  2. Yeh thats what i have been doing mate thanks. After about 2 retrieves she seems to have got it, but we will see come the week end. These are all training days at the moment, the real fun starts on the Ducks in October, so she will be spot on by then i hope. Cheers Dave.

  4. I got a pair of Meindls last season after breaking my ankle in lesser boots, they are spot on would recom to anyone ATB Dave.
  5. Pretty new to Duck shooting so i got some good advice on the shooting section last week about leaving my shot ducks until the light has gone and retrieve them at the end of the flight, so as not to disturb other ducks flighting in and others on the water. So i was out again Saturday night and did just that, but when the time came for Fern to retrieve the mighty number of 3 that i shot, i flicked on the Lamp and she didnt have a clue, she couldnt see my hand signals and seemed quite confused by the whole lamp thing. So my question is, dose anyone do any training on water retrieves by lamp

  9. Your dead right nercwys, now is the time to tidy them up with there training and get them fit. Dave.
  10. I dont doubt anything you have said Paul, as i have had GWP and they are cracking dogs (great all rounders when mature) But the question is what is the easiest to train, i any one who has owned a German Pointer knows there is no way they are easier than a Lab to train. I am not saying that Labs are any better dogs before anyone starts, as i think very highly of the German Pointers both Wire and smooth, but the Labs are definitely easier to train. ATB Dave.
  11. Thanks lads. Do you take a lamp for locating the ducks after the flighting has finished. ATB Dave.
  12. Was out last Friday with my lad and the Lab for our first mooch about in a while (never took the camera). Took a nice rabbit that the dog hunted up, then we settled down in some reeds next to a small lake, some Mallards came in on the other side of the lake but well out of range, they called and a Mallard came out a steam behind us to land on the lake which i shot. When i got up with the dog to retrieve it (which she did well) the other Ducks flew off just out of range, no other ducks came in after that. My question is - should i have left the shot duck to retrieve later allowing the
  13. My favorite is Rough Shooting, working the dog hard, taking the odd bird or rabbit and watching a nice retrieve. On Driven shoots, how many of you lads keep score, like shots too birds taken. Or when Picking up how many your dog has picked. Just to compare seasons. Dave.
  14. Looking good mate. Good luck with your season. Dave.
  15. If you want a Springer get a Springer mate, you will always be happiest with the breed you like the best and what ever your sport you wont go far wrong with a spaniel. I wouldnt say a springer was the worst to train by a long way and as long as you dont rush things too much you will be fine. But the easiest to train is defenetly a Lab from good working stock, but you still have to put the time in to do the dog justice. ATB Dave.

  18. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Excellent idea you have had mate. Good luck with everything. Dave.
  19. Just wondering how different people measure the success of there individual shooting sports, whether it be Driven birds, Rough Shooting or even as a Beater. Is it just pure numbers shot against same time last season, Game shot against cartridges spent or as a Beater the better the birds fly the less the guns will hit. I know for most its just being there doing it, but what makes the day special in your game diary ? ATB Dave.
  20. Sounds good C. I just write my own in blank note book to tell you thr truth, but it is good to keep a record however you do it. How dose everyone write theres up, in a chart or in note form. And whats the measure of your day, numbers, amount of species or how the bird flew etc. ATB Dave.
  21. Hi Lee, not sure where in N Yorkshire you are but have you tried Gilsan Sports in Richmand 017488 22108 and Leyburn 019696 23942 if not i know Wilkinson Guns in Barnard Castle has them in. Do you get many different spieces on your shoot pal. ATB Dave
  22. GWP, will guard you with his life and excellent retrievers and allround dogs. Dave.
