Foxes can squeeze into some very tight places [bANNED TEXT] the entrance doesnt have to ba an obvious hole a decent sized crack or missing stone in the wall would be enough, the entrance could even be in the top of the wall leading down to the lower levels, nothing would suprise me where foxes are concerned. Just an old pic

-
Did you work on the film Wallis and gromit.

Now days I spend more time trying to catch foxes than any other quarry, but there is a great deal of fun to be had catching rabbits, rabbits generaly dont jump into the nets and generaly they dont roll over for a lurcher. They are a good sporting quarry and will teach you a lot about the countryside, good luck at those rabbits [bANNED TEXT].

Frost is a killer to a good nights lamping
Kane replied to Straightline's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Frosty nights are best to get to bed early, then up at the crack of dawn with either ferrets or terriers. -
Thanks for the reply, must of been over the moon to have her back.

Hope you dont mind me asking, saw your thread in running dog forum and was wondering if the terrier stayed or was stuck or a bit of both.21 hours is a good stay by anybodys standards especialy as it looks as if the dog mixed it aswell.

With some saluki/greyhounds topping the 28inch mark and with the right attitude why not?
-
Very true Baldie they do look the part. The only bloke I know who takes fallow and red regularly uses a mix of collie/bull/greyhound and his dogs are very greyhoundy.Ive met a few who talked about it this bloke actualy does it.
-
Ive had and seen plenty of Deerhound xs run the only ones that were worth feeding were the ones that had something else in the make up ie collie, bedlington or saluki.Mush is right again why feed a lump 30inch attention grabber when a smaller more discreet looking dog will do the job better.

Nice walk out jordan................I saw Royston 2 put a couple of barrels into a cock pheasant once......thing is he never even let it get off the ground.........dirty b*****d.

mush you talk a lot of sense [bANNED TEXT],Deerhound enthusiasts or breeders(closet hancocks ) always put the blame on the owner.I want a dog that starts early has a good strike is game and is vesatile enough to work with terriers during daylight and lamp at night, not a lot to ask but straight Deerhound crosses just arent as good as other crosses.Ive loads of patience but I also know what I expect from a lurcher. The thing that sickens me most is those that lie about a dog/breed/strain more concerned about ££££ than the breed they are suposedly championing.

Had an invite from a member of this site to try a few fox earths on some keepered permission.Apparantly if we didnt do it this weekend they would get some one else in.They didnt mind if a couple of m8s also came along.I rang R2 and asked if he fancied it anyway he made the 130 mile journey with Jordan in tow in the expectation of some good fox control. To say we were dissapointed when we were let down at the last minute would be an understatement .Ratkilla did a good job getting us some lamping permission at short notice and I knew of an earth that was holding so luckily R2 and jordan hadnt ma

The dog was only a youngster in that particular pic so he did have help on a couple yes, just to get him started. Now it is hard to believe the number of deer in some localities, deer realy arent my thing Ill run them in my area simply because they are there. If I walk from my house to do a bit of lamping its remarkable if I DONT see a dozen roe.Sussex,Surrey and Hampshire is generaly over run with them Hertfordshire Wiltshire also seems to be crawling with them.Until you have lamped these area or even bushed them daytime it is hard to believe the numbers of roe and muntjac. Roystan2,Jordan,Rat

Very good cross if the right bloods been used.Very easy to enter very exciting to watch .The only negative is that to lenghen the working life of this type of dog your best p[icking which land to run it on.As they can be quite fragile especialy at the speeds they run at.
-
You said it Hawkeye IMHO there realy are some exceptional dogs around, put them with some one who can tear themselves away from the pub or the armchair every now and again and it realy is a strain on the freezer.Just to let you know what results can be achieved heres a pic of a Bullx and a days sport at Royston2s.Think what might be possable if some people bitched and whinged less and actualy got out with the dogs.Good luck.

You can tell by the replies on here that you will have to get out and see what works for you in your area best .
-
now kane that makes sense just keeping the fox to the side of the beam,im try to blind the little critter.do i have to leave the lamp on continuasely or do i keep knocking it off and then call? For the moment keep the lamp on ,when you and the dog get a bit more experianced you will be able to tell which foxes are acting a bit suspicious and need the lamp off just to reassure them.

Like most things theres deer and then theres deer. Its a lot more difficult for some one to have to drive to run them than if like Royston you have them pretty much on your doorstep.74 would most likely have been easily doubled its just a case of how much trouble you have to go to.Theres a lot of lads I know see muntjac as a pain in the arse not even worth the trouble for dog food. They cant exercise the dogs without catching 1 or 3 hard to believe but if deer isnt your thing then they can be a bit of a liability.Roystons bitch is a very capable dog on the deer and a well bred dog in a quarry ri

Make sure youve got cover behind you to break up your outline,if no cover try crouching down as the fox gets closer aim off with the lamp (dont keep him centre of the beam).Keep quiet as the fox gets close make sure your not fumbling about for anything Like a camera(ask Jordan).
-
Now youve got the century I expect you will be able to relax a little and the numbers will build up very quickly.

Are you dissagreeing with site moderators of smoochers bracken boy? You will get yourself banned LOL The best read on smoochers are the pms if you dont believe me ask the site administrater LOL.

If it wasnt for my terriers I think I would probably go for 1st or 2nd cross Bedlington Greyhound all the ones Ive seen enter easily to rabbit will knock over foxes and are a joy to own 3/4Gryhound/Collies there are a lot of good ones of those about aswell. It realy all depends on how immportant the fox killing aspect is to you.Almost any reasonably bred lurcher will catch rabbits but its not every lurcher(not even ones bred for the job)that will take foxes. As for people not replying to questions at the moment, its January I would hope a lot of them are out there putting meat in the freezer
