part and parcell of lurcherwork mate, unavoidable ditto
-
firstly welcome, my advice is take your time, be sure on what you want then wait on the right pup, many people are kinda anti hancock for whatever reason, i know guys that have been back two or three times for replacements when they retire their dogs, i've lived with mine for 4 yrs and i'd go back. give them a bell they always seem to have time for genuine callers

never read any of his books, i think i've just picked up bits here and there from other guy's who seem to have adapted his methods so really don't have too much experience on it myself. i don't think you have to go as far as the relief from pain bit, i'm guessing that the hard mouth bit could be down to the initial object used in training but it'll have a lot to do with the individual dog as well. i think a 24" lurcher clearing a 5 ft gate with a 7lb hare is impressive also

interesting post, surprised no one has picked up on the way retrieving is trained, my understanding is that there are 2 ways...the fun n games throw fetch type and the more 'forced' way where the dog percieves retrieving as a job to be done on command rather than a game. i would imagine that dogs trained the second way would be less likely to refuse the retrieve

well done guys, our hounds deserve as much loyalty as they show us

also the game you run and type of ground should influence your decision

good points mate and i suppose as breeder seeing the litter daily the odds on picking a racey one would be in your favour
-
Thats a lovely bitch mate. aye she's a topper have you thought about breeding her? if so to what and why?
-
i think it's best to remember that all dogs are a wee bit different and we have to adapt our methods to suit the individual. i have one that retrieves anything anywhere, even at times i think she poses when she has an audience, my other one is great local and at home but in company you'd think she'd never had any training. but great post to keep the grey cells working

well done guys looks like fun was had by all, dogs looked good, and the farmer will be happy (well if he's anything like the farmers i know maybe less grumpy would be better) hows the pup bred? -
well done guys it would be good to see a couple of daylight pics, bird has told me about buster he sounds a good sort, todd too seems to be doing good both should get even better with experience
-
the pup just looks smarter every time i see it, a credit to you and the breeder

my 1st pup in my teens was greyhound collie x greyhound whippet and my 1st dog capable of all game was greyhound collie x greyhound deerhound, like i say i want to listen to every opinion and pick the bones out for myself ta muchly

I spent over 2 years looking for a stud for my bitch, to no avail. I advertised on here and other sites for a stud and when I did find one it was to late. I'd like to think it was down to people wanting to keep there line rather than not being any top dogs out there. Your dog is a good stamp and a nice type and I'd personally look for something along those lines, keep them typey, if it ain't broke. 2 things that spring to mind, i mentioned one on another thread recently....the concentrating of border blood and the risk of hip dysplasia ....the other she is one of ten and her father is

great to see these smashing dogs, opinions please guys, where do you take one if you want to keep the line going? do we go for the same again? or maybe a 1st or 2nd cross collie greyhound and at that do we go border, beardie or a mix? or to join the trendy choice do we go to a deerhound cross? all being well i intend to breed mine next year and have my own thoughts but i want to listen to as many opinions and ideas as poss before i commit.

fact is with the best will in the world most of us have our 9 to 5's (wish i was 15 and still at school) and other priorities, we can't all work as pest controllers or rabbitcatchers. we do it because we like it, our dogs have been bred to do it and we pick a type that suits us whether it's a top class catch dog or not. compared to a working collie, guide dog, police dog or gamekeepers spaniel all lurchers are part timers
-
mine see rabbits dailly, my collie cross had a run of at least 1 bunny a day for 36 days, lamp maybe 3 times a week weather permitting, ferret at least once a week but mines are pets before they are workers and are pets 7 days a week

been a good topic so far with cracking pics, keep em coming. my opinion, hancock breeds dogs for a living but there are worse things a guy could do, when you get a pup from him you know exactly what its bred from, working or not, its not in his longterm interest to cheat anyone or sell them something they don't really want, he's been going a long time and like it or not he knows his stuff, he is what he is guy's his dogs do for the most part what it says on the tin, they're maybe not beginners dogs as they can go through a stubborn patch that puts some folk off but hey imo its their loss if th

theyr'e never gonna match the saluki type lines on the back of a hare, or a strong bull x on teeth, or a non ped crossed with a beddy for ferreting but they really are as close to an allrounder as i've seen in nearly 40yrs of looking

nearly 25 mate, i know what you mean the little sod was for the glue factory a few times, really knew how to wind me up, but you'll see daylight soon
