Apparently embassy's are not territory of the occupying nation but remain the sovereign property of the host state. However the host state does require permission from the occupying nation to enter under agreed international law. This is really neither here nor there though is it chaps?

Do you seriously believe the UK and US should completely pull out of the middle east? The strait of Hormuz closes and in 3 months this country stops dead.... Anti Piracy operations end in the Indian ocean and the threat to world shipping goes which way? I've said we have made foreign policy errors, but our military presence in the middle eastern region is absolutely essential to our lives in the UK. That's their right as the Worlds most dominant power. It's brought relitive peace to the world as historically happens whenever a single power becomes so dominant all others haven't a chance. More Britons died on a single beach on D-day than in the entire Afghan conflict and we seem to think times are violent these days (that's just a general observation, not a comment to you wilf). In principle I agree with that, but in reality I think things are not that simple. To me a military is there to protect a nations interests from threats, not just the borders. If a country has a dependance on something and a foreign nation threatens that then that's as good to me as threatening invasion. The west and middle east have a symbiotic relationship unfortunately....

Not at all, but if Sweden was of strategic importance and the British empire and Russian empire knew that, then yeah I would invade and occupy. It may have increased the danger compared to staying out completely but it's also kept the oil flowing....

I'm not saying that the approach of spreading 'democracy and freedom' is the right way Wilf. I'm just saying that the middle east of of strategic importance to the west so there is going to be interference, we wont just pretend it doesn't exist and leave them to it. Paying the man with the biggest stick proved unreliable so tactically things diversified and other methods were used in addition. Like I said, we made plenty of mistakes and we will continue to as long as there's oil in the sand.

I think mistakes are always going to be made with foreign policy. No doubt Britain and the US has made mistakes. But the Middle East remains of huge strategic importance to both of us and as long as that is the case it will remain a significant part of our foreign policies. I'm okay with that, but then I'm British by birth, blood and essence. This life/world is all about competition, you either play hard or get beat, historically Britain has played hard. What I'm trying to say is that yes there has been a lot of manipulation of the middle east by Britain but not untill it's strategic importanc

DB, I agree with you on the radicalisation point but not on why do we target radicalised Muslims as a priority. Military trained Jews aren't threatening to bomb UK tube stations and shopping centers. The security services single out threats and prioritise accordingly. You can't believe a ex Bulgarian regular living in the UK is of the same threat as a Radicalised muslim boy coming home from Syria? Their ability to kill might be the same but the idiology driving their intentions is very different.

Just to point out, his Court Martial wasn't over the Geneva Convention. Despite the fact he believed he had broken it, he hadn't and the prosecution did not use it. I believe he was tried simply for murder under British law, which in itself is f***ing farcical! As desert has said, he was doing a dirty job in a dirty environment.

If we're to believe the media, half of the SAS and SBS are already over there. But they're only there to train and as forward air controllers. The bombing campaign in support of the local forces has only just begun, lets see what can be achieved with that. What the f**k are western reporters doing over there anyway? That's completely different, the separatists of these places can't leave without the agreement of their unionist neighbours. You can! Separatist/unionist divisions are inconveniently purely political and not geographical despite the separatists wanting a geographical divide. Furthermore, the vast majority of UK separatists still consider themselves my brothers. The ones that don't I hold equal contempt for. I have no problem at all with your choice of religion or skin colour, I'm rather liberal like that. But I do have a problem with your 'you (UK) & us (Iran)' attitude.
