Can anyone advise how to get one of these? Is it a special buy? ie a loss leader with only a few per store? ta

seconded Thirded !! I used a Docter 6x42 for a couple of years, but found foxes too small a target once it was over 150yds. Whilst the glass was good on the 6x42, it wasn't as good as my mates 8x56, so I upgraded to the 8x56 lens - and what a difference !! I've now been using a Docter 3-12x56 mag thats also illuminated, and its totally transformed things for me. I can leave it at 12 for long range foxing, and when shooting closer in, then I can zip it down to 3 mag. Added benefit having it illuminated means I never lose the dot when shooting at dusk or at night for foxes.

The Deerquest CD, can be bought from the BDS, BASC & a few other outlets - just do a search. BUT, be warned, it hasnt been updated for a long time, and still has the embedded large game & food hygiene questions - they are in seperate papers now. The only stalking book to use is the BDS one, where the questions have been taken from. My advice would be to work through the questions, and come back on here with any you cant answer - I can probably help, having done the test in Dec 09. All the answers are in the BDS stalking book. You may also find the Deer Comm. Best practice w

I tend to agree with a lot of what you say, however, you devalue your argument by dismissing the test, without knowing anything about it. Unless of course you have nothing else to learn? Like you I've been shooting for more than a couple of decades, but wont blow my own trumpet on experience. Putting the financial aspect and the greed that goes with this test to one side, there could be a positive side to the test, insofar as we are all learning, and if anything, this 'formal competency' may actually weed out the unsavoury elements in the sport. Scotland mate, as the flag says - West of Scotland to be specific, Loch Lomond ish.

Cheers mate - As I understand it, and at the moment, 1 of the stalks must be done by an Accredited Witness, and 2 can be done by Credible witnesses - although its all a bit confusing to be honest. This is a list of the people involved and evidence required - from BASC External Verifiers These people, appointed by DMQ, confirm that each Assessment Centre is operating the qualification properly. That means maintaining the right records, making sure the assessments are carried out fairly and thoroughly and that all Assessors are working to the same standard. Internal Verifiers Are empl

Having done my DSC level 1, my mate and I, intend continuing and doing the level 2. I'm looking for advice on the best way to arrange an AW for the 3 stalks that have to be recorded, or CW for 2 of the stalks. I have my own place, with both Roe & Red, and have access to other shoots as well. I basically don't want to have to pay for the stalks, having my own place, but realise we will need to sort something out financially with the AW. I should also say, I've read up on the requirements, which seem quite straight forward. Could anyone help with advice, experiences, best way t

cheers chaps all advice taken on board I'd have a look at a Docter 3-12x56, with an illuminated reticle. I use this scope for foxes, and it so much easier with the x hair or dot illuminated at night. Like the other poster says, Leupold are ok, but they simply don't have the same quality of glass as the German optic scopes. The reason I got a variable, is, that sometimes I'm shooting at foxes 170yds plus, and at that range, unless you have a decent magnification, the targets too small. Likewise, when in closer - on full mag its just too much ! You should be able to get an the illumi

Did it in one day 0900 until 1600. Did my own research & studying, but it still cost 240 quid - 150 of which went to BASC !

Wanted Pse, Pictures of all 6 types of deer
fireblade_rrw replied to RSWO's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Bit of advice for you - the pictures they use for Level 1, can be VERY confusing ! Pay attention to distinguishing features, rather than just looking at the pictures. -
I don't usually take pictures, but I had a friend out stalking with me today, who took a few pics. This Hind was shot at around 1600ft, after about a 90 minutes stalk.

Totally agree with you, but an appeal in these circumstances is doomed to fail. A Sheriff is unlikely to go against the ACC judgment, which is normally binding. Even then, an appeal will only be considered on a point of law. In other words, if an ACC decides he wants DSC level one for firearms applications, then his word is final. What you will find however, is, the Association of CPO's, usually agree things together - or ACOP guidelines: http://www.acpos.police.uk/ And yes, its a Police state as far as firearms are concerned. As I've said in an original post, I've been shooting de

PS - IMO they are the best scopes on the market...

Hi is the scope new??. If not it sounds like it needs to be renitrogen purged which stops internal fogging. Swarovski will normally do this free & takes them no time to do. The scope is second hand which I bought on ebay from the US. It was a demo model. I have contacted the seller but did'nt really get any where in terms of a refund or replacement. Can you tell me where i could get the scope renitrogen purged and serviced as i plan on keeping it for a few years. I live in London so I could either post it to a dealer although I would prefer to go in person to find out if I have been

what do the numbers stand for on a scope?
fireblade_rrw replied to country-kid's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
here's numbers from my scope: 3-12 x 56 First two numbers are magnification (this ones variable) and the second is the size of the objective lens. This ones 56mm. The bigger the objective lens, the more light it lets in. Typically for low light shooting. Hope this helps -
When you say mandatory for an FAC, I take it you mean for deer stalking, not just generally? They cannot just arbitrarily decide on DSC for everything else! Sorry - its for everything, that is if you apply for a FAC for deer, vermin control etc and are using a large calibre rifle, then they wont issue it unless you have level 1. Cant comment on target shooting, etc. Just passing on what the assessors told me What a load of codswallop the assessor is going to say that so you pass it on to people who are ignorant of the facts lol Its not mandatory to have your DSC1 prior to

When I applied for my FAC, I phoned Pitt Street to ask for the application forms, the person I spoke to there suggested it would be better if I had DSC1 or had proof that I was planning on doing it, at the moment it is not mandatory. When the FLO came round I asked her about DSC1 and she said it makes the application easier to be approved if you have or are doing it. Exactly - some of the above posters cant seem to see the difference between 'mandatory' & 'advisory' - being a member of the GA, means absolutely nothing in relation to this. In simple terms, for those having diffi

Well just passed the level one... How did I find it? Studied on and off for 2 weeks, and sat it with 5 others + a re-sit. 2 failed, and the resit passed it. Shooting bit I found easy, safety easy, scored 100% on written papers, and also got all the deer recognition pics right - although there were a four stinkers (Sika/Fallow does - and weird picture of a Red Stag) Would I recommend it - certainly, because I learned a lot, but I still think its a rip-off ! (£250 in total for one day, and £140 of that went to BASC !) As an aside, both the trainer and independant assessor, in
