the silence you speak of says only 2 words for me NIGHT SHIFT ! did you not understand my original post ? speaking only of the 3 dogs who have i think 16yrs between them of racing/hunting and only 1 foot injury from that you get good feet. i also said they hunted up well probably indicating decent nose as well as hunting instinct. i also spoke of their retriving to hand another excellent quality for a lurcher. conformation as you can see from recently added pics is excellent throughout these particular lines and to disagree with another user on this subject correct conformation is essential

i generally micro it and dogs love it, mackeral comes a close second but they get sick of cod fairly easily, but a certain collie cross has stolen 3 whole ungutted rainbows must hav been an easy 8lb in them with no ill effects and whilst missus was breading haddock fillets same bitch had a tenners worth of haddock and we got frozen pizza for tea -
making me feel old mate had one a big strong hairy dog, fast and clever with it, used to run him on cathkin braes and eaglesham moor late 70,s. wish i could get my hands on his like these days

what would you say is a good first x for you first lurcher ?
birddog replied to atomo's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
although a huge fan of collie crosses they can be a little problematical for the inexperienced in my opinion best go for a beddy cross or a greyhound whippet both natural hunters and fairly easy to train -
while i agree that dedication and persistance is a must for a collie cross, as they need loads of work. i find myself wondering what everyones definition of 'allrounder' is. has anybody mentioned working cover, beating, retrieving shot game, nets (long and gate)etc etc. i am of course taking it for granted that it can catch game , fur and feather, get around the countryside ie jump over and through and retrieve. my collie cross also is a great house dog, would bite an intruder, is great with kids, carrys the paper back from the shop, fetches the post from the postie and loads of other 'tricks'

ive done it wi a few dogs over the years my current collie cross is one o the best though, twilight / moonlit walks for her have been very productive is it just us the owners that worry too much about injuries maybe oor mutts have more sense than we give them credit for

dont know whether its right or wrong but every dog ive trained like this picks up sitters and runs down the beam. i start with a dummy in the park and lamp on, dog on slip, fetch, dog picks up dummy, lamp off accept dummy loads of praise. once thats solid i progress to dead bunnies 1st one at a time as before then onto 3 or 4 preplaced. by this time my pups often a year old and has had daytime bunnies and held loads of ferreted and netted ones. hope this helps [bANNED TEXT] it works for me

Birddog,I find a lithium 14ah battery and a lightforce lancer just right for rabbits, anything bigger I use a lightforce striker which is a bit bigger lamp for a longer range beam, you'll need to raid your piggy bank as they're not cheap, atb, wirralman if i went for the striker would i be best to upgrade battery to 22amp

just enough breeze for a quick shine tonight and my ancient gear has i think succumbed to years of use / missuse. what do all the trendy young guys use, any reviews, whats best the choice is huge
-
gotta agree wi codie every dog, every terrain and every bunny all different. slipping on everything, how many misses before the dog gets sick of it and doesn't try? esecially wi a youngster even if they see it in the distance going away from them it'll make them all the keener for the bunny you see thats right for you remember the dog has the legs and the mouth its the handler that has the brain
-
short answer : plenty of patience, go back to basics treat him like a pup again, get him ball orientated in the park it'll help reinforce the sit, stay and fetch commands, if hes picking the dummy / rabbit up but not coming straight in try the old alleyway trick where he cant go anywhere else and remember hes an individual he'll maybe respond to things other than what training manuals say try and out think him and don't overdo it or let him get bored again your the boss stop when he's still keen. hope this helps

Hi mate, you can't really convert lumens & candlepower as they are a mesurement of two different things. Lumens is the mesurement of total light output. Candlepower is the mesurement of light on a given spot at a given distance,if you see what i mean. Some of the LED gun lights can be very good.Ive been using an LED torch for About two years which will give about 400m range with a tight spot. The problem with them is,most of the LED's are a very blue light which is no good in the feild.Really hard to make things out.You need one with a warm tint/colour temp.Which is why i picked the one

cant believe no one has said and im cringing already but i think the idea is SPOT on.................sorry
-
sorry to diverse guys, i saw an led gun lamp with an advertised range of 300m advertised and wondered if theyd be any good for our lamping and is there any way of converting or comparing lumen with candlepower ta muchly

in my experience pups have got to be pups, let them grow up in their own time, the lessons they learn will stick better, their experiences good and bad are what makes them, a big heavy made dog can be 2yr old before its physically and mentally mature, a lighter made dog finds its feet and confidence often well under a yr old, how many tales have we all heard about a useless jibber retired to be a family pet that gets a second chance at even 3 or 4 yr old and becomes useful? patience young grasshopper and when things still dont go quite right even more patience

marvellous, and youd only ask him politely to leave your house or garden if he was there uninvited doing something illegal and as long long as he was polite and left youd be fine
