I remember patrolling down a wooded hill in Kosovo when we came under contact ... As we took cover one of the lads tripped and went head overs tits down the hill ... The problem is wilf that no man knows how he is going cope with what he sees or does in in a wartime situation until it actually happens ... That's a bit silly that is it not...I have a year old son here who is a right wee chubby chap...and he's in the 96th percentile for age/weight...which means 96% of kids his age are lighter than him...am I worried eh....no....is the health visitor/doc worried eh....no...he's a strong, healthy and robust kid...never ill or poorly...all of my kids have been wee chubby things...all pictures of health and well being...wife has mates with skinny wee runty kids always ill and snottering all over... I never said they were unfit as fitness is a personal thing but the fact remains that MOST TA lads will not have the experience or training of a full time soldier ... to say anything different is silly ... It's like saying a special bobby has the experience and knowledge of a full time copper .........

Fitness has nothing to do with it .... Training and education has everything to do with it and a TA soldier will have nowhere near the knowledge and experience of a full time soldier fit or not and that's what makes the difference when the shit hits the fan .........

Just read the article and I find it strange thAt 6 of them collapsed as the hill phase of selection is an individual effort so for 6 people to push themselves to that state at the same time is pretty remote ... Reading between the lines it seems to me they were on a squadded tab/run which if is the case whoever was taking that is in a world of shit ...........

This again proves the point that a TA soldier is miles apart from a full time soldier ... Taking on board plenty of fluids is basics when you are on an arduous rout march and something that is drilled into you through your basic training and on into your career ... A mechanic or banker etc that turns up once a week for two hours then a weekend here and there is NEVER going to be at the same level as a professional soldier yet the government is cutting back on service men and increasing the TA's ... Part time soldiers defending the country ......... However these lads will have gone through
