  1. Weather forecast said sheite, but went anyhow. Got a good morning out of it on what seemed like barren land, but perserverence paid off. Same dogs, two nasty poley hobs, and then rain by 12 pm ended up with a few in the end. No dragging ferrets were used, and no pet dogs used to get the bag! Out tmoz on a terrier day, at last a change.
  2. Dont rely on the forecast! we would have been sick today or last weekend if we had'nt tried! only got half days but worthwhile!
  3. Finding a light coloured ferret does make it easier to see, using a black eyed animal, well I have found that the senses on one are a bit more alert than the albino animals. (the albino's will always be my choice.) (not that they are less of a hunter, just a little slower in the light!) (does not matter a fraction underground in the dark, where no one can see the colour of there eye's, or coat!)
  4. Nice one dude's. Get at the rascals again soon! Bouncer behave!
  5. Its a common occurance, and seems to happen more with the jills being the cause of it. They do all eventually after a long while get used to each other.(Usually). I have known jills that have bred that year kick off something rotten with the kits at a certain age, i suppose its just nature, the mother seeing the young ones off saying she's had enough and its time for them to fend for themselves. Usually by xmas this settles down though.
  6. Think it would finish him off Stealthy!
  7. Handy is what they are Para, good but nothing special yet. Both have faults, but they have a bit of promise which makes you want to watch them more and more. They are lurcher crosses, all from collie grey mating overs a few generations. Who can tell for sure whats in them? The work will make the dogs though, shame its only for 6 months of the year!
  8. They are a little on the skinny side after 2 days on the run mate, told the old chap to up the food for them, seen them lose it over the weekend, the milage they clock up takes it out of a dog. You doing much?
  9. Got up a little later today after a few drinks last night watching the Haye fight. On our way onto the land, we stumbled upon a couple of the "just out for a walk crew" 2 chaps, one beddy whippet type netting up on there walk. Sounds like they might have had permission from another farm we have permission on, they didnt on the land they were just "walking on" which is a long way away from the land they reckoned to be on. Old feller told them to move on, which they did, but way off in the distance, ferreted the odd warren on there way off. Pricks. To be honest, the dog they had could not cat
  10. Plenty of time for you to get Col out yet mate! Looking forward to the speeding sky van getting three pointers soon! Hows the Bouncer?
  11. Taking out the loose is all down to the width of the spade head and the angle of it. The standard Spear and Jackoff was too keen, meaning you could not drive it down into the dig. Got the spade on the cooker at gas mark 9 for 20 mins with the blowlamp helping out, then hit it with the maul. This split the spade's paddle, but got a mate to weld it up. Seems like it's strong enough on the boulders! Its allways a trade off between strength and lightness, and the depth you dig. Getting close, but not just there yet!
  12. Is that the hole where i walked off and left him through gabbing too much? Spike is evil, in a good way!
  13. Spade is a customised Spear and Jackson! Just cut it down and tweaked it this year! Its getting a plastic handle soon though, dont think the ash handle will last with me!
  14. After the poor performance from the young dogs last week, (I say poor, but its only the faults that make me say poor.) I found all three dogs looking at me from the back of the truck at 6 am when the old feller picked me up. He said he was just going to bring one dog and work it properly as we are going out on Sunday as well, but he could not help himself as usual. "What are you going to do with all the dogs?" I asked him as i got in the truck, "going to keep two on the leads and work one at once." Here we go again. I dont mind there being all the dogs there to be honest, its good to ha
  15. Nothing really to report, out on saturday, good conditions, mild weather, just stayed fine. Finally got the old chap to work the young dogs on there own, locking the others in the truck out of the way. Finally it showed up the faults the dogs have, rather than the pair of them picking up the pieces of the others failure, they were made to work on there own, showing there biggest faults, which since last season i knew were there, but the old feller could not see. We have a pair of dog collie grey crosses, bred from our own dogs which have proven they can do the business. Jed and Robbie.
  16. Have to agree with what Whin said, 8 yrs is a good age for a ferret. Maybee its her time. ATB Brim.
  17. Nice to hear people who appreciate the importance of locaters and ferret welfare, rather than the usual shite that i've not used one in 50 years.
  18. Nice one FV! good bag and write up! Great to hear the full story and piccies to go with it!
  19. Probably easier with a mk 3 locater on the windy days, (Yes the mk3 will score above a mk1 on this occasion!). Rabbits bolt when they want to and dont bolt when they dont want to. Usually early in the season, the juvenille's will bolt easy peasy, give the rabbits until after xmas and some of them have learnt to stay put and kick out. There is lot of rubbish talked about weather affecting the rabbits bolting, its nonsense. Fair play some will stay put if they see/hear/smell a team above ground, but most weathered rabbits will bolt only if they see the odds stacked against them in the shape
  20. Always trust the dog mate. They have the tools we dont have! Looks like a nice gentle breaking in for Saff mate, future is looking bright!
  21. Missed this one, am I too late to say well done? Well in Tomo and co. Hope you reset the gate after you bent it with sheer weight of bunnies!
  22. Nice one Magwitch, was trying to work out what the last picture was, it took me about 2 minutes to realize it was the back end of a terrier stuck out of a hole! I should know better!
  23. Simple really, get digging.
  24. Must admit John the one's i got off ebay dont seem sturdy, but uptil now are doing the job. Would prefer some decent thicker ones.
