  1. Thinned the first coat to eighty percent with xylene, yeah. Got another 5lt tin being delivered. Might go three coats.
  2. The blocks are taking three times as much of that chlorinated rubber as the manufacturer quotes for coverage. I hope it lasts Jigsaw! Smartens them up heaps though. And as Gnipper suggested, I'm going to render the outside and probably give it a sandstone paint.
  3. Strictly speaking the army is undermanned as is, cutting to 72000 is barely a reduction in that sense. We've somewhat taken a step away from having the capability to sustain wars and are now seem to be in the hit and run game, albeit with a global reach. In the absence of a 3% defence budget, which the public have no appetite for, I'm not sure what else could be have been done. I'd probably have got rid of tanks entirely to fund other stuff. The threats have changed significantly and this defence review has been bold in changing the forces to meet them. The army have undoubtedly
  4. Also pretty sure a couple of USAF Eagles flew over yesterday. I was late seeing them but 90% sure they had twin tail fins. Might’ve been lightenings but doubt it tbh. I remember years ago seeing Eagles mock dogfighting around Lincs.
  5. They might have been going there tbh, dunno. Funnily enough I’ve driven past there the past three days. I’ve since found out who it was. Just a local lad putting on a show for family.
  6. I don't really do these apps but if you look now, over Yorkshire/North sea, you'll see five falcon 20 doing mock attacks for a pair of Hawks to practice intercepts.
  7. The plan originally was to render the exterior but tbh in the end I just didn't care to. I agree it'd look nicer though. Tbh its out the way and gets very little weather.
  8. The most notorious plane in the CAS/ground attack role. And they were thinking of retiring them for the F-35.....
  9. They still have the C130 gun ships for close air support. I think they have seen a lot of use in Afghanistan due to their long loiter times. Maybe someone with experience can comment? I think that was one of the criticisms of the harriers in that role, they only had something like 20 minutes of actual time above the battlefield before they were running low of fuel.
  10. Yeah the heights. Oh f**k of course, I remember now, yeah I saw one on the pad there when I drove past. You can see them close from the road right? I was genuinely more geeked out by the RN and RFA ships I forgot about it. Ha
  11. Another cold war work horse. Along with the Vulcan and harrier. Fortunate to have seen those ripping over my home back in lincs.
  12. Unmistakeable, especially how it seems to come and go and you have that moment of "Is it?". Out of interest mate, were they british or irish Chinooks?
  13. Dunno mate. I've only been a few times. First time I ever went I was attwnding a course 'sonar and underwater acoustics' at the hotel. Was pretty much entry level course to sonar physics for the defence industry. I genuinely love the south coast.
  14. Get it done mate. The RN is having a bit of a revival at the moment. That's where most of my interest lies tbh. Naval and amphibious. There was a documentary on recently where a journo was allowed on a vanguard boat for a patrol. First time ever it's been allowed. I never watch live tv but made the effort for that.
  15. Yeah fair one. This was just totally out of the blue. I mean I've seen it all before, them going about their business. But this was just a bit special, I'm out in the middle of the countryside, no where near an airfield or base or anything military and he does two loops over my head and then sets it down in a field so one of them could drop the tail and go and have a natter with some civis. 15 minutes later and they're off. LOL
  16. Yeah, theyre mean bits of kit. Do they still hold the world helo speed record? I pass yeovilton quite regularly and see them but very rarely see them up here. Same with the merlins. Before this lockdown I was on Portland and got my first sight of one of our destroyers, along with some RFA ships I was less bothered by. That was cool. One day I'll make an effort to go see the carriers.
  17. They were certainly game changing in warfare. The Falklands war really highlighted the importance of the Chinook.
  18. Over the years I've seen everything we have up close having lived in Lincolnshire. Tornadoes were always my favourite. But this was a bit special.
  19. They all be yank ones though right? There's a fair bit of desire to buy some for the UK forces but they cost a fortune to do the same job as a Chinook. I'm sure I'd f***ing hate being in one too. I need to see the horizon.
  20. This is my favourite. Similarly In another life...
  21. Those pics are straight off my iPhone and the only ones zoomed are of him landing. That should give you an idea of how close it was! Anyway, reminded me of a time we were walking to the last drive one equally beautiful afternoon and two AAC apaches came straight over and I managed to catch them too.
  22. You might have noticed I’m a bit of a nerd. So walking the dogs this glorious afternoon when this happened I was pretty well made up. My attention was drawn by the sound to the chinook coming straight at me from over the wolds. He then banked hard straight over my head. I thought he was showing off but then he did another loop. Straight over me again. At this point I really thought he was showing off and then he set it down in the next field to meet a small group of civilians gathered. Absolutely awesome little private show from th
  23. Just exposed block. That's part of the reason I want to paint it, for weatherproofing. Noted, cheers.
