  1. to each their own but the saying 'a year up and a year out' is not too far away imo. my own pup is screaming to do more but at 6mth old she's still a babe, loads of excersise, plenty of play, as much good food as she'll eat and get her obedience spot on and she'll maybe be ready for a 1st. wee ferreting trip maybe oct / nov and even at that she'll be watching more than anything and by the time next year comes round she'll be well grown, fit and strong with a bit of experience, raring to go
  2. it could also be a soft dog, ie one that doesn't like the bunny kicking and scratching on the retrieve and bites harder to stop it hurting, if its that, often experience and lots of catches will see an improvement
  3. the best ferreting dogs ive seen are the ones that get the experience, most crosses if trained and entered properly will work with ferrets but the best are out working and learning regular
  4. for me the sit and stay, steadiness to ferret, retrieving, recall and general obedience have gotta be rock solid before thinking about it. the missus is going to go with me and look after the pup and that lets me get on with ferretting knowing that the pup is not doing stuff she's not supposed to and i will take an older dog that the pup can watch and learn from, if the pup sees her being calm or watching from a few yards away i think the new pup is more likely to develop good habits. the pup is walked dailly around rabbitty areas and is hunting up in the grass and marking well and also listen
  5. some of those name bring back memories easiest way to check them out is the bwra datbase
  6. as promised pics of oor wee (5month old) champ once more thanks to all ps the raffle wine was ace
  7. crackin wee show , great day oot, didn't hear any grumbles, fair judging, good craic, decent prizes, sat nav took us the effin scenic route, we'll be back and hopefully some more eastcoast guys as well, ive got pics of our pup yippee, but i'll need to wait on one of my malingering teenagers to get oota bed to help their auld man post them. thanks again to all for a great day
  8. bob been watching with interest bud, abbey (nch pure genius) did 8.06 at old hall all those years ago. it would be interesting to talk to felix or pat about the times blue ruin and pj were doin cos they were special eh, and remember the three mentioned were not scratch racers they were 32lb. another thing to remember that even with technology moving on we never had guaranteed electric timing. i think the improvement is more of a gradual thing rather than purely to do with amount of greyhound blood, kinda like alan wells couldn't live with usain bolt, its just a natural progression. you know bu
  9. i don't think there is a hard and fast rule, 1 of my bitches is out of an unworked stud and an ex track bitch (yes hancocks) but shes as good a rabbiter as ive had in 40yrs, 1 of the best working terriers ive ever seen came from a rescue centre obviously with an unknown background and these two have one thing in common.........guys that know the game are patient and persistant, they didn't give up and sell on at the first hiccup, mistake or failure. there has to be an element of nature in it but nurture is just as important. ive seen it with allsorts of working dogs lurchers, terriers, gundogs
  10. very good guys. does that mean the red dog is a tumbler?
  11. ive used dummies for years i think it began about 30yr ago out of frustration i had a cracking dog that just never got the idea of sitters, could catch allsorts for fun, he was obedient, great retriever ideal apart from this. half a dozen dummy sessions and a couple retrieving dead rabbits on the lamp and hey presto maybe wouldn't work for everyone or every dog but works for me.
  12. cheers jan and everyone else, she's getting there for sure, still loads of work and no doubt setbacks but thats pups eh, i think mixing it up taking her solo walks and training sessions and taking her with older and wiser jazz is helping loads. watching jazz respond to commands or hand signals, belle i think accepts them as normal canine behaviour easier. wee bit dissapointed only got to see 4 of the litter as they progress maybe the next update in a month or two will get more response
  13. cracking looking pups mate looks like youve done them proud I just hope you sell the rough coated dog before my wife and kids see the pics

  19. thanks for the comments all appreciated , one thing i forgot to mention and remember we got her from a mining village boy can she dig.....in the greenhouse, the veg plot, the flower beds (i was popular that day) and the lawn looks like a bomb site
  20. her dads a 29inch line bred deerhound greyhound and her mums a classy bred track bitch 26 inches and belle was the smallest in the litter. they were on here for ages 3mnth ago check out the breeders dvdski's previous posts
  21. cheers kev, i hope all the others put pics up too it'll be interesting to see if she's still the smallest, you gotta get pics up of jean as well. and get a new phone mate i speak better than i type
  22. just a couple of pics for kevin, jan and anyone else interested. Belle's 5mnth now and progressing well, retrieving with dummies good still very excitable with a real bunny but the fact that she carries it even though not directly back is fine she's still a babe it'll come. sitting to a hand signal, stays ok up to a couple of minutes if your watching not as good if your out of sight. 100% with ferrets sleeps beside them in garden and lets this years kits crawl over her. jumping ace with or without dummy not going over 2ft yet don't want to over do it. stock training slow but no big probs. stil
  23. undoubtable he's really good and by all accounts a gentleman, pals young lad got a casting lesson on the sunday and he was great wi the boy, but if he were second to none he'd still be world champ
  24. a wee bit off subject but all our ferrets have booze related names weve a bud, stella, carly, shandy, bucky (shes a bit nippy and aggressive) and the two were keeping from this years brood are sherry and brandy
