  1. After friday mornings ferreting trip not quite working out as planned, i was back out again yesterday. I picked Johnnyboy up early doors, a long with his step daughter, and the two older dogs, and we headed off down the road to check out some permission that we had got the week previously. We knew that there were a good few rabbits on this farm, but guessed that the cover was going to be our biggest problem as its all hedges (mostly) and they had not been flailed. We got to our destination and had a bit of a walk about and saw that our fears were right, there were definatly rabbits in the

  3. Cheers all! Was out again today, getting wet feet again, fereting a stream bank. Did much better, i will write it up later. Need to get some sleep as im lamping in a few hours George - He is a whippet mate.
  4. Obviously a worker, but if i had a choice, a light color, medium size jill.
  5. Well, today i wasn't working until the afternoon, so i decided to have a few hours out in the morning. The plan was to go and check out some land that i had been asked to clear, see what was what and take a few rabbits while i was at it. Got up early and headed off with the dog, found the land and saw this . . . . . So that was the plan fecked . . . . With it being a bit of a drive, i decided to soldier on, and had a mooch, with the dog. It was wet, very wet. Nothing was ferretable, i'd have been better off with a fishing rod! The dog did pick up one mixy bunny, so that w
  6. Yes, but if the ferrets are at seperate points and still, you will just pick up two readings at different points. If that makes sense?
  7. ye i noticed feeding birds builds them up Rabbits have very little fat, birds have lots.
  8. He means run her behind the bike as opposed to free running or walking mate. I was always led to believe that its good for keeping their nails short, and tightening their feet etc up. And would feed after i get back.
  9. Mine get mainly carcasses, with some dry (usually vitalin) in the summer, if the flies are bad. My lot can destroy two rabbits in a day. I feed birds if i want to bulk weight up.
  10. yeah but that defeats the object because you want it ringing when it comes out?? no point if it only rings before you enter it! it dose ring when it come's out we flick it to keep it clear u awkwerd prick Ive seen quite a lot of your posts on here, and if you go around with that attitude all your life, some one is going to knock your teeth down your throat sooner rather than later.
  11. f*****g hell, some idiots on here today. And trust me, that pup of Jb's will see plenty of work on the dazzler, just cos it doesnt get shouted about on here doesnt mean its not going to happen . . . . She will get all the chances to show what she can do in all aspects of hunting
  12. Cheers all! Joycey - I got it off Strong Stuff on here mate, he makes them and they are the best collars i have seen!
  13. That's brilliant mate, she really is a very smart kid, and beautiful with it. You are very lucky to have such wonderful children. Well done Lexy! :toast: I guess this is going to cost me a couple of kinder eggs
  14. I dont feed a lurcher all year just to grab rabbits in a net I must admit to sometimes doubling (or trebling) my ferrets up though! If you think a ferreting dog only grabs rabbits in nets then you dont do much ferreting. Do you find it more satisfying catching the 1 with the dog or the 6 with the nets. for me a love the thrill of the chase hence why I own lurchers. I know exactly what you are saying, but i do enough mooching / ferreting / general hunting to gt a good few runs for the dog, and i get the satisfaction from it all coming together and all six rabbits beiun
  15. Ive done a lot of ferreting and been out with a few folk. Done a lot without collars once upon a time, and just remember having to really be quiet and sneaky, and wait sometimes on the box with a cup of tea, the odd logical dig. Gutted rabbit down the hole, or banging a stick in the hole etc. Or a good dog. But that kind of stuff only works if 1 . Its a small ish warren and 2. The ferret can actually come out. Nowadays i wouldnt ferret without a locator and collar. ferreting big warrens, a long way from home, it gives you the confidence to just get on with it and tackle anything.
  16. Well done lads Good read and looked like a good day out, some really top scenery you guys have up there And a massive well done to little Evie, really pleased for you mate, i like that wee dog a lot Hopefully see you again in the not too distant future, and get some lamping in as well this time
  17. Someone once said something to me a long the lines of - you should always try to go home with a run left in the dog.
  18. it definitely sharpens them up though, don't you think? I'm stood there in amazement half the time when mine is full tilt though the cover, how she doesn't hit trees (touch wood!....no pun intended) is beyond me! Aye, i think you are right. They also learn to work smart and try to pick it up as it bolts so they dont have to run I do worry sometimes. The grandsire to my dog ended up with a branch through his neck . . . . didnt kill him, but kind of ruined his day
  19. Most will give alternative runs, or couple of runs at a time, giving each dog a chance for a breather and probably getting more out of them over all.
  20. Aye, i hunt a lot of woodland, most days. But sometimes you have to close your eyes Probably why my dogs looks somewhat 'used'
  21. I wouldnt rush him, but if he is showing promise and picking them up, at 11 and a half months i would be getting him going with regular work, not to heavy, but regular. Simple fact is, the more they see, especially in the first couple of years (without sickening them) the better they get and will be.
