If the kitts go in all guns blazing on whatever they stumble on , then you stand a chance, if they come out , pissing about after a few tries, they are no better than pet fodder. Get rid, get without. Ferreting as we know it is losing out when half arsed ferrets are bieng used. MESSERS WILL DEFEND THE CRAP, THEY DON'T USE THEM!
-
A couple of days slimming may not work though, getting an animal into shape takes a few weeks, probably nearer a month to be honest. Most will show willing within a few outings fat or in shape.
-
Sounds like he is messing about, if he one of last years, a bit fat and not been out much then he may stand a chance if slimmed down and given the work, but it sounds like you know the real answer to whether you should keep one that is not interested. Sounds like the older one is a good un, some don't make the grade, even bred from good stock!

Everything you say is true there, but put a good beddy grey against a good collie grey and is there any plus points? Yep the collie has a stamina background. What was the beddie bred for in the first place?
-
Just split them up and they will be fine! You can ponce around with all sorts, but the general clean hutch/ clean bed will go a long way. If there is anything serious then the vet or the humane depending on worth.

Wants rid alltogether? Where do you fit into this long term plan? Wipe the breeding rabbits and there young out alltogether? See you in september crying there is nothing to hunt...
-
Get a good collie cross, and you have a crack at a dog which probably has more brains than the owner! How many dogs will still walk off the hill at 14 yrs old without a scratch!
-
You won't get any wee rabbits if you don't hunt out of season! Sit back, watch them grow, and when they are old enough, then hunt them in september!
-
Yep! thats what i've witnessed! And i'm a bone to bone collie cross man! But get that good one, and see that retard of a young dog that eventually shine's and there's your once in a lifetime dog! I have had the pleasure of seeing that dog, and will give my all to see it happen again! THEN YOU WILL BE AT THE POINT WHERE A DOG TELLS YOU WHEN IT'S HAD ENOUGH, AND WHEN YOU WILL GO HOME, AND TELLS YOU WHO THE JACKER IS! The bloodline is still there, and looking strong, so one day ity will happen again, even if i'm sixty years old!

Break out the lube!

Thanks for the info. Just as a matter of interest, were they deffo at home? I've seen and had ferrets in the past though that don't get stuck in, and some rabbits know there not in any serious danger and stay put, really wanted to see a positive outcome to this, and a few animals for us to see. Shame you have not got a few seasoned ferrets from working stock to fire things up! Maybee could these critter be out running the ferret below ground?

Fished a match today, got this beauty a pb red spot around the 3lb mark and almost 50 cm's long, got two others as well!
-
food! He'll be great untill he uses up all his reserves, then when gone falls away. Try giving him more grub as his workload is likely to increase. Just as a matter of interest, is he a 'fast dog'? (Whippet/greyhound type?)

If you have to do a job Takman, then get it it done, and nobody will judge you on it! But if you are trying to secure future permisssion, then all of your work may be in vain if you wipe out your permission. Tell them you will sort it in the correct season.

If you lads in Carlisle are struggling then give me a shout, i have a tribe of 7 hobs (one of them a pensioner) but the other 6 fired up and ready, and PROVEN killing machine's. In lancs so could sort a visit out maybee.

i do realise that there is no written law to stop ferreting or a closed season for rabbiting... and do accept that their being shot, gased e.t.c. which for me none are a form of sport. i do believe ferreting is a sport... just find that some when there doing it this time of year are quick to say there doing it soley for a pest control purpose. for me i wouldnt do it at all unless for the sport of it and do believe that a break to ensure the rabbit numbers will be there for the next seasons sport... i think if its done this way then 1 good permission if managed right can last a lifetime...

That is so cold p***y, the jills must feel proper violated without the romance!
-
This is certainly an interesting topic, and i will be looking in especially to see the outcome from this. From the general appearance of the animal, it looks like it may give quite a good account of itself against a ferret. What size of ferret will you use? Hobs or jills? and are they killers or bolters?

i wasnt pushing it at all and it was with me spinning rod and a 2-3 oz lead i think with me beachcaster i should wing it a way, are i think it was diawa millionares good? Yes the daiwa 7ht's are good, but the abu mag elites ct's have the edge and are timeless reels. Any of the 6500 mag elite's have the mag brakes and blocks. Either make a good tournament or fishing reel. -
I'm now down to 10 ferrets, (7 hobs and 3 jills). All my ferrets are bred to engage the rabbit. (Usually does not take that long for the hobs to do the business), and can be digging within a minute of the hob being entered, no need to wait, he'll be on to the next before I get to them. Any that won't do this are of no use to me! Some people like the idea of using a ferret that comes out when it moved all the spooky rabbits that bolt as soon as they sniff a ferret. Some take more moving, and without the will to kill, some will never bolt for a gibber. I use the big killing machine

Good chucking for a youngling on a seastreak! A feller called Paul Johnstone casts at our tournaments at North Western Surcasting Association, he had a cast last year on one of the old seastreaks that hit 209 yards. The reel lived up to it's nickname of the 'Intrepid Sea-screech'. Like John said, stick an abu on and you will see the distance increased by quite a bit! -
Once again nice to see dogs running on tricky ground and catching a few, a few people might understand why you have the dogs that you have. Glad to see the dog back from injury and firing on all cylinders again.

i beg to differ, ive got a 3 year old Patterdale dog that works very well with my ferrets, marks up works te bury off the lead, and doesnt fight with any other dog working. Must admit, don't let my own experience of a large over- violent russel dog sway your judgement in any way, shape or form. (he's a pig full stop, but a thorough pig at that!) A well said terrier is priceless for marking, but thats where it ends. Average lurchers bring more to the table to be honest, and thats from somebody who loves the ability of a terrier.

A complete pain in the arse! On there own, a good one will leave no stone left unturned, and find every rabbit anywhere, on any ground, but on the downside, will kick off with other dogs and will try you patience for years and years!
