best shot gun for a beginner?
halamrose replied to rabbit.slayer.no.1's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
'Best' depends on what you want it for. Lets say you will start shooting clays to get the hang of it. A heavey gun will recoil less and a cartridge with a light 23g load likewise. Semiautomatics tend to recoil less I'm told. Decent gun fit and the right 'mount', how you hold the gun, also contirbute the the recoil you feel. Take a lesson or two with the coaches gun, he will have a selection and help you choose one that fits well and sort your mount. Once you have some practice your find you are comfortable with full loads. Enjoy, Halam -
'scuse my ignorance, why would you take a neck shot, I can only guess its the only option if chest is obscured and the backstop for the head is marginal? Halam

You can get a visitors licence to bring your rifle to the UK I expect. Factsheet here: http://www.basc.org.uk/en/utilities/document-summary.cfm/docid/E7955620-E93E-4694-AFD4216B49E693AD H -

Top idea caravan clubs, I do quite well wiht places public can go, car boot site, outdoor center, sailing club, guy who sells straw. You can see they need help before you ask and can start the conversation something like: Looks like those bunnies have fun around here... H

Section 1(2) of Firearms Act 1997 says 30cm is minimum. Not clear to me which end of the chamber that is measured from, anyone have ideas on this? Halam

lanber super sportter barrels
halamrose replied to minka79's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think all they were saying by calling it skeet is it doesn't have much choke any more, and skeet is commonly shot with open chokes. I found this article about going after game with a skeet gun interesting http://www.gameandfishmag.com/hunting/pheasant-hunting/RA_1205_07/index2.html -
WOW Unbelievable Vid., Golden Eagles taking Wolves.
halamrose replied to cookey's topic in General Talk
That's astonishing, the way the eagle grabs the wolfs snout, not the sort of fight I'd like to get into. -
I like mine, my first shotgun so I don't know any better. It's a bit loose on the faces (feel for movement between barrels and stock) but worth the £50 I paid. A lot is made of gun fit, I guess what's most important is that you can comfortably get your eye lined up and you can get in the habit of taking up that position. All other things being equal more weight equals less recoil so it's not always a bad thing. I don't think mine is too heavy. H

Oh heck get a proper PCP if you can, but better the gun you can buy than the one you cant afford which is sat in the shop. If you shot enough to get good you will spend a heap on CO2 I guess. The biggest pain with a CO2 gun I find is you cant measure the remaining gas with a pressure gauge so you have to keep count of the shots or wait till you see them dropping which is too late. Then you have to use up the remaining pressure by cocking/firing a few dozen times. So I think the '78 is what it is and a person can afford to give one a try if they don't want to make the commitment to a PCP

First time I took my 9 year old out he shot 7 or 8 rabbits with the 177 XS78 - only one crawled away (we had a de-brief after that one and it didn't happen again). CO2 guns are criticised because the pressure can drop in cold weather, so you should check your zero on each outing which isn't a bad idea anyway. Mine certainly has the accuracy for a clean head shot every time. Halam

Love the dart board, that will make routine practice a lot of fun. Halam

Push the pin back in with yr pinky if that's what it needs. If not the gun is suffering something different to mine so you either have to act on what you see or make a judgement what to do next. Halam

Just hit that 'choose file' button and your on your way..

When I got mine (a 27) the safety was very sloppy. I took the stock off to have a look and I could see the safety is kind of T shaped. Underneath, sliding up the leg of the T was a coil spring with a washer as a spreader then a pin which goes though the leg of the T holding them in place. On mine the pin was hanging out and pushing it in made all the difference. So take the stock off and look on the underside of the safety and see it it look right. Halam

From the bench rest forum 5 Beau Registered User Join Date Aug 2003 Location SE Kentucky Posts 1,683 The following information is from Mark White's book "The Ultimate Ruger 10/22 Manual and User's Guide" Ruger 77/22; Remington Standard Velocity .22 LR ammunition Barrel Length/ Velocity 28 1095 26 1107 24 1119 22 1129 20 1138 18 1149 16 1157 14 1149 So, based on this, it would seem maximum velocity in a .22 is acheived at 16" with a loss of about 5 fps/inch over the next 12 inches.

storm & ruger 10/22 is it good?
halamrose replied to ngbacon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It's not that the bullet cannot do that range, it can, but usefull accuracy is somewhat erm, limited. The drop will I think be about 8 or 9 feet and every yard the distance estimation is out will move impact by an inch, thats not allowing for wind. As the range increaces so estimaitng distance becomes harder yet drop angle increaces so distance becomes more critical. Maybe someone much better than I can hit a bunny at that range sometimes, but I would not consider it humain to try. Mind you I never have so maybe everything I'm saying is bulletsht. H -

Rimfire magic do do trigger upgrades for 10/22 but not for £12 - thats the kit for cz's -
It will take a while yet, ask him what to expect next. It's sometimes helpful to have a reason why they should hurry up, like an event coming up your involved with. Halam

Some say a semi will be less accurtate because the chamber is looser, headspace less controlled and the action lacks the positive lockup of a bolt. A well tuned 10/22 can be plenty accurate and you can have lots of fun improving them which is a good reason to select that particular semi. A more importent issue for a left hander may be which side the ejection takes place, if you like the empty blowing accross in formnt of your face or not. You will need to do some research to find what the options are on this. Halam

It turnes out you have to buy whatever they have in the shop. At leat the boys and I seem to be able to hit stuff occasionaly. we went to lakenheath clay ground today and had a go at the left to right rabbits. Cheers, Halam
