  1. Every day's a school day... I was forced into getting my DSC1, as its now pretty much mandatory for foresty rented shooting in Scotland. Did I learn anything? Absolutely Did it help me out stalking? of course! Youre always learning arent you? Setting aside the safety & practical shooting aspects, the food hygene, disease id, gralloching and preparations were all really helpful. Ive shot red & roe for 30+ years, and I found the study and one day course & exam very useful. Only downside is the cost, but you can save cash by staying away from.BASC etc.
  2. I looked into this extensively before deciding which mod to buy for my .243 As always theres pros & cons for each one and as always there's compromises to be considered. My final choice of a T8 mod was based on final recommendation from a gunsmith. Sure the T8 can get corroded inside, but thats down to bad maintenance especially after use. I store it off my rifle, and spray the baffles with oil & rotate it to make sure the oil penetrates the baffles. Sure steel mods make the front end heavy, but if you are looking for the best sound moderation, then the T8 wont dissapoi
  3. Build one for yourself there's plenty of info on what you need to buy & where to buy from. it'll save you a heap of cash. SCRAMBLE I'll also have a look at this option too thanks.
  4. Heres my take on it so far: NS200 is cheapest but the screen may not be easy to use + scrambling about at night could cause damage. Also not sure about illumination from screen Id however like to try one on my Docter scope. Pulsar 550 means a night vision only set-up and possibly better performance particularly with a decent IR. Costs around another £400 mind! Next up is the Archer Starlight which fits on the end of the scope, albeit quite long and requiring a but extension. Weighing in at around £1600, its a lot more expensive but looks like the best performer? Have I missed a
  5. Thanks guys. I should have said I use a Docter 6 -15 x 56 which is awesome optics & up there with the best - for just under a grand. Id imagine itd work fine with a 'bolt on' NV.
  6. Folks, I've started to think about entering the NV world, but have to confess to being quite daunted with the various options. Predominantly for fox control, I'd thought about the Pulsar 550 unit, fitted to a .243, as I do my own reloading, however having read some reports on here, there seems to be a view that the NS200 Nite Site, is a better prospect, without the need to disturb any day set-up. I guess my requirements are; something that will work effectively out to say 200Yds for foxes. Questions: Can the NS200 be ennhanced with a better IR system Realistically can it be u
  7. Depends what you want: Light years (pardon the pun) better than a scope mounted light, but falls short of a NV set-up, although its much better than a Gen 1 NV, and cheaper. Here's a bit more objective look at it. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/page/index.html/_/review/laser-genetics-nd-3x50-review
  8. Having used this now since last winter, I thought I'd update: Only changed the batteries once, and even then, I wasnt sure they needed changed. I've now got it tuned to operate at around 200yds, and use it once we've picked up eyes with a normal lamp. Cant see me ever going lamping without it now. As said before, shame about the mount & cost.
  9. Anyone got some feedback on these HID lamps? http://www.uttings.co.uk/Product/639/109552/lightforce-170-striker-hid-hand-held-lamp-sl170hid/ Linked with a Lithium battery would make a cracking outfit. Helluva price though....
  10. I've ben using one for 3 years, its as good as the day I bought it. As its made from carbon steel, theres a couple of golden rules: Take it off the gun after youve been out and use silicon grease on the thread & barrel where it makes contact. This minimises any marks. Dry it thoroughly (i leave it on radiator) then blast it with Legia sray oil. Job done
  11. Bit more info on the ND3x50 Laser here; http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/198650-laser-genetics-nd3x50-review/page__fromsearch__1
  12. Scott country are marketing a neoprene cover for the battery compartment,,however I've never had any problems with batteries and cold- well so far. Shame about the price though eh?
  13. As Andy F has said, that's the way to go, then neck size after it's been fire formed to your rifle. What about using a factory crimp as well ? Opinions?
  14. Been using mine now since last winter and only changed the batteries once - even then it was still working. Some on here don't like it, but unless you stick a Lightforce on your gun, all these other gun mounted torches don't come near it. It's just not worth 300 bangers tho !
  15. Ps; for any .243 100g reloaders out there; the 'book' states an OAL of 2.710, with a minimum OAL for this bullet as 2.650. I've found the optimum for my rifle is 2.700 - using the trial & error method, and chambering inert trial loads Anyone got other data for a .243?
  16. Its a bit of an art getting this right, and opinions vary, however I found this site that explains it quite well. http://www.larrywillis.com/OAL.html Anyone else got opinions or suggestions? I'm always looking for way to improve this aspect of reloading?
  17. The search function on here is amazing.. Enjoy: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/198650-laser-genetics-nd3x50-review/page__fromsearch__1
  18. How about this for a homemade set-up? Something ive thought about for a while now. Or there's this new stuff on the market for about £20
  19. As HZ has said, they cost a lot of cash, but I have to say they fly very fast and I've found them to be quite accurate. Made by CCI from memory. I bought them to keep in a spare magazine in case i came across some 'heavier' vermin... They do make some mess when they impact. I've still got a few boxes, but over the years, rarely used them.
  20. Sharp practice ! Get in touch with your local citizen advice bureau and trading standards. Also google your rights. Lastly, post the info in every website you can find then send em the link... Then find out where their premises are Nd tell them you'll be paying a personal visit to return the goods! I find that usuLly works.
  21. I think you will find that brand new cases are 'factory sized' so they fit any gun. However, sizing won't do any harm and thereafter, as you have stated, they will be 'fire fitted' to your gun so you will only need to neck size.
  22. Yeah I'm going to go that way. Other thing I noticed with BC pop ups, you simple can't glue them either ! They use some weird plastic ! Never again.
  23. For the second time this year, the front Butler Creek scope cover has broken - just at the hinged section. I've also noticed elsewhere on the net quite a lot of adverse comments against Butler Creek covers. I'm definately not splashing out on another Butler Creek cover, and wonder if anyone has suggestions for an alternative? Seen loads on Fleabay, mostly from China etc. Also seen the Accu cover, which looks better build but they are £20. Objective lens is 56mm, and overall outside diameter is ~ 61mm, on a Docter variable scope. Back pop up is fine.
