  1. Word has it that some firearms officers favour HMR because there is less richochets which I never know how to spell. Others belive safety as a facet of the user not the gun.
  2. I haven't bought a rimmy yet but I've more or less got my head round the range. The Synthetic stocks have been criticized as being too week for bipod use - any owners care to comment? The wooden stocks are either 'droopy' for use with open sites or 'straight' which is better with a scope. Of course you can use a scope with a droopy stock but it's considered better to have a solid connection between cheek and stock so a higher stock is better. The droopy stock should line your eye up lower for open sites. The wooden straight stock models are American which has a normal barrel and V
  3. I think he meant 'I dont use it for bunnies'
  4. Whilst each case will be judged on its merrits, these are not as far as I can remember things you will be asked about. So ask yourself for your own concience how you will ensure that they never have access to your guns. Sure they will be locked up most of the time and the locaton of the key kept secret (even from the firearms officers), but you need to leave them out to warm up and dry out somtimes. Go ahead with your application - there is little to loose. Halam
  5. Why would shortening the barrel lead to it blowing up? (there is no answer to this question)
  6. Now I'm really puzzled, granted and exploding shotgun would spoil anyones day but shrtening the barrel is not going to increace the chances of anything going wrong. Your right about the loss of choke of course but for shot range use in the woods theat may be an advantage.
  7. This is an old chestnut. BASC has best cred I think when seeking ground to shoot over. I don't know if I'd do the same again - depends how flush I'm feeling. I always think NOBs has a pucker organisation, whereas one or two of the cheepies seem to be just insurance with little membership substance - does that matter? - you decide but I like the idea of getting advice from those who genuinely know stuff and maybe some other membership benefits as well. My firearms guy recommended BASC and I want him to think I listen to what he says, same goes for one of my shooting mentors. Enjoy Halam
  8. Maybe it would be hasty, but why wouldn't you?
  9. Generally the firearms folk are pretty helpfull so long as its there somewhere you will be OK. Dont forget to put down a moderator as a seperate firearm. Ask for one even if you dont want one, they never refuse as far as I know. H
  10. If it's for woods work and ranges are short you may prefer not having choke anyway, so cut it down yourself. Apart from th 24" minimum, I cant remember if there is an overall length minimum - but I think thats for rifles for which the barrel limit is 12" if I remember right. Found it here: http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/d_to_g/firearms/ search by doing ctrl-f for the word 'lenght' H
  11. You need to put the calibre in and FAC air rifle in type. Worked for me anyway.
  12. It does look good, did you chec accuracy in the new stock before bedding? Halam
  13. If your gun is worth much you may like to get a cheep 24inch one to see if you like it.
  14. I used ceiling paper - like wall paper but plain. Then you can keep the sheets to compare - if the point is comparison then the distance and technique don't matter. Measuring choke is more standardised - but that wasn't the question H
  15. One of my refs is a teaching assistant. No problem. H
  16. Security is your responsibility - the inspection is secondary. My cabinet is off the floor in case of floods, we seem to have a leak of some sort every year or two.
  17. Is it best to bring the scope to fit one or are the measurements enough? H
  18. Oops my mistake of course its .240 not .245 minimum for large deer. You want a 22lr to learn the ropes, they cost kidn of 5p a shot rather than £1 or more for deer calibers.
  19. You can always proof it later when you come to sell, better that than be without the rifle now when you want to use it.
  20. You dont want the cost of running a 270 for bunnies either. 22lr zero at about 60yds for shorter range bunnies and perhaps close fox. Near silent with subsonic ammo and a moderator. Cheepest to run. Start here. 17hmr zero at 100 yds longer range bunnies and closeish fox. Less richochet - never know how to spell that. 22wmr zero at 100 yds (not so sure about that) longer range bunnies and closeish fox Anything bigger will tear bunnies to pieces (check youtube) but more suitable for fox, 270 will kill them but bigger than most people use. 245 legal minimum for large deer. G
  21. I collected my Explosives Licence because I needed it for BIG EARS at Elsworth, http://www.ears.org.uk/index.shtml. My shotty came from the Barn shop - and I've had at least 2 or 3 bunnies with it so it must be good - or maybe thats pure talent...
  22. Chill out, I found it to be more a matter of listening than talking, take an interest and the FEO will be flattered. Do you know the guys at the country store already? If you get the same guy as I do he is a regular there, and keen on BASC as well, but hadn't heard of Will Garfit who is our local Artist, Conservationist and Pigeon harvester - worth reading his books they are full of local interest and shooting lore. PM me if you want to go on an outing some time. Halam
  23. Light gun means more recoil, light loads are the answer. Does he realy need a O/U? He could learn a lot just with a single shot.
  24. Is that lead or steel? And how much of it? H
  25. I had only a slight glitch having mine done at the key cutters by Liverpool Street Station. He commented it was a key for a safe and took a blank off the wall and cut it for me just like any other. Got the wrong size shaft though but quickly put it right, just something to double check before leaving the shop. I think I could get into a 2mm steel gun safe easily enough without the keys, it wouldn't be lockable after though. H
