It's to do with the assembly process The hook and the bend which engages the hook wire are preformed (that loop is now stainless) and the holes have been made bigger to allow them to pass through prior to joining them together and squeezing them up Again, I think that's something to do with the assembly process. If those springs are pulled tightly down over the barrel they effectively give a gap between the catching loops when in the unset position If you look closely at a modern trap, the springs sit level rather than parallel with the barrel. You've hit the nail on the hea

Is that dibber of yours pointed,at the end ? you can still use them, like that,...but i prefer a "bullet" ,on the end,....lol

Never used a probe, with such a 'long tip' ?,....interesting,....

I'm absolutely certain they wouldn't Are you seriously suggesting they shouldn't make a better trap just in case householders get hold of them? In case you missed it, FP now include a leaflet with every order with instructions on how to tune traps I'm 100% with you about having a stainless trap with a barrel of 60mm width but I also think that those holes through which the trigger wires pass need to be smaller Everyone will have the choice; if and when this project gets off the ground You may be able to buy the historically correct version, made with modern materials (stai

Householders, gardeners, etc "using those traps to a greater degree of efficiency" , ? possibly, not necessarily automatically, though. The options already there, for them anyway.Theres another failrly well known gentleman, offering tuition, & pre-tuning traps for all customers, before they buy off him.

That's a fair point Nicepix and one that I myself have wrestled with for a few years The thing is, a determined amateur will always find a way of doing it themselves. They can buy several DVDs, books, book on one of the many courses available or even, dare I say it, read this forum. It won't make them molecatchers Another advantage of a company like FP taking this on is that they don't supply in large volumes to wholesalers or garden centres; which is the main source of traps for those determined amateurs. The fact is, there is more than enough information out there to make

I too considered this, but we cant stop 'the tide' now,...lol (sadly) i suppose also, the amount of people involved in molecatching nowadays, could help justify to a manufacturer, that its worth trying to produce a better trap ? Its 'desirability' (hopefully) would generate sales, and could ensure a decent 'output'.

Anyway, as promised, the trap arrived today. First impressions are that it's a very solid, well made trap. Although it's a narrower version of what they currently sell, it's made out of stainless steel throughout, and I have to say that it's very nice There are no burrs to the edges, and it sets and fires OK. Now, on to what I don't like about it. First of all, the barrel itself is still to wide for my liking. I've measured it with a rule, and it's 67mm from outside edge to outside edge. I can't remember how wide the original JND trap is (Paul?), but this is about the same

It might be because someone had a word with them about it last year Does the one you are talking about have SS trigger loops? This little beauty is SS throughout But you are right; the retaining bar 'snags' on any burr left on the end of that hook whilst I understand what you are saying about not wanting to pay them to sort it, something in my bones tells me that they will want to sort it out themselves. Chris comes across as an engineer at heart, and most importantly, one with enough pride to want to be able to make a really good quality product Edited to add, if an

the one ive got was fine, & i liked the weight,...use something else now, though,...

" using a Dremmel with a grinding wheel,....." , well, thats getting rather 'technical' for me.Im not that 'handy', so im never going to have alot of tools, a vice, workshop,etc,....ha ha.Usually got by, with a few pair of pliers,though,.....lol I'm useless at DIY. I used to file them manually, but Lidl were selling power tools at €17 so I use that now. The vice was a tenner. Just bending the wire doesn't solve the problem of swarf from the cutting machine causing the trigger to hang at the last point of contact. I like your thinking,there,...

That's interesting Nicepix To be fair, I've never actually seen one of the stainless versions up close and personal; as I posted earlier, the problems I had with my original batch of Flatpacks put me off ordering any more I'd ask, nay beg, anyone reading this with an interest in the subject to get hold of Flatpack ASAP and ask them to read what's been written here Here's a link to their contact page I still believe the half barrel trap, overall, is the best 'design' of mole trap, but the only way the manufacturers might address, concerns, is if sales of the trap started

Well done mate, you aint half being doing well, in recent times, catching the 'coloured' ones,...lol Can i have one, please ? lol -
Well i can tell you, that i have fallen out of love, with the half barrel mole trap,.......lol You guys have highlighted very well, all the problems,we have with the fairly recent & current crop.I have probably purchased 150 plus , of the 'bethel' type ,the last 15/20 year. Sadly, the last box i got sent (a while ago, now) the traps were 'substandard'.Previously, i could "tune" them to a satisfactory standard, but the last ones were more difficult.Disappointingly, any other 'samples' i received, from other manufacturers, werent any easier, for ME personally, to 'adjust' either. It really is

Are you kidding ? ,...lol You must try and pay attention in class, from now on, young man,...ha ha ha (only joking, mate)
