  1. jazz is by tweedle dum also, whats the name of his greyhound dam? jazz went through that bolshy spell too but it's soon forgotten
  2. he's a braw looking dog hows he bred and how old is he
  3. the decent privately bred ones are snapped up locally by friends and family but, don't be too quick to dismiss hancock he always has some for sale, i know they get a hard press from certain quarters but they are knowledgable and do breed some crackers
  4. he looks in top nick well done, it looks like he has strong feet as does bird's, mines 4yr old and (touch wood) not had any foot troubles and she chases rabbits through local woods daily never mind any lamping or ferreting
  5. he looks good, did he question commands? or have a stubborn streak?
  6. ta muchly she's no bad ferrets jumps even retrieves shot hares
  7. knew someone 25yrs ago that had a doberman bitch that took hares, maybe a long drawn out chase but she took them
  8. as will a 3/4 collie 1/4 greyhound father x a greyhound dam, thats the way mine was bred. she's 4 now and doing fine
  9. kidding aside guys there are 35 users watching this. i'm still in a quandary, my bitch great feet, coat, good size, speed, ace temperament etc. has a half brother who's very similar, both on the fathers side have 3/16 border collie (the brother / potential father has a wee bit more from his mothers side) border collies are known to carry the gene for hip dysplasia. even if they don't show the problem and the gene is recessive and they both get low hip scores when checked. this problem doesn't show up in young dogs. would breeding the two together greatly increase the chance of this problem man
  10. is the gene to spell correctly recessive or dominant over the gene to think before typing?
  11. ive been reading reams of stuff on in, line and crossbreeding when i come back a good educated topic has gone what happened?
  12. jeez theres pages and pages here i'm supposed to be going lamping later
  13. hybrid according to wikipedia....an offspring resulting from cross breeding. heterosis or hybrid vigour.....the improved or increased function of any biological quality in a hybrid offspring............heterosis....is the occurence of superior offspring from mixing the genetic contributions of its parents
  14. it's how strains and even different breeds have evolved, father to daughter and mother to son are i believe even more popular
  15. race horse breeders have bred 2 tightly inbred lines together to get an element of hybrid vigour, i've also heard the same thing happens in greyhounds. a collie comes from years and years if not centuries of breeding one way and a greyhound similarily from years of another way, both dogs, both canines but breed them together.......hybrid vigour
  16. my advice, be patient, if you think your pups ready, wait a wee bit more. your pup will hopefully work for many years i wouldn't want to risk spoiling a young pup for the sake of a month or two good luck
  17. i don't disagree with it totally and it's easy enough to cull when defects are obvious ie obvious deformities, cleft palettes etc but it's a tougher call when the fault isn't immediately recognised like i posted earlier hip problems or any mental abnormalities or quirks. i've had some cracking worker to related worker bred dogs and also some good 1st and 2nd cross ones. my question is does the benefits of concentrating good qualities by in / line breeding outweigh the benefits of hybrid vigour?
  18. well done sir, too many give up on dogs too soon, he looks a cracker i'm sure he'll do you proud for years
  19. goes with the territory i'm afraid, i look on it as a good sign, lurchers are meant to steal one of my bitches at around 5 mth old stole and ate 3 trout totalling maybe 10lb, rch white lightning (hoachi to his pals weighing only 22lb and mentioned in a recent post on greyhound whippets) was left alone with the groceries for maybe 90secs in the car and ate a 4lb frozen chicken, my own nch pure genius ate a loaf of bread in between weighing in and racing
  20. looks a wee cracker and i'm sure with the amount of work your putting in it'll all come good
  21. an old greyhound trainer told me years ago the sex of the father and the colour of the mother or vice versa but they both look smart pups
  22. A tamed haggis?? Lol don't be silly theres no such thing as a tame haggis their all wild
  23. just read this entire topic, some fine entertainment, some great pics of decent looking dogs, a couple of amusing interludes and some amazingly deluded individuals. but bottom line for me, a cracking wee pup from genuine guys that looks to have went to a good working home. atb keep us posted on its progress
  24. spoke to sally hancock the other day about this as a dog i was keeping an eye on with a view to mating one of my bitches in the future was a half brother to her. she said her only concern would be that by concentrating the border collie gene there would be an increased chance of the pups inheriting hip dysplasia and that this problem may not manifest until the pups were older. she also told me that now before they use a stud dog they have their hips tested. i have friends who have done this with terriers quite successfully. similar matings have been used in saluki x strains of coursing dogs wi
