Shooting one giraffe caused hell.......... Never mind having to shoot an entire herd of them!

Do we need all the farm animals we do and do we need dogs? LOL Just because something is domesticated doesn't make it happy in our society. There's a lot more thought and intelligence goes into the husbandry of many zoo animals than a lot of 'domesticated' dogs in this country. I like seeing my dogs hunt....... I like eating meat everyday........ and many like seeing lions at the zoo...... As long as the welfare of all stock involved is kept to a high standard I really can't see a problem and personally would consider myself a hypicrit if I did. But that's just my view, I'm not about t

Paulus, I couldn't comment on the health of Zoo animals, so I won't. But I see no difference, we don't need dogs but breed them and cull them out of desire, same with many species. But like I said, should we farm to the scale we do purely because we desire a high% meat diet? Is that any more ethical than Zoos? IMO it's exactly the same. And don't make out that dogs live a 'natural' life in human hands! A small percentage do but most never know anything about hunting or their instincts, less so than most zoo animals. Should we ban dog ownership for that reason?
-
But what's wrong with that Paulus? Why do we keep dogs for hunting? Our pleasure and nothing more. Why do we breed and slaughter so many meat animals each year? Because we enjoy a diet that has far more meat in it than we need to live healthily. These are all choices we make through desire and certainly not need. No different to Zoos, people want to see animals in the flesh they would otherwise have to travel thousands of miles to see. We don't need to, just like we don't need to keep dogs for sporting purposes or need to slaughter so many meat animals for our preferred diet.

I found this interesting; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/10626565/TaxPayers-Alliance-warns-of-120billion-government-waste.html Britain’s £111 billion budget deficit could be eliminated if the Government curbed “excessive” pay for GPs, stopped “waste” in the NHS and cut spending on “unnecessary” projects, according to an analysis to be published this week.

Couple of million male chickens and thousands of male dairy cows which are surplus to requirements get killed every year and all, what about them? Guess they don't count because that don't make for good headlines in the media.. what a ludicrious comparisan there animals in the meat trade ffs lol And that's an animal in the Zoo trade....... Still stock management..... right?
-
I guess it depends how they judged the animals genetic worth? That may have been possible at birth, it may not. Maybe it was considered valuable while a juvanile as an attraction. As an adult it had no value. I'm just speculating.
-
yes cause giraffe anatomy is helpful in everyday life them lions would of been well fed reguardless of the giraffe being killed or not!!! just a waste of a young healthy animal imo Oh well in that case then what's the point in teaching biology at all? It was educational, like going to the zoo in the first place................ is that hard for you to figure out? Yeah of course the lions would have been fed........... something has to be shot though doesn't it?
-
Why though? It had no significance to a breeding programme or as a park attraction and would only have been transfered because "it's sad to shoot it". Something has to be shot to feed the lions and the opportunity was taken to educate school children on Giraffe anatomy and a rare opportunity to see lions feed on a natural prey. IMO culling it sent out a good dose of reality and was a great experience to give the kids of the real world.
-
Like the zoo said though Tomo, the animal was genetically inferior and the resource would be better saved for one that is of superior quality. Yeah there was money offered to save it and petitions etc but that'd just be bending to sentiment and imo send the wrong message to the public.
-
What's all the fuss about? It was a cull animal and shock horror got culled..... There was a que of bleeding heart Disney-ites crying to save it and even money offered for it's life and the Zoo did the sensible thing and shot it for lion feed and education for school kids. They didn't bow to this 21stC soft attitude where we seem to think nothing dies and every animal is equal and has equal rights to life in nature. A good lesson for the kids IMO.

I've got some Meindl Dovre Extremes I'm thinking of selling. Only ever sold F2F. Is it standard to want money before posting the goods or what? What little experience I have on here in the classifieds has been good. No bother at all.

I'd like to hear the real effects of cutting aid, not the official line, the real 'behind closed doors' reasons. If it's not economical then I'd cut it to a level it is. The amount needs capping at the very least rather than having it as a % of our GDP. Even with our improving economy we really can't justify increasing aid proportionally and are just making a rod for our own backs.
