.22lr ans .17HMR on first FAC?
RicW replied to Leicester hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It shouldn't be the case, but a lot depends on your FEO. There are guys on here who have .22CF on their ticket. That covers owt from .22 Hornet to .220 Swift. I'd say apply for .22lr, HMR, and shove .22CF on top. You never know your luck! And no you don't have to have all the cabinets &tc. On your first ticket you can put all the calibres you think you might need in the future. If you haven't taken them up when you renew you'll lose them, but it should be perfectly acceptable to tell your FEO that you want to be able to decide as you get more land. Whatever, ATB Ric -

I've been looking at this question of the effect of barrel length on accuracy and the more I learn the more puzzled I get. As said above, the charge in a sub-sonic .22lr is consumed within 12". In fact, back in THE GOOD OLD DAYS I had a Walther .22 target pistol with an 8" barrel and that was pretty damn accurate. Anschutz, who know a thing or two about accurate small bores now sell a rifle with a 14" barrel. But . . . the real accuracy freaks are the UKBR22 shooters. They recommend 19.5"/50cm barrel as the optimum. I would guess that in a real-life field rifle 15-16" should be favourite.

Check with Customs & Excise. Their ruling is that no expanding ammunition may be taken outside the UK borders. I suspect that Delta are quoting their own rules. I'm not trying to put you down bro, just would hate for you to have your trip screwed at the last minute. You will have to be met at the airfield by a Customs agent. Best of luck with the 'yotes. Favourite tool for 'em in the States is .17 Rem YIS Ric

You can take your guns with you provided the airline is prepared to accept them in hold baggage. Don't even think about taking ammo with you cos you can't. Frankly, why do you want take them for 6 weeks anyway? Can't you borrow guns whan you get there? It ain't as though you were using an unusual calibre. Whatever, have fun and bring back some stories about VARMINTS. Ric

I can't swear to the truth of this, but apparently there was a by-election recently in Brighton for a seat on the Council. One candidate was a Black, Southern Irish Protestant, one-legged Lesbian single mother with a wall-eye, stutter and severe learning difficulties. The other was a Muslim man. The people of Brighton are a very kind bunch of folk, so naturally they voted for the candidate with the worst disability. I felt sorry for the loser. Poor girl didn't get a single vote. Boom-boom! Two points here, I think. Of course there are loonies, as quoted by SkellyB, who will do almost anything to their offspring. They are generally regarded as mad by the society they live in, and end up in the bin. What increasingly concerns me is that society accepts these murderous lunatics and excuses them because they have religious excuses. Did you see that Cheri Blair just let off a guy who had broken a stranger's jaw "because he was religious"? You can commit ABH if you worship god? Sorry peeps, but I really hate all religions. Ric

Have you read about that good Islamic father in Turkey who decided that his 16 yr old daughter had dishonoured his family by talking to boys? So he buried her alive. She was conscious when her loving dad dumped her in the grave with her hands tied. My liberal instincts are getting very hard pressed. I want that b'staard up against the wall. Ric

A further point here. Why do you want a 32 mag scope with HMR? Better to get a single mag scope that will reach as far as you need, and not waste money on glass you will never use. Go for a good 2nd hand 8 x 56. Ric

complete shooting ban on all feather

Bill Bryson in Notes from a Small Island describes the life of a pigeon living on a railway platform. 1. Walk around aimlessly for a while, pecking at cigarette butts and other inappropriate items. 2. Take fright at someone walking along the platform and fly up to a girder. 3. Have a shit. 4. Repeat Ric -
OK straight stew. The meats a bit fatty, so chop it into 1/2" cubes, slow cook it or use a pressure cooker. Than you just basically throw peas, beans, sliced carrots, and onions at it. Back in the pot to keep on cooking slowly, while you sort out the roast tatties and parsnips. Come to think on it, you might prefer mashed spuds, but whatever turns you on. We are a bit off thread here but I'm drooling down me chin!

OK people. I do tend to quote UK legislation, and forget that youse guys have a system that makes more sense. Now, a mild goat curry, Basmati rice, with raisins and sultanas, mango chutney, Here I go again getting off thread . . .

You Jammy person. I'd suggest changing your budget to spend more on the scope, but don't forget the sticks, the lamp, the caller . . .Whatever, keep us posted! YIS, Ric

I'm not trying to be a smartarse here, but is your FAC conditioned for goats? DEFRA recommend minimum .243, 100gr. for culling feral goats. Ric

Tip's for persuading my mum to let me have a shotgun
RicW replied to apperknowle's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Take a look at the SGC post pinned at the top of this forum. As for convincing your mum . . . Oo-o-oh! Do you know any adults who us shotguns? Have a few days out and they might be happy to tell your mum you know what you are doing. Best bet though is to join a clay club. You will learn safe gun handling, and there will be folk there who field shoot as well, so once you have had a few sessions at the club you should be able to ask around for days in the field. If you do get asked out, offer to pay for the cartridges you fire. The guy will say don't be daft, but it is only polite to offer! -
Blair does indeed have the blood of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, on his hands. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims that is. We are killing Muslims by the thousand in Afghanistan, by the hundred thousand in Iraq, Blair wants to start another war in Iran and people are surprised that Islamic fundamentalists don't like us? Well fu*k my boots. You would think that they would love us to bits. Have any of you guys noticed that Blair is now a Catholic? Did you realise that he is engaged in a Crusade? That, for the information of those too ignorant of history to understand, is the "Christian" v

Interesting point. The favourite barrel length for serious target shooters using subsonic rounds is 19.5 - 20.0" Just for the record, whan a bullet of any calibre drops from super- to sub- sonic the aerodynamics go to hell in a handbag. The bullet is likely to yaw, tumble, keyhole . . . generally throw a wobbler all over the landscape. That is why the long range target guys like long heavy but skinny bullets. They have a high BC and maintain stability much better then the shorter lighter bullets favoured by hunters. Length matters! Ric

Nah. It's the crap 7.5% cider that's never seen an apple that does my head in. Whoops. What a giveaway.

If you believe that they will deport him if he claims he his in danger if he returns and some do gooder lawyer defends him my money would be on them letting him stay like they did the somalian who helped one of the killers of the bradford police woman try and escape justice Poacher - we will have to wait on this one. If he is an "Asylum Seeker" then, yes, he might get away with it - for now. If his official status is "foreign national" then believe you me he is on his way out. And the guys who do the biz of chucking out the blaggers don't mess about. Ric

Firearms: Guidance to the police 2002
RicW replied to JonathanL's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Jon - I have quoted this document lo these many times in the past. The trouble is the fuzz don't read it. It is "advisory" and under our weird legal system your actual local FEO is not obliged to pay a blind bit of attention. The real classic is that according to the Home Office you should NOT be given a variation to use a rimfire for "The purpose of" shooting fox. Yet some people get fox on their .22lr, and others struggle to get .243. I am opposed to centralisation of government but this really is one area where a common approach would be welcome. Dream on.
