  1. Asked this question last year, heard the term greyhound ferrets from lots of old boys, and my old man as well, but none of them could tell me what a greyhound ferret was! This to my knowledge is the best i can get. A lean ferret, usually an albino jill, long in the back almost springy like. Are these two anything like by anyone's standards?
  2. Mine would retract if I thought they were going to be disconnected! The vet probs can get a clear shot when theyre out, i'm no vet but i'm sure that one worth his salt could sort it at any time of year.
  3. Why would it be too late? For working in the near future?
  4. When will deben bring back the mark one? Or at least back us up with the maintenance on their product? One day I will have to buy a new finder, its not with joy I will have trying the new product, but the kick in the ass I have no other option but to use a noisy overcomplicated piece of tat. The mk 1 worked, a little quiet in the strongest of wind, but a great piece of kit. very simple even my old man can use it! Hope someone dosent get so motivated that they go to china and get people to make replacement mk1 innards for 50 pence each!
  5. Forget the nets to start with. Let the dog see some action for the trouble of marking, bolt them for the dog to run and catch, this encourages marking up and keeps the interest on the job rather than wandering off bored.
  6. Time is the key with the terrier/ ferret combo. You will need to keep on top of them to start with. You may have to be 'hard' with the dog, but they come around with a lot of work.
  7. Hi guys, good to be back at it. After two attempts trying to start off our season towards the end of Sept were scuppered by the unusually high autumn temps, we finally got out for a day on the rabbits today. The two previous attempts saw us heading for home within an hour or so due to the 18 degrees c temps and the runners blowing. (pretty close to finishing them as there black dogs, the sun hits them hard when putting a lot of runs in.) There were flies everywhere on the kills, also most of the rabbits were three-quarter grown and no challenge for any animal. (in between the mixi one'
  8. Nice one Andy, nice to see the tiny little squirts have still got it!
  9. What a smart looking little dog! Sure that would have the makings of a good marking dog. What size is it standing to shoulder?
  10. Went out myself yesterday on the high ground for the first time this season. Within an hour or or so we realised we shouldnt really be there, no young but a lot of three quarter grown bunnys. They were very easy pickings for the ferrets and dogs, nothing really sporting to be honest, plus due to the heat the flies were everywhere within minutes, plus the dogs were struggling with the heat. Gave up shortly afterwards with 27 rabbits bagged, and feeling like we had acheived nothing but carnage. Within a few more weeks the rabbits will have there full size, the weather will be cooler, and it w
  11. Posted how i fixed a couple last year. Here's the link to the thread. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...c=83881&hl=
  12. Only just seen this, get well soon Col, you'll soon be up and at em mate. All the best from myself and the team.
  13. Old one has called, 7 long days until we set foot on the sacred grass. Tooth, Claw, Spade ready. Tic- Toc.
  14. Nice work, been trying to tie a few up myself out of nylon, getting a decent knot on that stuff is punishing me TBH. I could tie some out of hemp but nets are something i don't look after like the animals, so nylon twine is a must! (Plus the thicker nylon twine is the only thing the old one can set without getting into a tangle!) Once you get rolling there's no stopping you!
  15. Still far to many fluffballs around even on the high ground, plus the flies are still out in force, and the high temps will knock the dogs off there legs. End of Sept at the earliest for me, (I'll make up for it though you can be sure!)
  16. Even at that age it's worth worming them, seen it in the past, especially if they have had any flesh to eat.
  17. Could be those barsteward kids from down the road! Ferret keepers would never leave there cages open!
  18. Come on, everybody admit it, we have all left the cages opened now and then! Luckily ferrets being ferrets they'll show you there out in minutes!
  19. Deffo worth keeping an eye on, quite often i find the ferrets with vertabrae from the chickens i feed them stuck in the scissors of the jaw. Gentle pressure from the thumb seems to dislodge the piece of rubbery bone in no time, but left they would suffer for sure. Even the nastiest of ferrets seems relieved when you do this for them!
  20. Fair enough Coney, sounds like a job rather than the sport mate.
  21. Its what we call a bluey, Occurs naturally like the blacks and the patched ones we call dutchys. They may have links to certain bloodlines 100's of generations ago, but occur quite a lot. Always nice to catch them. Would prefer to be catching them when fully grown in a months time though.
  22. Sorry fellers been away the weekend, thanks for the posts. Will look into the info given, and see if i can follow it up! I'm going to start asking around with the farmers on the land we go on when the season starts, sure they'll have a few tales to tell. I,m sure life must have been hard back then, but some folks used to control rabbits, day in day out as there job. (Might not have been a huge wage, but would still like to hear of the methods/seasons/animals they used, totals they got in a year, and the payment they recieved. Thanks fellers.
  23. Keep your lugs open mate, not long for it now!
  24. Jeeze! He's in the moult, give him a week or two and he'll look like a shiny brand new kit! (all mine are moulting at present!)
