Its ok for normal steel shot, if it is less than half choke, but deffo not high performance steel shot, as it does not have the fleur-de-leys symbol, as for 42 gram stuff assuming they are 70mm 2/24" which your gun is chambered for, and not 76mm 3" then check on the box to see the minimum require tons per square inch, or in your case kg then check on the gun, yours appears to say 1,030 kg. 900kg I think been the old standard load, whereas 1200kg was magnum, so your gun appears to fall in between, so you are probably ok, however please dont take my word for it and always consult a gunsmith if i

Rabbit Round Least Affected By Wind
charlie caller replied to let'sshoot's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A .22 hornet would be the best choice, but unless your groups with cheapo ppu ammo you would have to reload for it, I reckon I did mine for around 20p a bang, otherwise get closer. -
Good Shotgun For Starting Out?
charlie caller replied to Dyl003's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Yes a gun that fits you! Buy a Purdey but if it does not fit you will shoot like a tw*t, I dont really get this,"buy a cheap gun to start out with mindset" why go to all the trouble of buying a gun making sure it fits, learning to shoot with it, only to swap it in 12 months later for a more expensive model, that possibly does not suit you as well, if you have a £2000 budget for instance, go and try various guns in your price range and below, if you see something you really like, and it does not fit well, negotiate gun fit into the asking price, I cannot stress enough how important correct gun -
You are mate, trust me you will soon switch him on, then there will be no looking back

Take it back, let them sort it -
With a decent moderator, a .222 will make absolutely no more crack than a hornet, I shot loads of times with my hornet, my mate using his .222 you could not tell them apart noise wise mate, seriously get the .222 it will be the best decision you will ever make old mans calibre lol, well if it is, it is still one of the most accurate cartridges ever made, so while you sit there smoking your pipe, you will be safe in the knowledge that you WILL hit your target

National service in a year or two, soon see how cocky the little t**t is with some 16 stone sarge knocking him around

Indeed it is, and if someone wants the ultimate downrange energy, flat shooting, home office guideline crap, fox rifle then get the .243, you can have your .220 swifts, .22-250s, .204 rugers, etc etc nothing shoots flatter, with more energy, in the home office guideline bracket, fox rifle than a .243, but if you are not bothered about deer, and want to shoot foxes @ 300 yards, and want a .17 calibre, the .17 rem is the daddy, if you want an all round, do everything, flat to 400 yards grizzly bear killer, get a .330 dakota, and so on, the point I am trying to make is there is always something b

Enjoy, the awesome .17 rem.

I Need A Shotgun In My Life!
charlie caller replied to clarkhirstphoto's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Sounds like the application will be going in very soon, and by the way if you think a shotgun is fun,(which they are) wait till you use a big rifle to drop a deer/fox @ 200 yards, I think you might get quite excited then lol -
Well done mate, how refreshing to hear you offer something, instead of all the bloody freeloaders that come on wanting it all for nothing, what do you shoot with mate, air gun, rifle, shotgun? If you want to come for a pigeon shoot, or a nights foxing, I am sure we can sort something out,no work required
-
Totally agree, but its only cheap to feed if you reload for it, or use rather pedestrian ppu factory ammo, assuming your rifle will group with it.
-
Why get a .17 hornet, when a .17 rem is much better, I love the .22 hornet, and I would imagine the .17 hornet is a good little round, but with the superb, blisteringly fast .17 rem available, that does not use a lot more powder, I cant really see the point, @250 yards the .17 rem has a drop of only 3 inches, so it really is just point and shoot at most foxing ranges.
-
Sounds good mate, you will enjoy shooting it are you going to reload?
-
I have an American rifle builder acquaintance, who always says "if god chose a cartridge it would be the .222" get one you wont regret it
-
Hmmmm I think we have touched on this before, that is short, it might be worth trying a faster burning powder like h110, although to be fair those groups aint bad apart from the flier, fliers like that can often be down to a bedding issue, have you considered either doing it yourself, or having it glass bed? But before you do, I would wait until you get your hands on some hornet bullets, mine absolutely loved Sierra 45grain varminter bullets, it could be that it is not too keen on the 40 grain vmax.
-
I dont like the look of those rounds one little bit, and by the look of the targets neither does your rifle, try a group without the moderator and see what its like, targets 2&4 are pretty good groups, were they handloads or factory? the flier could just be you mate, I know I have done it, as we all do from time to time, how long is the barrel, and what powder are you using mate?
-
Hornady gives its .222 superformance ammo in 50 grain vmax as 3395fps and 1242 ftlbs the same in .223 with the 53 grain vmax is 3465fps, and 1413 ftlbs respectively so yes it is a little more powerful, but as I said in the real world that accounts for very little indeed, if you hit a fox @ 250 yards with either of these loads, the result will be the same, a dead fox I have yet to see a .222 shoot a bad group with factory ammo, and with handloads it is capable of tiny groups, I have however seen a .223 spray bullets like a shotgun with factory ammo it obviously did not like, what does this tel

This might sound like a daft question, but you are using.224 bullets, not .223? I could not get the barrel on my hornet warm, what is your cleaning regime mate, because that looks to me a classic case of a freshly cleaned rifle, needing some copper down the barrel before returning to zero? But of course I could be wrong, are you crimping the bullet in place mate? A bit more info might help to get to the bottom of this, and have you tried a group without the moderator(assuming your rifle has one) ? Looking at that grouping 2 and 4 are by far better than your handloads, which should not be the c

Fox Control With A .22
charlie caller replied to Daz Harrison's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A long lane that never has a turn boys -
If you fancy a .17 go for the .17 rem it is the daddy of the .17s will kill foxes` @300 yards no problem, and is an easy round to reload for, and if anyone is in doubt about the accuracy of the .222, well it just happened to have held the world benchrest record for years, it is so easy to reload for and with that long neck, it is very difficult to load a bad round for, the .223 has the edge, just, on velocity, but in the real world, it makes not a jot of difference, power is nothing without accuracy, and the .222 has it in spades, the old scottish roe stalkers that use it call it the hand of
