  1. I covered my bags of potatoes last week because of the warnings of snow.....I had a peep under the covers today and....the first shoots are now above the soil! I think i'll keep them under cover for a wee while yet, just to give them a good start. I'd hate to get caught out by frost or snow.
  2. Speedlamper...........What age are you? Mermaids are FANTASY figures.
  3. Thanks for all the replies, as I say, this is my first time growing spuds. By the way, i'm growing them in bags because thats what came with the seed potatoes and they are handy because my back yard is completely concrete - that's the way i like it - no grass to cut and easy to clean up after the dogs. Iv'e also started some onion, parsnip and tomato seeds, they are in a little greenhouse.
  4. Heavy stuff but i also agree with you. I firmly believe the issue here is about over breeding, and i do blame bad breeders (or puppy peddlers, as they should be known). For these people, materialism comes before a life. Prevention is better than cure. If there wasn’t so many breeders in it for the cash, we wouldn’t have such a large quantity of surplus dogs. Some truths written there. Wilf mentions China...........differentt attitude to dogs there alright! What is the answer?
  5. I saw it on a documentary recently where a rich westerner (maybe American or German) paid maybe £50 000 to shoot an elephant in some African country where elephants occasionally needed to be culled. The hunter got the trophy kill of lifetime. The government got the money. The local tribes, who lived a nomadic lifestyle got to strip the carcase - it showed kids carrying of lumps of trunk, old women with buckets of blood and entrails - nothing was wasted - everyone was a winner..........except maybe for that particular elephant. I thought that documentary came across ok
  6. Right folks............. I am having a go at growing my own potatoes for the first time. They are in compost in black plastic bags - two seed potatoes in each bag as advised by the seed provider. My question is this - do i need to feed/fertilize them? The shoots are not up above the soil yet but should i feed them and at what stage? All advice appreciated.
  7. Only switched on at the bit where Louis was in the hide deciding on whether or not to pull the trigger....it looked like he was aiming at semi-tame animals feeding out of troughs and eating hay? Did i get that bit right? Seemed a little unsporting with not much hunting involved? Anyway...........iv'e seen some of his programmes before, he does seem to be a clever enough fellow...........seems to make peole make themselve look like pricks very easily.............but then again, maybe some people don't need much help.
  8. I love to see a dog do a proper well and be useful, should it be guiding the blind, sniffing out drugs/explosives, finding lost people and ESPECIALLY helping to catch crimials....the scourge of society. Iv'e read that poilce are using the belgian shepherds in Britain now, partly because the breeding of GSDs (show standard breeding) has ruined the physical attributes of many of them and they also have to look to eastern europen countries where they have not been compromised yet. Anyway, after seeing them in action i don't plan to become a criminal.....GO FETCH ROVER!!!!!
  9. If you take away the eggs as they are laid do you put them in an incubator if you want them tho turn into chicks? Is it the heat of the chicken sitting on them that makes the chick grow inside providing they are fertilized? Does it not work if they get cold?

Saw a snippet of her on last night - pink tracksuit, silver puffa jacket, ginger hair, freckles and her mouth going like a hand bell..........classy or what?
  11. I keep my dogs indoors unless i am available to supervise them in the garden - i would not like them to be stolen or tortured by local kids. I live in a built up area, as i'm sure many others on here do, and feel it is my responsibility not to cause noise nuisance to the neighbours, thus the use of electronic collars at night, early in the morning etc.
  12. Bad news lad. At least you took him to the vet as soon as there was a problem and gave him every chance. Good luck in the future.
  13. How old is the dog and how long have you had it? Surely if you like the dog you could give it a chance to gain a bit of physical condition over the summer and worked on a bit of training it might be worth the effort next season? Keep us updated on his progress.
  14. I sometimes look after a dog with a fluffy coat. It is a crossbreed terrier type thing looks like bichon frise x jack russell! I seems to have no wiry top coat, just fluffy curly hair that as soon as it gets wet soaks right through to its skin and it gets very cold and looks pathetic. Its coat is completely different to my terriers, one smooth and one rough. I think it inhertied its weird coat from its mixture of parents and it will never change, it gets trimmed now and again but it is good because it does not shed (it is a housedog). Good luck with getting yours improved - if they are to
  15. I look in on that site regularly- there's often something worth reading on it. What is the solution to this? All those unwanted cats and dogs sitting the pounds, yet people still breeding them... the papers are full of adverts for pedigree dogs costing £400 and 'beautiful kittens - free to good homes'? Any suggestions as to what to do with them? I don't know..........
  16. i agree but if its a terrier you have for digging i would have to disagree. If you shock the dog everytime it barks how can you expect that same dog to bark when is gone to ground I got some of these collars for my terriers recently (they are not digging dogs). Terriers, being terriers (crafty) they soon know what the collars do, they are quiet when wearing them and bark when they are off! They seem to do the job - and lets face it, nobody wants to listen to a dog barking at all hours of the night and day.
  17. Nice healthy looking birds there. Sounds like they have a great natural existence picking round the orchards. Do you have to lock them in at night to keep them safe? You mention that you got the male birds ready for the table - is the male and female birds similar in size and do they taste the same if slaughered at the same age?
  18. Sorry, I don't know how to make a link but if you google wormers.co.uk you should be able to see it. The more you buy, the cheanper it works out. They usually arrive within 24 hours too, good service. Hope this helps.
  19. Sure, I was just giving The Keeper a rough guide to the price, suggesting that Drontal Plus, which i think is a good wormer, is easy enough to get hold of at a reasonable price. I picked up my latest batch on special offer whilst visitin Crufts, where it was on special offer - I bought enough to keep mine free of wriggly things for a right while.
  20. Do you have objections to using worming drugs or just find it inconvenient/expensive going to the vets? I use Drontal Plus, I order it from Wormers.uk costs about £1.50 per tablet. I don't know how much the vet charges per tablet as I always buy it via the internet. Has anyone ever bought it from a vet and how much does it cost per tablet?
  21. Just being seasonal.............look at the packaging on Easter eggs: CARDBOARD BOX PLASTIC AROUND THE EGG TINFOIL AROUND EGG PLASTIC BAG AROUND SWEETS INSIDE EGG Anways...............enjoy your Easter eggs everyone, I certainly will!
  22. I thought they were two great 'Norn Iron' films! Mighty Celt is a real heartbreaker!
  23. Regarding the posts about you getting this dog home very quickly from the rescue centre.....maybe after meeting you at the show, the people who run it saw it as a chance for this dog to get taken on by people who were genuinely interested in taking on such a big 'specialist' type dog. I have been to dog rescue centres where there were loads of big crossbreed type dogs, for them the future looked pretty bleak, obviously not the obvious candidates for rehoming as pets in typical small family houses, where small dogs would probably be easier managed. Good luck - hope you have lots of sport
  24. Good luck for giving him a chance. Obviously (looking at your bitch) you are familiar with handling big dogs - she looks a right bruiser. Hope it all works out.
  25. Was out walking along a stretch of canal during the week. The plastic bags were adorning the bare hedgerows and trees......the ducks and water hens were swimming throught the plastic bottles, beer tins and crisp packets floating on the water...... the dogs were investigating the abandoned sofas and fridges in the ditches..........how picturesque! (and the tow path was covered in dog shit as well). Makes me wonder what a bunch of ill reared dirty bolloxes live aroung the place. The thing that really gets me is that all you have to do around here is phone the council and they will send two
