these people will be able to tell you http://www.clayshootingcompany.com/shooting_on_the_thames.htm

Where do you mean? Offshore, in international waters would be rather different to the mouth of Dover harbor where bylaws are in force. I would be concerned others would take the noise as a distress signal, but I'll have a dig and see if I can find anything in my boating books.

Can we build our own moderators or is that too much red tape? Halam

Relax, listen, if asked where you keep the keys just say 'in a safe place'. -
I suppose you could always borrow one, or go shooting with someone who can bring one along. What did you want a shotgun for in the first place? If your insured I could let you have a go with mine but it's something I have found you need proper lessons to be any good at. PM me if you want to meet up.

can you still get a sgc if you have police caution
halamrose replied to big GJ's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As I remember only people who have had 3yr + jail terms are barred from firearms, so long as you are sensible now. Any violent history will make it harder but if the caution was nto for something violent then it may not be an issue. Also depends how long ago it was In any case you have little to loose by putting in an applicaton, or simply phone them up and discuss the issue. Halam -
Well done, what lamp do you use? I have a GL2 and need a better lamp, better glass or better eyes. Halam

Here is the exact wording from the Highways act, I expect so long as your not sitting on the verge it would be hard to get within 50 feet of the center of a large road, then for it to be an offence a user of the highway must be injured, interrupted or endangered. From http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1980/66 Danger or annoyance to users of highways and streets 161 Penalties for causing certain kinds of danger or annoyance. (1)If a person, without lawful authority or excuse, deposits any thing whatsoever on a highway in consequence of which a user of the highway is injured or en

Some people get really confused by that shooting near the the highway thing - you wont find it in the firearms act, its in the road traffic act. Maybe the guy was confused himself and wanted to spell it out. Is there anything special about the road by your permission? H

22lr standard bullet is 40grains there are some heavier ones but 22LR is about 100ftlb not the 1000+ you need for deer. Opinions differ about it't useful fox range but someone said 40meters recently. You could also look at 22WMR as an alternative to the HMR, 22LR bullet on longer cartridge. Basically your deer rifle is the one for longer range foxes, or should I say your fox rifle is the one for small deer. This is all beyond my experience so I better shut up now but the same set of questions keep on coming up on here... H

halamrose replied to weldersunited's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you ask for it, seems like a reasonable thing to ask for. I'm in Cambridge and the numbers are on the web site along with the postcodes each person looks after, yours don't seem to be quite so helpful. H -
first time out with new rifle
halamrose replied to trigger happy tikka's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I always wondered if bunnies are game but didn't occur to me there would be a legal definition. Not on your list so must simply be vermin. Halam -
Forgot to say, same cabinet for both guns, cheep safe from argos should do it for the ammo. Think about hand loading your own ammo for the center fire, better accuracy at lower cost - but a couple of hundred quid to get set up. Ammo costs per shot could be 22LR 5p 15HMR 20-30p Center fire £1 to £2 H

This sort of questions has been asked a couple of times in the last week or so - look back for the full discussion. Basically using a deer gun on bunnies will blow them to pieces and uneconomical and you may not use a bunny gun on deer. Bunny guns are usually 22lr (cheep, under 100 Yds, typically 75, can be silent) or 17HMR (pricey ammo, longer range) both usable but not ideal for short range fox. For a center fire (CF is generic term covering a range) 22 I know less but suggest you consider 223, hornet gives less than 100ftlb but I think the others are all viable. For all gun

1. No, give him a call to make sure he has received your file I've no experience of the others but talk it over with your Firearms Officer Good luck Halam -
Guntrader have a couple for £195 and £250. Nothing special then. Short barrels, I wander if its the result of some kind of repair, could be the chokes have been cut off. Those chokes by my calculations are both something like Modified, a little more than Half. First time I've worked that out, it was fun. Halam

Like Les said converting a air rifle to FAC often reduces its value because the market is so much smaller but that means they are good value on the second hand market which could make up for FAC fees. While a PCP can shot good groups at 50 yards its dropping quite a bit by then and you need to know the distance accurately to gauge your drop. An FAC air rifle will push the range a bit if you have the skill. H

The "Need to have" FAC query
halamrose replied to easypeasy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
And your permission slip is all the evidence required. My FEO likes you to use their 'Land Authority' form. It may be helpful if the permission slip mentions rifles. I think there needs to be the declared quarry on the land. -
fac licence help please!
halamrose replied to Alex Arrigone's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There are no hard and fast rules, all you can do is get them to have a look at it. -
You need respectable references who will confirm your not hot headed. Nothing more I can add to whats already been said. H

Maybe an FAC air rifle would do the job, I zero mine at 45 Yds which is a usefull increment on the non licence ones. Talk to the Firearms officer they are very often shooters themselves. Halam

Of course you can - but there is no benefit over 22LR when doing so and you have to put up with the noise and expense. Noise levels are always subjective and if your taking only a few shots may not matter but you dont want to draw attention to yourself or scare away what your hunting. The issues of practice is worth a mention, you can afford to get good with a 22LR whereas the additional accuracy at range of an HMR is only of use to those with the skill to use it.
