Applying for shot gun licencse
danebrewer10 replied to Penda's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
well, if you have permission to shoot on land then it'll be slightly easier, but the FEO (is that right?) will have to look at it and confirm that the caliber you want to purchase is safe to use on that ground. -that is especially if you're after a caliber expressly for fox shooting- i'd have thought the biggest they'd let you have would be something llike .243 win or .260 rem. if you want to have a deer rifle that can do double duty on foxes and you want something bigger like .308/.30-06.270 win etc then you'll probably have to demonstrate that you are actually going to use it for deerstalkin -
Who here lamps with shotguns?
danebrewer10 replied to whippeter69's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I've tried it, it works best if its's slightly windy to blow your scent away, also to cover any noise up, also if the bunnies are really skittish, you'd be best off with a rifle, but get someone else to hold the lamp and stand out of the beam as with the first shot, the light from the lamp reflects off the powder particles and you can't see a damn thing! 12 bore with 30g no 6 -
hmmm 200 euros....what's that in pounds sterling...? I'll just check..... £185 as of today, hmmm I'd have a look at leupold, nikon, nikko stirling, but I'd definitely stay away from scopes thay have great feature on paper but are cheap for what they are... I have a 3-9x56 IR walther scope on my air rifle, and it's pretty tricky to zero, on my new Anschutz rimmy (.17 HMR) i'll be getting an S&B 8x56 Hungarian for £476 roughly.... pricey but they're damn good scopes... honestly? I'd spend a bit more and get yourself a top notch scope, but there's nothing wrong with the lower priced scopes,

Applying for shot gun licencse
danebrewer10 replied to Penda's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
thanks mate it was armed tresspass but i didnt go to court or any thing just gave me a caution hmmm armed trespass- the old plod din't like anything to do with firearms, I was shooting squirrels at my grandmothers a few years ago and I got reported, the rozzers came over and just checked that I wasn't some sort of terrorist! but depending on how long ago it was.... I honestly don't know, it will be in the firearms officers mind, but as you're applying for a shotgun certificate, I wouldn't have though it will pose a huge problem, just gotta prove that you're a of sound character and mind -
Should've just gotten a Kimber Montana.... 5lb 2 oz without anything on it...sweet rifle....Just have to wait 'till I need one

I'd go no further than yd you pin point head shots and no further than 50 yd for chest shots, best bet, get a .22WMR barrel for it, that would be better for foxes, but i think ammo is a bit hard to find...

Pigeon shooting 5s or 6s??
danebrewer10 replied to solo-hunter's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
5/6 6/5 dosen't really matter, I use 30g no 6, but 28g will do great as well, no more then 32g, if you "need"more than that you're shooting too far...IMHO -
good lord man! eat him! can't get better meat! have a look on youtube for "pan fried pigeon mark gilchrist" done this way it's beautiful!

Do you really save money reloading?
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
aye but a friend shoots 7x57 federal premium nosler partitions, @ £40 for a box of 20! £2 a pop!!!!! bet that hurts when he buys ammo oooh but yes it does allow you to tailor a couple of loads to you rifle, like fox & deer loads... also handy if you shoot exotic or hard to find calibers.... your rifle can never be too accurate -
how about a tipped Barnes expander sabot slug through a rifled barrel....? BOOM.... SPLAT! hmmm fox jerky all prepared and hanging on the bushes to dry....

"so why not learn from the experts who have from experience found the right chokes to use." Because I'm not as good as the "experts" and I do it for fun, not money... were not discussing what "everybody else" uses, only what we use ourselves

I'd go no further than 30-40 yd with BBs or AAA, load wise, 34 gram BB or really as heavy as you can get!- NB- check your chamber length as well, you don't want to go shooting 3" AAA through a 21/2 " gun! or even a 23/4 through a 21/2 gun- doesn't bear thinking about.... i think now there are some 3 1/2 inch chambers Yeah, Bretta, benelli and remington I know for sure do 31/2 inch chambers probably hatsan, winchester, and fabarm as well...

not really, just answer the questions truthfully and you won't have any problems!

to say there isn't myxomatosis where you are is piffle, it's everywhere, though rabbits are building a good resistance to it and it is becoming much less prevalent, though it does need the right conditions to become evident in a number of rabbits so that you can actually see it- obviously the sick and weak will be picked off by foxes and the like. also as others have said, you do see rabbits with scarring around the eyes where the fur doesn't grow, they've obviously had myxy in the past and have recovered from it, I try and leave those to pass on their resistance to the next generation...

