One of the OPVs sent is Tamar with her new paint job. Looks great imo.

It's a good reminder of the instability of the world still though and how important it is for us to retain our military capability as an independent nation.

I'd suggest turning the leccy off is nonsense and sending an OPV to keep the peace in response to the planned trawler protest is about proportional. If Bozza wanted to really send a message then some targetted marine boardings of troublesome boats would be about as far as justifiable. This will be considerably less threatening than what happened with Iran last year and we didn't go to war with them. The diplomats will deal with it behind the scenes.

I agree, like I said it's due to years of budget cuts leading to prioritising weapons for the wars in the desert. There are several instances of such but all are being fixed gradually. Using the Falklands as a relevant case study I'd agree with the threat that Exocet type weapons represent but I'd point out that Conqueror essentially neutralised the Argentine navy on it's own early doors. I'm not sure if the Sea Harriers had their own anti ship missiles at that point (I know the attack helicopters did) but they would likely have not been significant in the outcome due to Conqueror's actio

In the event that an enemy warship came at the carrier strike group with intent then the fast jets would not likely be used to strike the ship, no. They don't have a suitable standoff weapon to keep things half safe for the pilots. The Lightenings flying combat air patrol would instead likely aid in the targeting role with their pretty f***ing immense situational awareness. Taking out the enemy warship would be left to either frigates firing anti ship missiles, maritime attack helicopters firing a choice of anti ship missiles or lightweight torpedos or the nuclear sub firing heavyweight torped

I dunno about the quiet but escorting them is standard NATO stuff. They’ll be keeping an eye on our two escorts when they pop in to the Black Sea later in the year. One of the reasons I say our military aren’t very concerned about a proper war with Russia is our total lack of a naval strike missile. None of our fast jets have the weapons to seriously strike enemy ships believe it or not. They’d be reduced to using free fall bombs in suicidal runs.

The British military doesn't seem to be concerned about a war with Russia but instead are focused on below the threshold attacks, or grey zone attacks. Attacks that can't justify a military strike in retaliation but still hurt us economically or diplomatically. Stuff like cyber attacks and subtle infrastructure attacks. Which is why budgets have funded increased cyber warfare and a dedicated ship for detecting subs f***ing about with seabed cables. The other concern they seem to have is proxy wars. Again, grey area shit. That's part of the reason behind the doctrinal shift towards being '

Of course, but you can have all the best trained boots you want if you don't possess other enablers then they will be systematically wiped out or left out of the fight. An entire regiment of paras sat twiddling their thumbs at Brize Norton aren't worth shite compared to a battalion loaded in chinooks and flanked by apaches 15 minutes from the enemy. Reducing warfare to numbers misses the point. In '82 the Task Force harriers faced on paper superior jets in superior numbers.... They should have been rinsed by the laws of numbers. But they weren't, because rather than focus on numbers, pro

Well this might be a touch of silver lining for you. Blair the Brexit hater commissioned these carriers and now BoJo is getting every ounce he can out of them for his 'Global Britain' Brexit spin.

Off the back of that 'militia' comment. It can make for an interesting tangential discussion and I knew it would get brought up, what with the Navy get a boost at the same time that the Army are having a headcount reduction. As I've said before, I'm not even sure the Army are getting a real headcount reduction because they are already undermanned to my understanding (of course not good in itself). What is counted as the target strength now isn't being fulfilled, I think. That aside with a finite budget (one that has been boosted rather than cut fyi) hard decisions need to be made. Traditi

Right, I get ya. Well this comes down to what we as a nation want to be able to do militarily. Most say something like "defend our borders" which is so lacking in detail I can't deal with it. So what do we want to be able to do? Carrier strike is the foundation of true expeditionary capability. Without it we are dependant on allies that have it or conveniently placed ground bases, which can't be guaranteed and which we have to safely get to. What it offers is the ability to deploy serious force anywhere on the planet. And that could take any form up to the very few situations you have hig

Not sure I understand? If I do understand and you're just saying it's a white elephant again then no it's not.

I'd also add that a lot of countries have looked at the QEC project and have been impressed with the technically advanced end result and the price it was all done for. The yanks are currently reviewing their carrier fleet and are interested in running a dual fleet of QEC size/type carriers along with a reduced fleet of nuclear super carrier. This tour will have an element of 'sales' to it to all nations that are looking at their future carrier strike options. Off the back of the successful Global Combat Ship project it's not an aspect that should just be dismissed.

Are you on about the Atlas that is to replace the Hercs? I don't think that is a petrol fund issue, it's a certification issue. Either way, neither of those fly from carriers. The carrier air wing has plenty of fuel. Not to mention realistically 16thAA are an air assault brigade these days, combat jumps seem to be little more than keeping up tradition for a capability that just doesn't get used. Completely disagree with this. These carriers are undoubtedly huge diplomatic tools but they are fundamentally tools of war. No one wants to hear me explain the detail of that but claiming they

How did 617 land on the ship yesterday then? Glide there? LOL

Cheers. Yeah, I’ve been following the build up to this very closely. I could go on about what all the potential problems are and what else we need but frankly it’s hard not to be somewhat satisfied with the direction of UK defence. Part of the package... The class is only lightly armed and nothing in the strike group has the capability of launching ballistic missiles. Frankly ballistic missile defence is a greater concern than being able to launch our own. Nonetheless we are sending a world class carrier strike group on a six month tour to the other side of the planet and frankly there’s only one other nation on earth capable of doing that unilaterally. Although on this deployment and most other there will be allied assets supporting us we retain the capability for a fully sovereign strike group. For the first time in decades it look

Yep, so far I'm particularly impressed with the burgers it makes. Nothing but minced trimming and they really are top notch. -

My main quarry has always been roe, with regular opportunities at fallow and the very occasional muntjac. The Sika have always alluded me. Well, until lockdown lifted and I was able to get away for a few days stalking, which I was f***ing gagging for tbh. I was doing alright on the roe bucks at this point and wasn't feeling much pressure, evening was setting in and the deer were starting to move again. I parked up on the top of the chalky downlands to fire up the jetboil and glass about where about a mile and half away I spotted 'something' motionless in the grass... Couldn't really tell

Same way but I don't know shit. The stuff is too pricey to risk it not adhering well. Last thing ya want is a f***ing great sheet or rubber peeling off the wall after a few months. Mind, that still could happen, I'm not a decorator and the brickies cleaned out my funds to be able to pay for one -

I'll stick photos up when done mate. Pretty proud of my garden though too, so you might have to suffer my raspberries and roses! -

I got 4m2 out of the first thinned coat and then 2.5m2 from the rest of the 2.5lt tin. So being generous that's 2.6m2 per litre coverage! The manufacturer quoted approximately 8m2 per litre... It's not fully gone off yet but it does feel good. I've got another 5lt coming to finish this pen and do the other. I expect the coverage quote is for smooth concrete whereas the blocks are much more grainy and porous than a concrete slab or render or whatever.
