  1. As with most subjects when they are new to you, it can be quite daunting trying to come to grips with the terminologies that are used. I have put together some of the terminologies that are used in long netting and net making and explanations of the terms. Hopefully it will give newcomers and old hands a better understanding of the netting process. I think we should start by looking at the makeup of a net. A net is made up of connected meshes, and it does not matter if they are hand knitted or machine made on a loom, they are all knitted in rows. MESH A mesh is a diamond shape consisting
  2. That is in inches. It is 2 inches and one 8th of an inch. If it makes it any easier it is 54 mm
  3. You have not told me if you have made nets, so I will asume that even though you say you know how to make them, you have never actually made some. Every thing has its own lanuage, and for you to understand better I will give you a brief description of the terms used in making nets. The holes in the net are called meshes. The meshes are made with a mesh board. Each row that you make is a half mesh. It takes two rows to make a full mesh. Think of it like this, when making a purse net you make the first row on a ring, that is half a mesh. It is only when you complete the second row d
  4. Right lets start at the begining. Did you make the purse nets? Your answer will decide what type of advice you need. TC
  5. 1.8 to 2mm hollow braid is fine. Agouti's long net twine. http://www.agouti-nets.co.uk/product/42-500g-brown-long-net-twine Most people use a 21/8" mesh board that gives you 41/4" mesh size. With the selvedge half meshes it should hang about 60 inches that would be 13 meshes + 2 half selvedge meshes = 14 meshes deep. TC
  6. add 2 persil liqatabs and set to 1200 spin speed Fcuk sake I just fell off my chair laughing. Aboslutly brilliant  TC
  7. I have not heard a cuckoo for donkeys years. When I was a kid the magic date was the 27th of april and one year I did hear one on the 25th. I just looked at the date on my pc and it's the 26th. It never ceases to amaze me how they can turn up the same time every year. TC
  8. If only Joe was closer. Thank god he is not, if he had been closer I would have had one of the pups, even though I have said no more lurchers for me. I have watched the pups through photos since they were born and its been bloody hard not to send that pm. I admire Joe in that he does not let hard cash sway his principles. Anyone getting one of these pups will have a head start on a genuine rabbiting dog. TC
  9. I do one patch of land that has a cycle path running through it. People walk their dogs there even in the night. One night I had the net running along the side of the path and a young couple came round the corner of the path just as I was starting the bant. I could not make out what they were saying but could hear something. Next thing I kicked a rabbit that was squatting and it headed for home, it hit the net behind them and started squealing, the woman screamed and they both started running like hell down the path. TC
  10. No CW it wasnt her, he was a lot better than her. TC
  11. Ain't that just the truth!...I'd like to bet mate that NONE of the ego hunters even keep a Lurcher these days?...know of several like you mentioned, they are all have beens lol and when I look back now very poor dog men they were...in the pub they were legends lol.. Legends in thier own minds. TC
  12. Once upon a time about 30 years ago. I had a very good dog. There was no internet, no one knew what anyone else was catching in other parts of the country. (exept what was read in the shooting news) and that was taken with a pinch of salt. In the town I lived there were about half a dozen serious dog owners, we would meet up in a pub on a friday night and have some great aguments. Yet even back then there would always be the ones with the green eyes, they always wanted to be the best, yet funnily enough they always were the ones that were trading dogs, always had a new pup on the go. They
  13. Ahhh i get it now! I was wondering what MH's angle was? It's that little green eyed monster over the big catches that were made earlier in the season. Unbelievable. TC
  14. You are just picking up on one line. As the post above says use the two lines. Easiest way is to pull all the pegs out and leave one endpin in the ground then pull the two lines together and put them on the other end pin as in the photos. TC
  15. Have a look at the last post in this thread. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/268708-how-to-wrap-a-longnet-up-help/?view=findpost&p=2909651&hl=%2Bpicking+%2Bup TC
  16. I used to get a packet of Embassy red for my mother in the coop they were 4+7p that would have been around 1963 packet of chips was thupence or 4pence with scrumps. The going rate for Going to the shop for a neigbour was a penny for the coop and thrupence for Davy DP's as it was further. But you never got paid of your mother. TC
  17. Similar weather to Cornwall here in my part of Wales Rake but there's less English folk! ..well a few less anyway, when the white population of the midlands aren't all down here together on holiday.. Bill I think his name is.. Says he who lives in little England beyond Wales TC
  18. I did think about it. The only problem with that is that glodeneyes do not nest in wales only the highlands of scotland. I have found mallard nests in trees many a time. TC
  19. Woz is in Shrops he does a fair bit. If you really want to have a go and are not sure where to start. Just ask, everyone here who does long netting is willing to help. I would recommend you have a read of longnetting from peg to peg by Martin King. It is a good book on long nets, it does not go into the tactical usage of the nets just the basics, how to set up different types of nets, how to set them in the field. A very good book that gives people a foundation into longnetting. But, just because you can set a net does not automaticaly mean that you will catch rabbits consistently. Once yo
  20. for me it was same buzz as dropping a ferret or terrier calling a fox or getting a good run at a hare Banter gets it TC
  21. Whats sport,.. got to do with it,..got to do with it,. . CW I remember that photo from Ohhh too many years ago now. That was Maddie by your side? TC
  22. Long netting at night is not to everyones taste, you either get it or you don't. But those who get it will tell you it can be so hard. Have a look back at the posts, people who thought it was just a matter of sticking a net out and walking the rabbits back into the net, have made when they cannot catch a rabbit with the nets. Long netting is very sporting indeed, in fact I would say it is more sporting than lamping a dog in the same fields. To qualify the above statement I give you an example of a field where all the rabbits run to wood on one side of the field. With a dog and lamp as long
  23. Perhaps because you have never taken the time to learn the considerable skills need to do either well? To be honest there is absolutly no skill needed to walk a field with a dog then slip it at the intended target. Personally I am not into trapping (apart from rats in the garden that is) But I can appreciate the work of a skilled trapper and what he needs to know to be consistanly catching. TC
