cheers mate, i'm toying with the idea of using paddy (bobs 1st cross you bred) on my 3/8beardieborder5/8 greyhound 24 1/2 in and 45lb shes ace in just about every way but lacks a wee bit on flatter running ground, on rough pasture, dunes and the like she's had over 3000 rabbits a natural retriever and touch wood at nearly 4 great feet again your thoughts -

spot on mate, the best. whippet racing is without a doubt the best family sport ever. our hols were based around the championships, camping with the family with friend from all areas around you, everyone looked out for each others kids even feeding them. it didn't matter whether you were poor or rich north or south we were all racers. the worst. i eventually got sickened working and training a dog, feeding it exact amounts, check wieghing dailly, timing walks and some so and so feeding their dog rubbish leaving it lying about all week popped it a pill on race day undoing all my hard work and e -

sorry mate but for out and out speed peds cant come close to these guys, i know the peds have a big following and rightly so in their own right some are cracking little dogs. we used to use peds to give our non ped pups a pass when learning the ropes. i had a 7mnth old non ped / grew that gave a ped racer 20yds start and she'd passed it before she'd ran 50 and we stopped the lure at about 100. something i didn't mention in my earlier post aimed at the lurcher guys, if i was using a non ped stud i'd be looking for one with a strong bitch line, anyone can take anything to a known stud but the cl -

ive read this post with interest and am surprised that even some of my knowledgable buddies havn't picked up on something. at open and championship class level every non ped has more speed than any game we hunt, many races are photo finishes with inches sometimes being the difference between being a champion and remembered forever and only runner up, and ive got both champion trophies and runners up. these dogs are travelling at well over 20yds a second miss the trap, stumble, blink and your out of it. sometimes a cracking dog can be misshandled, not schooled well, conditioned or fed wro -

help with dog runing off when off the lead
birddog replied to woppy's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
shes still young mate, work on obedience, have her favourite treat or toy with you, have you access to an enclosed sports field or similar, practise and patience are the key words, it's maybe a new experience for her and the novelty will wear off -

I've suggested in the past why not have a test similar to this for lurchers? To test basic training and manners with say, a stay, recall, jump a hurdle, retrieve etc? It would make a change from walking round a show ring judging dogs on looks/conformation alone. I think it would be more interesting to watch for lurcher people and the public alike. this is with lurchers in mind to run in conjunction with a traditional show and by including gundogs and the like a lot of whom are owned by farmers and landowners we could also educate those who don't realise how versatile a decent lurc -

yes i agree , more gundogs , i'll see what i can do , nearer the time loads of possibilities here like junior handlers, pets, multiple dummies (so the dog has to mark the earlier thrown ones) pairs, even mixed pairs ie a gundog and a lurcher or a terrier and if people are paying for multiple tries to beat a time the sheckles would roll in. in the states there are working tests for earth dogs involving pipes etc. i'm not saying jump in and do everything for everyone right away but trying to provoke thought and maybe get a few other ideas -
there is greyhound in the make up of dobermans already is that where they get their smooth coats and streamlined shape? i knew of a pure doberman years ago that could catch hares single handed, i'm guessing their intelligence and fire could add a lot to a lurcher maybe lacking in coat a wee bit for my taste but could be handy enough

i think it would be great if some sort of scurry / test could be arranged, wouldn't need a lot of ground, maybe a sit, a 5 second stay and a retrieve over a hurdle against the clock, or whatever, if it could be sussed i'd help run it for sure maybe even get a trophy or a sponsor -

gee thanks, its 1 comment like this that makes judging worthwhile when all others seem to be about moaning, non workers, nepitism etc, your lad and mine are hopefully the decent dugmen of tomorrow and we all should encourage them as much as we can, thanks again but really the pleasure is mine -

theres been a whole lot of stuff ( a polite word for what i'm thinking ) posted about this show thats obviously irrelevant and in a lot of cases negative. The work that went into organising such a cracking venue, the quality of the prizes for the winners, every kid in the child handler class and their charges got a prize, no gate entry fee, only a pound a class entry, nets clothing leads ornaments food stalls etc, the great turnout from all over the north of england and all parts of scotland, the good natured banter and friendly athmosphere have all seemed to go unnoticed. Congratulations de -
just hame long drive, but good day, lots o banter, good to put faces to the names on here, and now that mark has a proper dog (its a wee cracker) to work it'll maybe take the shine off the shoes sorry brogues raking about

how old do u start taking a pup out
birddog replied to fox caller's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
my 7 1/2 mnth old pup lightly made and looking well running and playing has had lots of daytime mooching type walks and been in at the kill with a few bunnies is still way off lamping . for me its as much about the pups retrieve, recall, obedience etc, your not doing anyone any favours taking a pup out and having to chase it round a field cos it wont do what its supposed to. let the pup be a pup, make sure the basics are 100%, good with stock etc and if it takes a month or two longer look on it as a month or two better. its much easier to instill good habits in a pup than it is to cure bad on -
Classifying whippets for racing
birddog replied to AlbertJ's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
read post so far with interest, Ive raced non peds, greyhounds and kept lurchers for a lifetime. when racing in scotland boomed in the early eighties many kc reg dogs raced with non peds and for the most part we all got along, going our seperate ways for championship events. for me the problem isn't with the dogs or owners and the classification thing is easy to sort, make the kc reg event open to registered dogs with papers to prove it, make the un reg / non ped up to a wieght limit say 32 or 35lb and in order to stop the wee fast non peds clearing up at lurcher events put a couple of fences -
clashing, fair enough. cost i agree is a sticky one but if we put on more ie racing, jumping, a working/ retrieving trial thing etc maybe it would become more attractive and cost effective. i have gave prizes in to shows on the day its just this is my local show and id like to see it grow

ive experienced a wee bit of confusion at this show in the past with the way its been terriers one day and lurchers the next or vice versa. why dont they do both on both days? many other two day events manage it. its one of my most local events and while it'll never compete with the big shows we should make it as good as it could be. i've booked a weeks holiday to ensure i get to it so i'm off all week running up to it and would gladly help in any setting up etc. if it was just down to prizes i think i'd scrape up a few from local busuinesses, shops etc. theres also a few non ped racers in the
