Brought a tear to me eye this thread. Well done to all especially your brother for moving. TC

Your wrong there, some people have higher standards for their dogs, and learn how to achieve those standards. Others are just happy if their dog catches. Up to the individual. TC Higher standards or different standards? My current dog is a LTH dog, so were the previous dogs, that i've raised, before it. Imo it's not such a big deal to a lot of lurcherfolk and as i said, for some it's essential. I see blokes like Socks an Lloydy require their dog to do this as a requirement for a paid job. Others, like yourself, see it as a 'must have' quality because Lurchers can perform such a skill

TC suppose I did put that wrong think most dogs learn as they go just basics does me Nothing wrong with that at all. But why decry the people who work to get more out of their dogs? TC

Nearly every dog can be taught to retrieve. He was 18 months old when I had him and would not go in water. TC

Care to state what you think is drivel? TC

But it is not just the catch though is it? It's the whole experience the hunt, the catch and the retrieve are all part and parcel of the dogs work. TC In your world mate lol Actually all my lurchers have all been live to hand. I honestly cannot see the pleasure in owning a point and shoot dog that just kills the rabbits and drops them. To my eyes it reflects badly on the owner that he could not be bothered to teach the dog to retrieve, I mean it's not rocket science after all. TC Your moving the goal posts now.. Your talking about retrieving lol. Fair comment, but to me it

It's nice to see that some people maintaining high standards. Personally I like to have the option to use the rabbit for the table rather than a poorly trained dog who will bruise the catch or even worse not retrieve it to hand. It beggars believe that people are willing to accept anything less than their lurcher retrieving live to hand and it is no wonder why gun dog people regard us lurchermen with such low esteem. So what your saying is that a rabbit that is bruised, is caught by an untrained lurcher. I have gundogs and lurchers, I won't tolerate a gundog with a hard mouth but I'm not
-
Fair comment, but you often hear on here of dogs that will lay in to bigger stuff yet still retrieve rabbits alive. And to be honest I do not disbelieve the people who say it. TC
-
This has not been done for a while, how many of you will tolerate a hard mouthed dog? Personally I think next to stock worrying it is the worst fault a dog can have. I know some will tolerate it as I have seen in photos of dogs retrieving dead rabbits. I am not knocking any breed here as every dog has the potential to be hard mouthed. Your thoughts please. TC

First Attempt @ Taxidermy - Wee Red Leg Patridge
Tiercel replied to Johno2486's topic in Taxidermy & Tanning
Not a critique as such just an observation. If you look at all the best work, the study is always doing something. Also the studies setting is important it has to be as natural as possible to where you would find that study in the wild. That said, birds are one of the hardest animals to do because of the very thin skin. IMHO you have done a real good job with the Red leg and can only get better. TC -
They are a good tool when used properly of that there is no doubt. But, they are not really a necessity, you can manage quite efficiently without one, well I have for over 50 years. Just because a person chooses not to use one does not mean that he can be abused. Educated yes, but not veritably abused. There is just no need for it. TC

What a fecking vanker completely ridiculous. I have never owned a locator in my life, am I also completely ridiculous? Get off your high fecking horse and drink some milk good boy. Ferreting went on before the advent of locators and will still go on without them. FFS grow up and act your age not your shoe size. TC

Terry that quarry is the only place I know of where you need a ladder to ferret it. Dog seems to be coming along well now. TC

Was watching the bronze medal match, but that John Lacey has really put me off. The man could not manage an under 8 team yet alone a world cup game. he has no empathy for the game at all. He is killing the game with his whistle. TC

The three main ones are Milbrmax Panacure and Advocate. Although they do not recommend the first two for collie blooded dogs as they contain Ivomectin. TC
