At the start of the season game dealers were paying £1.00 a brace, one of the shoots I go to they're paying 27 pence a brace (yesterday) and many shoots are getting nothing for them with the game dealers offering to pick them up for free. a guy I know runs a big shoot on the Cotswolds and most of the birds get buried after the shoot if the beaters don't want them, I can remember the days I got a £1.00 a trout, nowadays I give them away, a 1000 birds would cost the estate that lost them much money but the person that took them would earn more working in McDonald's Yeh true you wouldn't

If you put any pictures up try to show them as they were , and as they are , bear in mind that these cold foggy nights are not the best conditions to catch to catch rabbits in

i went for a look an hedge close to Billsden Coplow which is known to fox hunters all over the world , there were not many rabbits there but lots of badgers and as i did,nt want to overfeed them i only put two traps down plus two snares ,the Jubys went into a small very well used set and the snares were set close by one each side of a run through a gateway , i have set at this gateway a lot of times over the years and once i caught one either side. anyway t5his is how it went.

had enough of this place now , got three this morning but the foxes have found me ,time to move on . got a place down the road a bit plenty of rabbits there but its infested with badgers . Imight get out and travel a bit over xmas and try to get a big catch though for me that would be more than one.

Not had much luck this week lost two to foxes and another to a buzzard, yesterday i went to a different place where there was a bit of activity, i set three snares on well used runsin the middle of a small grass field ,the grass was very short and it had been raining all nightand i had set the wires at six and half inches but when i got there this morning two snares had been knocked and the third was untouched, i blifted them all to eight inches and we will see what tomorrow brings.

no rabbits around me [uppingham , oakham , south east leics,] usually i can sell 40/50 a week this season i am struggling for one . I have not seen any dead in the fields and the dog has only had one with mixi ,i know a couple of old boys who catch a lot of rabbits in Norfolk and though they are getting top dollar their bags are well down on previous years but they think it will pick up in the newyear after the shooting ends

micky replied to Shaddy93's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
we have always had roast pheasant properly plucked and hung , this season i have been given that many we had to find something else to do with them . My wife found a recipe for pheasant and chestnut terrine , it was superb , i can reccomend it to any one . -
this fox hunting country mate and its to my advantage to keep a low profile ,if i get a much bother i just move on a bit as i have quite a lot of land ,although there are not many rabbits about this year i can do a bit of shooting as well so i am not stuck for sport

All i had to show from my three snares was the remains of charlies breakfast , still at least you know that you are doing something right even if the result is not the one i wanted

there are few beats showing on the headland so i set a couple of wires the dog got wind of something and took it down the hedge and caught it ,a bit further on she nabbed another 'there are a lot of pheasants on this ground but they are never shot though all the surrounding land is keepered the stables belong to a 60s pop star and if you are caught there they lock you in his shed and let him sing at you thats a brace from last week.
