  1. My mutt will pick up anything I shoot, very useful if a bird drops in the next field and there's no way through the hedge, But he's a ratbag in that if he hears a shot go off in the next field he'll piss off to give the shooter a hand I had visions of using him in a hide when pigeon shooting but soon gave that up because every time I took a shot he'd be through the hide whether I'd hit anything or not, and often take the feckin hide with him.
  2. Note to self... next time you decide to go out at first light take a pair of waterproofs. I'm soaked to the f***in skin from the dew.

It would take a braver man than me to wear shorts where I went, the nettles are 5 foot high. The dog looks at me as though I've gone mad. Mind you it helps with his jumping, LOL

  4. Thanks for the replies lads, I've been offered a pup from a future mating off 2 good dogs by a member on here that sound perfect for what I want. Hopefully I'll be posting pictures of my new prospect in the next few months.
  5. The only thing I wouldn't want is saluki or bull blood, other than that anything. My mutts thrown to the beddy side and I'm more than happy with his obedience and as I said he's a good mooching dog with a good nose but to big and heavy for rabbits. If I could have put him on more I'm sure he would have been a lot better but my permissions don't hold enough for him get regular lamping, I'm lucky to get a half dozen runs in a couple of hours. I'm going to have time on my hands when I pack in work and want this new pup to be a dog I can train to a good standard, maybe even a pigeon shooting com
  6. I'll take you up on that in the season mate, Thanks for the offer. Tom
  7. A threequarter beddy whippet was my first thought mate, but I was worried they would be a bit fragile and a half cross stronger but too small. A mate of mine runs three whippets, and one has broken its neck this year and the other two are always limping, it's tended to put me off a bit.
  8. I'll be on the lookout for a new pup at the end of the year but can't decide what will be best for me, so I'd appreciate any ideas you lads would have. I'll be retiring then so it will probably be my last working dog and I want to make sure I start with as good a dog as I can. My present dog is beddy grey whippet x bull grey whippet and a fair old size, and if I'm honest not much of a rabbiting dog, though I love him to bits and he does do other things well given the chance, unfortunatly I haven't much interest in that side of it. I'm after a dog that will compliment him as he's a good moochi
  9. Definately Bedlington in my opinion. When he's on something I doubt you could get him off it with a command, though some on here are much better trainers than me and may have an idea. And if he can bring fox back to hand alive he's a miracle dog in my mind,,,and you are in for some whacking great vets bills
  10. A bit like Gaz but I make sure it's at least 6 hours from feeding to lamping, I like to feed around 2ish if possible.and lamp for about 11.00
  11. It's the same as dogs with cats, mine will let our cat take all sorts of liberties, but any other would be fair game.
  12. I'll never understand how it can be right to shoot a hare from god knows how far away and wrong for a dog to run it, giving it a fair chance of freedom. Lovely pics mate.
  13. Why not buy 2 hawks at the same time? Then you can train all four to be perfect at the same time and it will save you waiting around. Seriously, if you're a young lad as I think you are I apologise, but to say you are new to the game and then that you can train 1 pup to a good standard let alone 2 would be a surprise. I've put in a hell of a lot of hours into my dog (my first lurcher) and he's nowhere near a worldbeater. If you take on 2 at once you are in for a shedful of heartache mate.
  14. To be honest I've no real preference but I want to have everything sorted in my mind well before I look for a new pup because I would never get rid of a dog I owned. I'll be 60 in the new year and horrible as it sounds this will probably be my last working dog because 43 years in the building trade is catching up fast with me and I reckon I'll be fooked by the time I'm 70. As far as my mutt goes, no he'd never be considered a great dog but as a first lurcher with all the mistakes I've made over the last few years with him he's turned out as well as I could have asked and better than a some I
  15. I watched one called The Trollenberg Terror when I was about 5 or 6 and it scared the crap out of me. It was on telly years later and I watched it with the kids expecting them to be terrified like I'd been but they just laughed at how crap it was.
  16. It'll have to be a fookin big teddy, he's 26" and 70lb plus  I'm leaning toward just getting another dog now after reading these replies.
  17. I was fishing with my brother in law many moons ago and he came over moaning the local swan was attacking him. I just walked over and gave it a clip round the beak when it came at me and the problem was solved, it never came near us again. I can't see why a 30 lb bird would frighten a grown man, there's only going to be one winner in a fight, and as far as the old wives tales of one breaking bones with it's wings well I'm sure mine are a sight bigger and stronger than a swans so I don't see how it could happen.
  18. Cheers for that, I was told they needed a first season to allow hormones through their bodies. It sounded a bit iffy but I wanted to make sure.

Think I might have burned my bridges with him mate besides, krankys been the most helpful and I'm a loyal c**t that way. Plus he said the favourite Scottish word...... Gift And possibly one or two more on here???

Blue Pocket Rocket is up your way and does great cattys at really good prices so I'd have a word with him mate. As for ammo my favourite is 10mm but they cost a fair bit more than the 9.5mm, and yes, they are a biatch to learn how to shoot
  21. I'm hoping to finally wrap up work in the new year and will be getting a new pup then as I can give it more attention, but the wife really wants a bitch not another dog. I've no problem in principle with that but have been told it will need to have it's first season before spaying and can imagine the chaos that will bring with my 5 year old unneutered dog. So, does a bitch have to have a first season or can she be spayed before then? Both will live in so kennelling is not an option.
  22. Much easier to buy one mate. I'm guessing if it's a toilet window it will be quite small, in which case the 100x65 will be ample.Any thing much over 4 foot and you would be better off getting someone in because you will have some bricks come down on you, possibly quite a few. iIf you do have to rebuild a few make sure you pack the final course with slate or something similar or you will have a crack appear later on.
  23. You wont need approval mate. As long as it's no more than 4 foot or so a prestressed concrete lintel will be fine, anything much over that and an RSJ would be better. You'll need a minimum 4" overhang, 6" if you can get it.
