have my re-brief at Caterick on April 24th will any of you be there. would be good to put a face to some names??

Its been a trying time snow ice windless mornings and fog, none very productive as far as stalking is concerned. Then when things have gone right a run of misses 6 in all 4 different clients in differing scenarios.(all checked for zero and ok) Just one of those things. Anyway the run of bad luck seems to have ebbed and now the deer are playing and the weathers better(ish). Shooting has also finished and the deer seem more settled. Anyway not failed to connect apart from wed night. So had a good week so far and am out tonight and all day tomorrow. 2 misses at the start of the week but a

The fox is always a welcome bonus, but not the tumour, think I would condem it mate. regards john.

Clients are briefed about what and where, but you cannot take everything into account. Some one on my land cannot be expected to know where everything is or every boundry. The film is edited and you can see taken from 2 places, the latter one nearer. Phil had a shot available earlier at one of the 9 deer which were there. But made his feelings known about lack of backstop, so a little encouragement as to when it was safe (due to unseen bales) which i couldn't have explained before the stalk as I had no idea the deer where going to preasent a shot in that area. Cannot be called cheating. I

Like this little gem, Us pro's are still here. -

The law is any .22 C/f .222rem or larger (but not the hornet). the 204 is a 20 calibre therefore illegal.

Again I agree with all the above statments. I have shot deer at long range and after 21 years killing deer am confident to do so. BUT this can never be called stalking you are loosing out on the whole nature of the game.(this is not a dig) You are however putting more venison in the larder if all goes well. If you are not having to reach a cull then surley the point is get closer and enjoy the moment. Keep the long shots (on the whole) for foxes and carrion crows. You are missing the best the sport has to offer.(again not a personal dig at anybody just a general comment for anyone reading th

I would agree with you my long shots were cull animals and just couldn't get nearer I limit clients to 120m's and its usually less than 80m's

Thats a great shot mate and I've taken deer at that distance and more. When everythings in place and right it can be done.(its not a shot for the faint hearted)(or novice). But what would you say your limit is?? Not a dig in anyway mate I'm just curious.

Well went out this morning with Phil (a client) to try and preasent a doe for him to stalk and shoot his last deer for his DSC2. On the way to one peice of ground I went the scenic route to look on a beat field where i have seen many mixed deer (sexes) grazing. Never more then 7 at a time but a different load of deer.(think there is up to 10). Anyway they were there 9 altogether, 4 bucks and 5 does. The wind wasn't bad but the stalk wasn't going to be easy. We had a good hedge to approach them out of sight but nowhere to get through it to take a shot. We would get up there and worry abou

why do deer stalkers charge so much
john robbo replied to wboulter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Just to put things into prespective, most things in shooting have a cost. I had a chap out yesterday and we saw a few does but weren't lucky enough to shoot 1. He paid his outing fee and said that would have been 2 lowland pheasants if he'd scored it would have been 3 or 2 high bird pheasants. Thats not even enough birds to do 1 drive on most shoots never mind a day or morning's shooting + a keepers tip. Get a grip. -
Well I have been looking and thinking which way we will go this coming season. I love good old kale and would have it but we grow alot of rape and it suffers very much from flea beetle(spraying costs to high). I also have looked into kale hybrids. We are at preasant sown up with mainly Chicory which will be into its 3rd year. It was good cover last year but has no feed value and gets barren by mid dec. So I think i'm going to chop and plough half the strips and plant maize and sorgum along side the chicory. And put a kale hybrid + kale blend into the flushing areas. This being early drill

dont know how you cover your costs and make a profit there mate. who are your insurers it must be worth me giving them a bell for a quote. -
Ive been to croatia twice and bummed out both times seriously think most of the place is shot out. Going to bulgaria in december 2 days 14 guns promising seeing 100 pigs a day shoot 25 as a group a day.(no trophy fees)(we can also shoot for extra red hinds and calves wolf bear. foxes and jackals are free. same money as 3 crap days in croatia promising 22 pigs in total. couple of guns left i think. P.m. me for details.

Apart from wages spiraling fuel and vehicle costs just go online and get a quote for public liabilty then mention firearms they will laugh at you. Get 1 to take you seriously then say its not for you only but to have someone to follow you with a loaded gun. Take the quote and weep. On top why should we work and not expect to make some profit after tax. The better we do (for you) the more tax we pay. Its business boys no different to any other. Yes you pay to help with a cull but if we went into the field without you we would shoot far more deer. If you can get it cheap get it but ask yo -
An assesor does not do any witnessing only checks the portfolios and asks the relevent questions, so may well do dozens even 100's per annum.
-
Not sure but it reads to me that they have been/or are employed at some time in a roll of deer management
-
I only charge for the DSC2 witnessing if a beast is grassed.

What a morning fox dropper, I'll have to lie in. Out this morning and we had 3 foxes scrapping client had 3 shots at them not 1 connected. But shit happens.(his gun was "on" ) it was just nerves he's never had foxes running around him like that before. Anyway well done. Didn't get the first shot on film wasn't quick enough. The 2 roe were just over my boundry.

Not seen them in action but many pro's speak highly of them. I use G.S.P.'S Have seen them in action with wild boar abroad but they are teckle and teckle crosses, Also daushund /crosses. Anyway some really nice photos thanks for sharing. regards john.

Well done there mate nows the time to get out the woods should be quieter once the pheasant shooting has finished I'm booked out most days in feb and am looking forward to getting some on the deck.

As from jan 2010 I believe all 3 stalks now have to be witnessed by an A.W. soon to be "approved witness". by june 2010. Get it done now as its going to be dearer and not as easy in regards to getting an A.w. to do 3 deer.
