  1. Not the best skins to cure or make a mat with - the hairs are 'hollow' and once dried, they simply snap and break off, making a helluva mess.
  2. Thanks to all - got answers to all the questions now ! Just nee to try and swot up on deer recognition now !!
  3. Good points - I dont think naming & shaming idividuals greed, would necessarily help. I personally think that we are all learning - me after 30 years of all sorts of shooting, am still learning, and thus it will always be ! For me the DSC is a dilemma - on one hand I think its a good idea to be able to demonstrate proficiency, but on the other hand, there are always those that will seek to exploit the finances associated with it. What perhaps this site could think about is, a specific forum with some self help and downloadable sheets for folk that are new to this. For example, its quit
  4. I if you stand back and analyse your statements on here, you will perhaps realise that they make you look full of your own self importance, summarily dismissing everyone elses view on the topic. You do yourself no credit at all by being less than objective with your comments - in fact, I'm sure most people reading this will have a less than flattering opinion of you. These forums are for help & and to freely express views, and with that, its usually quite polite to acknowledge other peoples opions - clearly, you seem unable to do that. Lastly, you seem pretty certain that you k
  5. Arent you being a tad economic with your breakdown of figures? I'm actually sitting the DSC next month, and its over one day - ie minimal instruction and the actual assessment, which by all accounts can take as little as 3.5 hours, depending on time on the range. Its still going to cost me and my mates 250 quid each for one day ! Taking 4-6 students, for a one day instruction, which is basic revision based on what you've already covered, or should have, works out at 1500 quid per day, or at worst over 2 days. So how far do you wish to break it down? Range rent? come on, most assessors
  6. I dont have the DSC level 1, but will need to have it by next year less I lose my lease. My take on it is, you can always learn - those that think they know it all, will be the ones that need it most. Having read through the books for it, I was amazed at what I DIDNT know, but equally, there is an awful lot of stuff that isnt really that relevant to your average shooter. I've been stalking for 30 years, and I guess you get into a habitual way of doing things. On the plus side, its a qualification you can wave at insurance companies, and I bet very soon, you wont be allowed to stalk/shoot w
  7. I'd probably advise a wee bit more research on some of the questions you are asking: Legal requirements vary a bit between Scotland & England - .22 & lower calibre are illegal to use on deer anywhere, unless its to dispatch a wounded beast - even then there are conditions. 50g round is minumum for Roe deer & 100g round for all other deer. You also need to consider the muzzle velocity (2,450ft/sec for all species) & muzzle velocity of no less than 1000ftlbs for roe deer & 1750ftlbs for all other species. Bullets should of course be expanding. I'd say a .243 should be a g
  8. Thanks for reply: You need to read the question caefully: D18 A deer has a wound which has become fly blown and infected. This will: a. Make the meat tough b Make the meat more tender C. Possibly contaminate the carcass and render it unfit for human consumption. d Always taint the whole carcass Having researched it a bit more, the correct answer is C - It COULD possibly contaminate the carcass and render it unfit for human consumption. Subtle difference between C & D.
  9. Thanks for answers - 70c wasnt a misprint, just couldnt find superscript to show the degree ie 0c. Was copied straight from MS Word
  10. These are the ones I can help you with.. Cheers mate - hoping some other kind soul will know the others !
  11. I've used a call for years, but over the past 2 years I've been using my mobile phone - MP3, from a CD bought on Ebay. Has all the calls I need, squealing rabbit - few variations, cub calls, vixen etc. Works really well - and best of all its hands free !
  12. Permit me to add my tuppenceworth as a newbie to this site, but with 30 years shooting experience: IMO, scopes fall into probably 3 categories, mostly related to the quality of optics: Best = expensive: Swarovski, S&B, Zeis, Docter Then a large gap to Leupold, Meopta, etc. (Nightforce is the exception, jap optics, quite good, very expensive, but not as good as the German/Austrian stuff) Then you drop down to Bushnell, Hawke, and all the other jap or Chinese optic also rans. Dont be fooled by claims from cheaper manufacturers that theirs is just as good as German opti
  13. Hi again - here are a few questions I'm having diffculty with. These particular questions have possibly have 2 close answers, but there will be a reason for the correct one - obviously I dont know it. Otherwise I've marked my chosen answer in bold as well - thanks in anticipation: D18 A deer has a wound which has become fly blown and infected. This will: a. Make the meat tough b Make the meat more tender C. Possibly contaminate the carcass and render it unfit for human consumption. d Always taint the whole carcass D49 A young deer shot in early spring has diarrhoea. It is in reaso
  14. Hi, am studying up for the level 1 which I sit in a few weeks. Whilst I can answer (well at least I think I can!), most of the questions, there are a few that could catch me out. I've been using the BDS training manual, but cant find the stock answer to some of the questions. Does any kind soul on here know where I could get the answers? PS I've also been using the Deerquest DVD, but some questions/answers arent on it - particularly the food hygene ones.

  16. Thought I'd join and read some of the forums - so this is hello from Scotland. Been shooting for just under 30 years, but nowadays its deer & foxes that interests me. Just about to do my Level 1, so bad habits about to surface !
