.
-
Just my take on it, but i'd say that, my whippet won't compete with a true cover dog when it comes to bushing out rabbits from cover, but wil compete with any running dog / lurcher at marking cver, pushing stuff out and catching in cover etc. No running dog will equal a terrier / spaniel / hound though.
-
Out of interest, why do you have 60 ferrets / kits? And it will still cry if in a seperate cage, to the others, because its seperated, even though it can see them.
-
A tick puller costs feck all, and is the quickest, easiest and most sure way of removing the tick, with out any problems. For an infestation, use frontline, sprayed on some rubber gloves and then rubbed all over. Other methods might work, but can potentially cause problems, and are a hassle. Members always say - but it's worked for me etc, but it's not something you would suggest to new ferret keepers etc. If you can do something with the right tool, then do it with that tool.
-
Have you not got a mate who would kennel him for a while, until you get sorted? I recenty had a mates dogs here 3 months, and im sure hes glad he didnt get shot of them now.

Stan. . . thank the lord, someone understands what i'm saying lyk. everybody understands ye jai, but i dont uderstand the need to moan aboot it your just becomin a grumpy ole hippy I'm just hoping if i moan enough, the lad will stop? It'd make his life easier, one less word to type in every sentence, and the same message? And yes, the more i get rained on, the more grumpy i become. And i'm not a hippy, i'm an anti. . . . .a very very deep undercover anti. That's right