Oh no not another one of these I really think people get too concerned with chokes, which is fueled by having multi chokes and the ability to change them, I shoot 1/4 and 1/2 in my s/s- works fine. the other day I shot with 1/4 choke in a friends semi and scored 22 ex 25 at skeet and 29 ex 50 at sporting,- really good for me. Now, some people would be changing chokes at each stand, to get the best pattern etc etc etc, but as long as when you pull the trigger, the gun goes bang and the pellets fly out the end, if you stick with a fairly open choke say 1/4 or half if as somebody else said

Do you really save money reloading?
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
aah cheers all, Also how long does it take you to say reload 20 rounds at a time and do most of you use a single stage or progressive press? Cheers! -
Hi all, I'm just wonderin' here do all you reloaders actually save any money reloading or is it just to get maiximum accuracy? I would have thought that if you shoot something common like a .308/.243/.223 etc then the saving wouldn't be that great but if you were shooting sth like 7x57/8x57/.338 federal/.300WM or any of the WSM calibers etc then the saving would be greater because of the more expensive ammo? What are your experiences? Cheers

hmmm do you have cheap scope on it? I have a £50 walther 3-9x56 IR scope on my air rifle, scope is horrid to zero.... I'm now getting an anschutz .17 hmr with a Schmidt & Bender 8x56- expensive, but at least it won't be a problem!!

Sauer 202 or Blaser R93
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not quite sure what you intended to write here. However the Blaser bolt is a very simple bolt to strip for cleaning and as for the pull action, one gets used to it very quickly and would soon see the benefits of this type of action. I have had two Blasers for nearly 10 years - off road in 6.5 x 55 and a Luxus in 22.250 - or if needed they could be the other way around!! I have three other conventional bolt action rifles and never get confused between them and the Blasers what kind of accuracy do you get out of you blaser, I understand it is very good.... Mag hold -
.243- flat & fast lots of meat damage in comparison with the .308- smaller bullet but much larger hydrostatic shock due to the bullet velocity- nice all rounder. .308- less meat damage, less suitable for foxes, but you could get home hollowpoint match rounds, or something like a .308 hornady v-max varmint bullet also if your shot placement isn't as good, you get more penetration on quartering shots, and more knock down power For me? I'd try and get a .308, if they won't let you have that? then get the .243 also as your shots are at moderate range, you won't have to wor

Probably an eagle cheek piece/bag- have a look on shooting sports magazine- the guy who tests the rifles in there uses one...

Hi all, here again clogging up the forum but has anyone got/shot/seen a kimber Montana? they look gorgeous! I just love the slim barrel that the weight 5lb 1oz!!!! Ok you wouldn't want to shoot it a lot, 'cause of the weight and the slim barrel, but for carrying all day and shooting once maybe twice, you don't get much better! IMO... also, what about the .338 federal? has anyone shot one of those, overkill for the UK, but a big relatively slow bullet to have knock down power without damaging too much meat? here's alink to Kimbers' website... http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles/84m

I'm not really sure, I don't actually have a full bore rifle, But i understand, they're ptetty flat shooting, with the proper bullet and shot placement can take elk, (at a pinch) they're pretty barky and have quite sharp recoil.... really a bit much for the UK, but if you were shooting mule deer in the states where they're larger then it would be just the ticket, the bullet's pretty fast so expect some jellied meat, I would prefer a larger slower bullet, like the .308 or the .338 federal.... an interesting round... but there's not a massive choice of bullets but probably enough for most people
