QUOTE...I will take neck shots and occasional head shots. But only in selective circumstances and not as preferred method. What I am saying here is for everybody to give it plenty of thought before they pull the trigger, we can agree on that i'm sure. UNQUOTE. If you read it i'm sure it will read only in certain circumstances, and that iI much prefer chest followed by neck. Head shots are "best practice" to finish an animal off.

Firstly when I said I am in a position to gain that is only from lvl.2. I think lvl.1 or similar should be compulsory then at least some gun handling and understanding of firearms has been digested before entering the field. Then I read your comments and take on board what has been said. This thread wasnt intended to thrash out the rights and wrongs of the system only who had the dsc1+2. My point here is simple only other guides see with the regularity that I do the amount of unsafe and bad practice adopted by stalkers novice or otherwise. You all will have seen some if you take newbies

what you saying W.V. i've just bought x10's and i'm 43. I like a gentle walk for sure but i'm not old LOL

Sorry Martin I cant agree, 1 thing is yes I stand to gain I dont argue with that. BUT only this morning I had a chap out and he said he has shot a few deer but agrees hes still a novice. He said his gun was zeroed 1 inch low at 100m's and that was as near as he could get it as he was down to his last 5 bullets. he only wanted 1 deer so that would be ample. I see these things everyday often from lads who should know better. COMPULSORY testing has my vote all the way.

I would say it has been shot and the bullet hasn't expanded well. This weather it has or not been shot just highlights the dangers of this shot which is why Best practice guides and DMQ will not back these shots. Its time gamedealers excepted a little damage and allowed hunters to follow our guidelines.

At our re-briefing it was made clear to us that canditdates who dont cut it should have the assessment stopped and then the rest of the outing used as training. So make sure you are ready or be prepared to only have parts filled in.
-
hes well coloured up mark. and he was better shot, have a feeling that would have got "blown" when it warmed up.
-
V max the system has changed now ring up basc and ask if you can sit in on a briefing then join the register and your done.
-
We have a good few members here, how many hold 1 or both qualifications or are registered? Think this might be interesting. I have both and am "approved" as a witness now.

As an A.W. I pesonally don't like to see the deer opened right up in the field, save this for the larder. The pluck should be removed through the diaphram and the arse hole pulled through the pelvis. A cut to the belly is all thats required and a cut to bleed and free the wind pipe. the arse can either be removed in the field or tied off and removed in the larder. All this ensures a "field gralloch" and a clean carcass. Saws, axes and anything other than a knife or 2 and a sharpener is all that is required. regards john.

seasons here. http://www.basc.org.uk/en/codes-of-practice/deer-stalking.cfm

Well done F.D. went to my re-brief yesterday for the new "approved witness" status with basc and they said applicants now pursueing dsc2 have to follow "best practice" guide lines and head shots will now again be frowned upon. I am not making a comment here other then anyone now going to do their dsc2 beware you have to have a very good reason to shoot a deer anywhere other then the boiler room or neck. regards john.

Always used 7 or 8 x42's but just bought a pair of Zeiss victory 10x42 fl's and they are unreal clarirty and very light weight. I would stick with low mag if they are cheaper quality optics but these new ones are fantastic. And remember I use my bins every day and evening for work. But more info on what you need them for would be helpful. woodland hill red roe munties day only or twilight + terraian and budget. regards john.

thats a lovely buck and im really jealous ive accounted for 16 bucks this month and never pulled the trigger on any of them.

B.H. No sour grapes here. I do shoot foxes at 400+ if I have to. I also cull 150-200 deer a year with clients and to my own rifle. I could shoot an animal like a deer at 400m's if I had to. All I've said its its against "best practice" and the sport of stalking is just that stalking. Shooting a deer at 400m's is not stalking or is it sporting or ethical. When you have seen wounded deer as I have many of which have been 50m's you suddenly decide 400m's is not cricket. The variables on bullet flight and performance as well as us (the marksman) are to great on an animal which is so large
-
B.H. it really hasn't anything to do with good shooting its when things go wrong and they will eventually. Wounded deer are tenacious and can really cover ground the chance of a follow up shot is minimal at those distances and the chance of a wounded animal increases greatly. Yes I agree people including me regard foxes with less respect (but that aside) they weigh under 20lb and do not carry shot(bullets) as well as a deer weighing 40lb + (reds 100lb+) The point made earlier is this forum is called deer STALKING and MANAGMENT and that deer was not shot under either guise. It was sniped an

when a flash works it always makes the periphial look darker I have many photos taken in reasonable light which because of the flash it looks dark. This topic seems to be turning into a which hunt. You can see how many people regard long shots on deer as cowboy behaviour. Either don't do it (thats best) or dont brag about it. regards john.

they will be taking clover, chickweed or small slugs.
