  1. maybe it is a moan but we have "BEST PRACTICE" and this screams "BAD PRACTICE". its not clever and he could have filled his freezer anyway. all the time he spent waching he could have spent stalking. Our sport is called "deer STALKING" the sports in the name.
  2. Obviously an excellent stalk then Was there no way to get any closer??? The sport is in the stalk yours was a good shot but was there any need?? Did you have to reach a cull quota?? You post bad practice and expect a pat on the back it says nothing to people but IDIOT. I have shot fox and rabbit at silly ranges but a bad shot is a kill on quarry like that. All im saying is if you do it keep quiet theres no skill other than shooting in sniping a deer at 400m's it would have been a great shot weather it was a fag packet, tennis ball or rabbit. But deer need more respect. If your shot had
  3. Earlier today I was asked to explain (in laymans terms) what calibres are and there MAIN uses. So here is my attempt. I am aware they are not all there and neither are all bullet weights this is just a guide for novices and anyone with an interest. So I thought it may have some use here as well. Regards John. With some calibres they are .000 this is point of an inch bore size Metric is 000mm which is easier to understand. Anyway here goes, calibre followed by main target species, followed by bullet weights in grains(COMMON HUNTING WEIGHTS) .17 HMR...... SMALL GAME.17-20GR .22 LR.....
  4. Well done young man. And the best of british luck to you. Keep us all posted.
  5. Having a friend down from Scotland staying local in his caravan for his annual easter break, we were out last night on our annual outing. Dick is a very accomplished shot taking 100's of roe in his career. Well to cut a long story short right on dusk having seen only glimpses of deer we would stalk along the woodland edge to see if anything had emergered. It had a massive buck (the closest thing I've seen to a medal this time was stood broadside at about 140m's we could get closer so we did after a nice stalk we were about 100m's and now the light was going. I readied the stick
  6. shes camera shy though try as i might she will not look at the camera. earlier in the week i mated her parents so watch this space.
  7. Well we have had a great morning both me and client and Mal and client both scoring bucks before 7.30 a.m. Mal has had a few clients out for me and has now drawn blood, Well done mate.(a point of note when we've been out before we have all blanked its not been him doing anything wrong). So anyway pressures off now mate well done. My client and buck. both clients together. Mal and clients and of course Breeze Again mate well done.
  8. looks a nice beast mate shame about the small photo. was it a good stalk ??
  9. great start f.d. there are certinally more moving now the weathers turned.
  10. After a great stalk and seeing a few bucks we came across a friend of mine who because of the lie of the land has beaten me for the whole of last season. Today he was in the right place for a safe shot though another yard or two up the bank he would have been un-safe to shoot as usual. Any way at 140m's of the sticks this chap did a great shot and hit the buck well. With a .308 you can guess the result. Look out for the cock pheasant which must have had the bullet very close. Neither of us saw this till we watched the replay. RESULT. 1 happy chappy.
  11. We saw over 20 on the way in and ive never seen so many bedding scrapes on roe only ground in 20 years.
  12. For sale . A pair of the above 2 year old binos. Its no secret they've been used daily but they have been looked after. They have some very light scuffing to the eye peice lenses and a small scratch on either objective lens (just to the coatings). Non of which impedes the light gathering or the sight picture in any way. I have only changed these because I got some new Zeiss with the water repellent coatings because I am out every day and if I keep on wiping these I will eventually waste them. I am open to very sensible offers but remember the sportsman are now selling these at £1700.
  13. it was. and indeed "best practice"
  14. On new ground this morning and we were targeting any buck as the population can only be described as "heavy". So unless very promising they had to go, the does will have to wait till the back end.
  15. I have seen more deer this year in "beat" fields then ever before. surley some strategically place fodder beat would work. Also of note is we have planted on the shoot 2 years ago alot of chicory game crops and the roe love the stuff. we now have x3 the deer we used to have.. no coincidence they use it in deer lawns.

  20. I'm a A.W. mate and honestly all yo have to do is put all you learnt in 1 into practice. If something goes wrong with the shot think striaght and use best practice do all you can in the right order and you have no worries. All we are is witness's and we just write down what we see and hear. Not out to fail you, just be calm and cool and think things through. You really have no need to be nervous just follow guidelines. good luck and my best wishes john.
