  1. Perhaps at a guess because wolves have similar hierarchy to ourselves, age related, whereas hyenas have an inherited hierarchy. The larger predator's such as big cats would be to dangerous.
  2. No but does that matter? Having an interest is enough for me, if i learn something that's reason enough. This research gives evidence to when dogs evolved and that they likely all came from one ancestor rather the evolving in different places as convergent evolution, which has been on school of thought.
  3. Be a strong pup? and looks like it may well get a broken coat.
  4. ?Indeed, they've been bred for thousands of years for the very purpose of catching hares so it would be strange if they couldn't ?
  5. kids got a few rosettes between the showers, daughter likes the horse displays mainly so will likely pop along to Exford in a couple of weeks as there's plenty of horsey stuff.
  6. You should get out there and get some running, there's plenty on facebook, club nacional del galgo espanol would be a start to contact people and see if you can get a run but remember my galgos smoke all the rescue lurchers in the park but in the field with fit dogs is a different world.??
  7. Indeed it would suggest the there was an extinct ancestor and that as man and dogs formed their bond the previous the greater diversity of wolves were out competed by this new" joint super" predator to the point of extinction.
  8. Same as Borzois in Russia didn't make uk until modern times, same continent same religion but distances where different when you had to walk or ride a horse to get there which is the vary reason we have distinct breeds like greyhounds, Borzois, Galgos etc in Europe and they have salukis, sloughis and Asawaki.
  9. Good way to keep the kids interested.
  10. So does a beagle and both take all day to catch a Hare....... ?
  11. Muslims from north Africa, ie Sloughi owners, the north Africans from places like Morocco, Algeria etc consider the Sloughi to be the true dog of the Arabs not the saluki. The mixing of cultures is why the Sloughi and Galgo share genetic material the two likely crossed and recrossed from the peninsular and Africa. The saluki was from a long way away before modern transport, bit like saying a Spanish breed is like a breed from Ukraine because they are both in Europe.
  12. It would appear that they both may have come from a common ancestor that is now extinct. Genome Sequencing Highlights the Dynamic Early History of Dogs JOURNALS.PLOS.ORG Author Summary The process of dog domestication is still poorly understood, largely because no studies thus far have leveraged deeply sequenced whole genomes...
  13. no see preceding post, two distinct breeds.
  14. They are each separate breeds, each has similarities to their nearest neighbours geographically as one would expect but each is distinct. The 1st two groupings from the Mediterranean and far east are known as ancient breeds in that there is no genetic link back to a preceding type, the greyhound and Magyar have genetic links back to a herding type and i'm not sure about the others but as they are not known as ancient breeds likely have a similar background breeds. This study reveals that some of the breeds are closer than others. - Sloughi and Azawakh - Sloughi and Galgo espanol ...
  15. Because no one here knew they existed, if we sent troops to Spain we'd perhaps have had them years ago?, everyone else has, they're used in the North and south of America, North Africa into the middle east and Russia.
  16. Dogs are like people, each has its own biological clock but keeping them going rather than leaving on the coach as they age will keep them healthier, the aim is to add healthy years rather than total years be that 10 or 20 for a dog or 60 to a 100 for us and hope that you stay healthy until the day you wake up dead in the morning.?
  17. Kids and the sea, can't beat it ?, reckon my girl is part mermaid and the lad not far behind.
  18. they follow that as well which is why you keep getting adverts for big girls thongs.........................
  19. Genetics have them most closely related to sloughis. They predate English greyhounds by a very long time.
  20. No difference, traditionally there were different types depending on the parts of the country and terrain but the centralised coursing has mostly evened them out, shame really. They have a federation. https://www.fedegalgos.com/
  21. Yes there's a few types coursing in Eastern Europe.
